The R4D's that were shown at the beginning and end were from MAG25. They were an air transport unit that flew supplies into Vella Lavella and took wounded out. Dad was the Wing Mechanic for them.

How about the ducking going on which was probably the ammo cooking off. Also, the guy getting a shower with the extra large garden hose. That had to sting a bit.

This is the base where Pappy Boyington and the Black Sheep were stationed. (It's Vella Lacava in the TV show, but was Vella Lavella in reality). I checked the numbers on the corsairs, and none is his 883. But it's possible some are from VMF-214.

214 was stationed, like others, in several locations. They were at Torokina for a while. My father was a pilot with the 216 when 214 was there at Torokina and was the first squadron there prior to 214 arriving. Said several good pilots in that squadron and while Boyington may have been a good pilot, Dad had nothing good to say about him. I also spoke with other pilots from the 216 who also had nothing kind to say.

Boyington was kind of an A-hole who had a reputation for being a rebel, pissing people off, and causing trouble. He also drank too much and liked to fight. A unique character, for sure!
@josephstevens9888
@josephstevens9888 3 года назад
@@jefesalsero Pappy Boyington pissed off his fellow Black Sheep on several occasions. In post-war years, if a person was granted the privilege of becoming an honorary Black Sheep, it must have agreed upon by the majority of veterans of VMF-214. However, Pappy violated that rule several times and granted honorary Black Sheep membership upon someone without consent of the rest of the members.

There’s a lot of millennials overseas doing their bit, just like I did although I’m a Boomer. And there’s a lot of parrots just repeating what they read, totally uniformed without an original thought.

@@Chrisamos412 I think he means on average. WWII pretty much every American had their part in the war. We might be at war with 3 nations these days and the average millennial has no clue what’s going on. There are plenty of tough patriotic Americans in the service today but the average American in general was much tougher back then and they understood what our nation was about and how special our country was. We’re heading in the wrong direct again.

It seriously lacks some narrative - e.g: Let it burn for awhile Joe or you'll have to drag that charred corpse out... OK, now hose it down just a bit... Watch out Billy, or you'll wash his head away! ... See everybody? not much left... haba - what's that crowd?! I'll give you work if you have none... Oh! Bloody hell, now the rounds go off again! We've fried them for too long - hide away boys and watch the fireworks! ... Now, take these dog tags out... The other one's still burning - keep your distance! Some more hosing ... and OK! Spectacle's finished boys! Move your asses! Day as usual! Do your job!

????? Black and white cameras didn't exist in '43??? Jesus dude, they even made movies/documentaries about the dudes that filmed all this kind of stuff in the war......in the heart of heavy fighting. There's footage from far earlier than that too man. WAY earlier. The counter is from a "remastering" of the film later on. Hell, as an example, here's a link to film from 1890-1920. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O_me3NrPMh8.html
