With the Hideout at 'critical mass', the Outlaw Bookseller is fearlessly still purchasing and he has another trip to Zardoz soon.....courageously, he forges on with a foolish disregard for the wallet (hang on, he's ebaying like mad too, so it's OK!). My friend once said about Elison ' you either love him, hate him or avoid him ' . Me went first . Although i almost got to second , when he paned Star Trek the motion picture . Elison could be very "savage " . Refering to one of the characters Elison pen/ paned something like this ... its good , she was changed into a robot.. so she could now act with peak effiency .Elison wrote one of the best ST episodes. Any how great haul . I recently added Spinrads 'Greenhouse Summer ' , 'Russian Spring ' and 'The Star -Spangled Future ' to my collection . Thanks for the show and speak.🖖

Hey Sylvan - I always loved him unreservedly, but then he caught me early with his finest stuff. I can understand why people disliked him - my friend Christopher Priest was at pains to point out the issues around 'The Last Dangerous Visions' and was right to do so. I love a bit of Norman -'Russian Spring' is a great one, bought it new and read it then. 'Greenhouse Summer' I don't have and I'll admit to neglecting the great man for many years. I am currently trying to acquire more of the later works but they are hard to come by in good condition. Met him once, great guy!

Remember reading that version moving Mars a long time ago from the Edinburgh Central lending library. Similar time to silverbergs face of the waters.

Thanks for another informative video, Steve. I got all excited this time because I thought I had a 1st edition of Strength of Stones for you, but alas it's not among my HB Bears. Interestingly, Strength of Stones escaped the cull which took out many a fine book. You're continuing to pique my interest in Harlon Ellison. I listened recently to an interview he did with Bob Silverberg and it was a riot, you don't think of uncle Bob laughing and it was good to hear.

City Lights here in SF had a special launch event for that McIntyre book back in February. Had speakers doing talks on zoom. Moorcock spent a lot of the time talking about the Beatles. I could barely sit through the authors, but I was able to get a copy from them. I think you would've done the book a service.

I'm still working my way through it and it's fun- especially on the pulpier stuff (New Wave is pretty well covered, but needs some deconstruction and further explanation- which I'll aim to do in upcoming videos). It has some really nice pictorial spreads too, great to see many books I own and some obscurities I don't.

Yes, I was very happy with the Ellison- people generally ask silly money for it and I got it at a decent price. As I said, the trade paperback was vile!

A great haul! I've got all the fiction except the Hutchinson. I can't recommend Andy Richards at Cold Tonnage Books highly enough, I've been buying from him since bookselling was a sideline,and he was still delivering mail every morning. My most recent purchase from him, two weeks ago, was an upgrade for my copy of Ellison Wonderland in the expanded PS Publishing edition, I now have the slipcased edition with a second book of early Ellison crime stories.

I've not worked through them yet, but Ashley's "Tales of the Weird" for the British Library looks like a great series and it's been gaining ground here in the States. Sorry to hear about your ill fated anthology. Ashley might've filled your shoes after the fact with his "Steampunk Prime" collection.
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal Год назад
Mike Ashley is one of THE pre-eminent genre fiction experts of all time, I feel. I do rather feel that there have been too many of these anthologies (I'm thinking commercially here, like a bookseller) but having said that, they do allow a focus on themes to suit readers who have developed a specific interest in a topic, so they do have real value as books, I feel.

An interesting mix of authors with some good cover art. Europe in Autumn by Dave Hutchinson seems like a good read & pertinent as its publication predates the pandemic, but it will be a while before I get to Cold Water. Just watched the Peripheral, the 1st episode, on Amazon. I believe it is based on a Phillip K Dick story. Enjoyed it & the visuals & special effects are well done. I will get the Yesterday's & Tomorrows for nostalgia & inspiration. Thanks for the video.
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal Год назад
'The peripheral' is based on the eponymous novel by William Gibson- but it's nowhere near as good as the book! If you've not read Gibson before, it's not an ideal starting place, go with 'Neuromancer' first.

Personally I wouldn't invest too much faith in the British Library actually having everything it claims to. "In theory" they have, yes, as you say. The reality might be somewhat different. A dealer friend of mine told me once about another dealer he knew who was offered a large quantity of vintage Weird Tales. When he saw them they were all stamped "property of the BL". Turned out an intern at the BL was pilfering the collection to fund his 'recreational habits'. The dealer naturally did the decent thing and informed the BL. To his chagrin no one there appeared to be all that fussed. They hadn't even known the stuff was missing and didn't seem all that bothered about getting it back. The attitude he encountered was so indifferent that he resolved not to bother informing them if it ever happened again. Fully concur with your estimation of Mike Ashley. One of the great genre archivists and historians. As indeed was the late and much lamented Michel Parry. Was your Steampunk Rivals project a reference to Parry's great 70s anthology series for Corgi: Rivals of Dracula/Frankenstein/King Kong? Or were you thinking instead of Hugh Greene's Rivals of Sherlock Holmes series?
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal Год назад
I agree that the BL clearly doesn't have a copy of everything: when you know how many books are published each year (as I do from my trade experiences) you realise it can't be so. In theory the Bod has it all too... Both Parry and Lamb were in mind. Nick, my sometime co-author, has done a few things using the 'Rivals..' prefix in titles as of course titles cannot be copyrighted (personally, I think they should be, if only to encourage writers, editors and publishers to be creative and not lazy). Originally, he wanted the book to be entitled 'Rivals of H.G. Wells' but I pointed out that we shouldn't do this as I already had a book of that title in my library. I then suggested 'Steampunk Rivals', which seemed both commercial and indicative of what the book would be about. I'm still sad it never happened, it was a fun project...

@@outlawbookselleroriginal I think Cambridge is another legal deposit library, isn't it? Yes, it certainly sounds like an interesting project. A pity it never came to pass. You know, the more I think about it so the more the word 'rivals' implies competition. I'm not so sure that was always the case in a lot of these literary trends. Perhaps 'confederates' would be closer to the mark. Doesn't scan as well I grant you. And in any case the word is probably verboten now anyway in the barmy over-sensitive cultural climate we live in. I love Severn House books too. A great and under appreciated publishing house. Just like Robert Hale. And for the same reason.

I know: it's a great shame- I very recently read his 'Virtual Zen', which I really enjoyed and it's on my 'to film' pile for part 2 of my 1990s TBR, which will now become a partial tribute to him. I re-read "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" a few weeks ago too (aka 'They Live') and 'Blake's Progress' is on my bedside table now. He was underrated, I feel.

I've got to get that Spinrad book,a writer I admire a lot. The Yesterdays tomorrows looks like its worth getting. How did you manage to get those Ellisons? finding his books at a decent price is hard work.I do have the Hornbook though in Edgeworks#3 Great Haul Stephen,thanks for sharing
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal Год назад
You have by now acquired the Spinrad. You can still just about get some Ellisons- but not many- at reasonable prices. Being a long-term collector and booktrade insider, I'm exceptionally adept at searching for out of print material, using a network of dealers I've favoured for years and anyone who can really make the grade on price and condition. Also, some of those dealers sometimes give me a discount for loyalty, which is gracious of them.
