Aftermath of an Engine Fire - 1971 VW Bus

Recently I bought this 1971 Volkswagen Bus, that unfortunately has suffered a devastating engine fire. In this walk around I show you the kind of damage that can happen to these classics. The future of this particular VW Bus is still undetermined, as I originally bought it with ideas of rebuilding it. However I need a steering box for our 1968 Bus, and I found someone else who needs a roof section to save his '71 that got crushed by a tree during a storm. So it may live on by saving some other buses.

Interesting. Someone else told me they would leave the fire damage also and just drive it. I don’t know if that is my flavor but there’s something for everyone out there.

Thanks Moe! Unfortunately I have a whole pile of “casual projects” haha!! Maybe I wasn’t super clear in the video, but we bought this bus like this. It happened here locally but it wasn’t us! Thanks for coming by.

I had a '71 like that, bought it cooked for $650.00, engine got so hot the 2 case halves we warped and unusable for rebuild. That one is salvage I'd say as you have a major nose punch to fix, too.

Aircooled Works in the UK do a good fire suppression system too. A guy in our local club had his 68 bay burn to the ground a couple of weeks ago.

It’s definitely salvageable but it all depends on how much you want to put into it. Regardless, fixing that one or fixing multiple others, it’s a win win. Do what makes the most sense to you guys. Good awareness video man.

Thanks Gary. You are right, I’ve seen worse salvaged, but I’ve seen better parted out. So it’s on the fence for me at the moment. I’m sure I’ll decide soon. It feels ok to do since it is saving another bus that was nice and got crushed by a tree, and I’m sure we will make the parts go as far as we can on other busses if we do go the part out route.

Good video I’ve had two VWs catch fire, a Thing and a ‘72 bug. The Thing I was working on, couldn’t get it to run right and I was pouring some gasoline out of a wine bottle into the carburetor when it backfired things got exciting quick I know I was stupid, thank god I didn’t drop the bottle. I put the fire out with my shirt. Not sure what started the bugs fire , was pulling it into the barn at night and luckily I saw a glow under the hood lid. Again put it out with my shirt Had about 6,000 bales of Straw and 25 horses in the barn Little different, I was pulling an engine out of a bus I was under it and pulled the fabric gas line , we usually plugged it with a screwdriver I had some trouble pluging it, when I moved the line the gas stream hit a trouble light. Cold gas hit the hot light bulb WHOOSH! I’m laying in a pool of burning gasoline and gas tank is pouring more into. Thank god the Cambodian man I worked for dragged me out. He called 911 but forgot how to speak English! 😃...I got on and talked to them We couldn’t push it out because of a beetle behind it had its wheel off We also painted cars and had some 5 gal cans of paint thinner Shop ended up burning to the ground. I saw an VW engine that was burnt about as bad as yours, we stripped it down and the long block still good. Before automatically pitching it might want to check it out

Mice! They build nests in the fan housing and the engine overheats and starts the nest on fire 🔥 pretty common

Yes it’s a good year for drive-ability. Last year of the upright engine, first year of the disk brakes.

Too bad it burned. I bet is was a classy VW van when it was new. I doubt it could be salvaged.

Engine fires are a result of neglect of maintenance usually.

No problem to salvage that. Drop engine and have the body dry-ice blast cleaned where the fire was, you will be surprised. Bodywork is easy fix, i did up a Karmann Ghia which looked just the same after a fire... Check this video out, the guy saved an even more torched one :-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qOH5ZrmTkHQ.html

HAH!... Most VW's die by fire... ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher or 5 in one if these... Routing the fuel lines over top of the coil, distributor and other electrical as well as the hot engine is a recipe for disaster.... Multiple fuel line connections, no less... I buy, restore, paint and resale these buses all the time. I NEVER leave the battery connected, nor park it near my house.... They're fine to flip, Id never put my family in one.
