Looks like I'll be ordering this for Xmas, really loved the explanation, made me wish I had studied for audio engineering but it completely made sense, just as in old-times when the choirs used the resonance of the chambers for their chants

2023 is the year earphones got down to science. AFUL says this is their in-house design BA. The company is a high value R&D asset. I wish them the best.

Looking forward to listening to this one and adding this niche variant to my collection, as my first Aful product. Thanks also for the insightful tech explanation and I am glad that Aful did it right. At first glance I was reminded of the Prelude single (generic) BA flop that Crin discussed on his channel. I wonder if Aful took that "thrown together" product and said, "we will do this properly with actual R&D"...and I am glad they did. Father Crin can smile again that there is hope in a single BA config IEM... 😁

Spectacular release from Aful. Properly designed, transmission lines offer the best subjective bass response of any type of enclosure. Tight, fast and deep. A TL has effectively NO RESONANCE. After this release I am convinced that Aful is the new brand reference

"One of the best mids", that is saying a lot about this IEM. Aful has been doing a lot of research into their IEM. They dont just slap in drivers and tune them but they also combine it with innovations.

Great review Tony. I have been collecting chi fi iems from the days of soundmagic & one more iems . We are truly living in a golden age. The difference between the $100/200 from then to now is remarkable. The science in the driver tech now is insane. Simgot , Aful , Bqeyz ,Oriveti etc are using single driver technology that up to a few years ago would have been in the kilobuck range. Keep reviewing these gems bro. For all of us that are trapped in the rabbit hole!

My only experiment into low count BAs was the dt200, only 2 BAs and a very nice timbre. Excellent with the right tip, but to be fair I don't pick it up all that often. This one is very exciting though... it will certainly fill in an empty space in my collection. Thanks for another excellent review, btw, you are by far my favourite reviewer (and I follow all of them).

I'll probably get this before the EA1000 and try modding my 500 instead for a while lol. About a year ago I got the Orchestra Lite, wanting to dip into the all-BA sound, and it has become one of my favorite IEMs. But I've always been attracted to the unique presentation that comes from a single driver, I find you can "tune-in" to the driver technicalities easier, there is a more unified texture to things and coherency in the delivery. I have some nice DDs and a couple of Planars but I was always waiting for that more polished 1BA with greater bass abilities, and I think this is the one. Also I can't afford a Meteor haha.

Hi fi speaker makers like PMC and ATC and many other in different degree have been implementing transmission lines in their speakers where the common bass signatures are tight, powerful and extensive. The positive side effects include balanced sound, nice treble (though I find ATC harsher, then again they like big diameter tweeters) since the fast bass doesn’t bleed into higher regions. Your description of the Magic One sounds just like this. So yeah this is definitely no gimmick and good to see iems start to seriously implement such technic thanks to better 3D printing.

Hi Akros, a great video on an iem that stands alone in its class! Did great on 11.11 and got both the ea1000 and a planar, the hidizs mp 145 and saved about $75!

Tony - it's probably worth trying the Campfire Audio 1BA Satsuma. Readily available as "B" stock direct from Portland USA for much the same price as the MagicOne (do need to take into account it's even harder to drive). I also have multiple sets of the AS DT100, all consistent, and overall I still prefer the DT100 to the new MagicOne that I've been A/B testing against the Satsuma and DT100 for several days. And the AS came out well over 2 years ago. Cheers 🥂 and really appreciated your detailed review - 99% agree based on 5 days with it.

Etymotic ER4XR is amazing single ba, I understand the deepfit issue for many but using it everyday after a week or two the ears become used to being deeply violated lol, then they're great, good sound and isolation

One BA design is something really interesting to look for, but I don't know if it is worth considering it may be pretty similar to a planar IEM. Is there a significant difference between this and a planar? I can only guess they are both fast and lightweight, with nothing special that doesn't have the other.

I kinda want to see them make a 2BA IEM with the Sonion 38 series for bass and whatever brand gives them the best quality mids and treble extension to pair with it. They've shown that they can give what they want to people who don't mind less bass gain. Now I want to see them make a sub-$200 USD 2BA IEM for the bassheads. Ideally with a gain switch on the side. In fact, they may be able to use the Sonion 38 series in a purely vented design and entirely reuse their existing Magic One in a 1.5-way design with the Sonion 38 series being turned on or off with the switch to overlay the bass portion of the full-range BA and boost the overall bass volume to EDM club rave levels. A couple tuning options for bass gain or bass shelf shaping with the switches would be nice, but just having the ability to run it as a Magic One or as a Magic Two would be adequate. If Penon can make bank with the Turbo's ridiculousness, I don't see why AFUL couldn't with something less than half the price.

I'm curious though, you said that this type of design looks for 1/4 of the wavelength, but surely even an extremely long tube couldn't be 1/4 of a bass wavelength? A quarter of 500Hz is still 1.7cm

Akros, your tech explanation is off in a few places. That convoluted tube is not based on horn acoustics but quarter wave transmission. Also, speaker designers are very much aware of driver and/or enclosure resonances, but these are things that they want to avoid. What the designers actually aimed for in the above is to avoid the resonant frequency but still achieve the intended/aimed-for (low) bass frequency.

Maybe the smoothness of the curve is the magic tex. As a noob to iem the nasty peaks and dips in especially the mid treble of iem graph doesn't seem good to me. The waterfalls must be worse. Out of band is as important as in band or it is for speakers. Maybe the magic ones waterfall looks better than a multi.

Woah transmission line/QWTL in an iem. Wtf! 😂👏 Now i see the price. Without that it would have cost 50. The same tech but with dd would be game changer. Because at the end of the day transmission lines or pipe loading are all for only bass mostly. So a dd would be perfect partner for such design. Still think it should have been max 80 not 150 though. See the prob is it's not about if there is any single ba that comes close its about how many other 150 dollar iems that easily come close or most of the time beat this.

Uh oh, I just ordered the magic one, and had the original chu and found it one of the single most unpleasant sounding things I had ever listened to. Sickeningly claustrophobic sound. Hopefully the magic one has more soundstage and space, because the original chu physically made me feel sick.

Mmmmhhh so this is not a hype, it's a truly unique piece... for the price I don't know if I'll go for this or for a multi drivers IEM option like the EM6L or even paying more to grab a Hype2, a Quintet or the new Kinera Freya 2... what do you think?

Well this is worth it because it's something different. As for the other IEMs, EM6l is amazing for the price, Chopin is better than Quintet sound wise and Hype is also special......I would choose Chopin!

I love the mids of Etymotic ER2xr. and have no issues with the comfort with the foam tips. The music sounds pretty pure. If MagicOne's mids is as good, then my interest is piqued. Only thing I would say, as a user, I will nod in respect at your line "Is there any other single BA that is as good?" - but won't make any decision based on that. Whatever the ingredients, I am interested in the taste. For this price, how is this - and such. As much as i appreciate that single BA is doing a magical job, my end decision of the product can't be based on that. How does it sound and the price will decide. As an aside, Aful seems to be doing great job. Love my Aful P8s. Their new flagship is now coming: Aful Cantor (14 BA's). I guess that will be their most priced IEM.
