I wonder if the "strange smell" was AGE? Seriously, I've been in Ancient(as compared to "Old") structures-castles and churches and they all had the same under smell which I think is Age. I have also noticed the a similar but different smell in old buildings across the US and I attribute that to age as well but nothing in the States is as old as the buildings in Europe and Asia and both cases I firmly believe this is a product of Antiquity.
