We all can agree to have heard motorcycles with loud exhaust notes breaking the silence at night and creating nuisance in the neighbourhood. In fact, aftermarket exhausts became such a major issue that several state governments came down hard on motorists with loud aftermarket exhausts, especially Royal Enfield owners. But despite that, there's a huge industry of aftermarket exhausts in India and there's no discernible shortage of demand.
Aftermarket exhausts in India are illegal unless approved by the RTO. This means that only those aftermarket exhausts that are sold by automakers as an authorized accessory are legal in the country as they are in compliance with the rules mentioned in the Motor Vehicles Act. Royal Enfield, KTM, and several other brands sell their own range of high-performance exhausts and opting for these will not get you in trouble with the law.
Another major issue with aftermarket exhausts is that they are (almost always) louder than the permissible limit of 80 decibel, which makes them illegal. In fact, loud pollution was the major reason why police in Bengaluru, Delhi, and some other states initiated a drive to fine motorcycle users that had installed loud exhausts on their bikes. Needless to say, Royal Enfield bikes were at the centre of these drives, compelling the company to introduce a legal range of aftermarket exhausts.
