She clearly can sing this song... but I can see why they moved away from songs in this style and pitch. It's just not Laura's real range, it's too much of a strain to her, hence she rarely sings it in true pitch as of late. But! This is a great demonstration of what she can do.
+Kamikaze Gorilla And yet somehow you're wrong. Aristotle said, "We are what we repeatedly do." Therefore, Tom Gabel is now a woman. Therefore, you are most likely an ignorant jerk.
Laura E she's lost her voice a couple of times this year because she screams too hard haha. saw them live and she just goes all out. i love them so much!!!
If she wants to dance and drink all night well there's no one that can stop her she's going til the house lights come up or her stomach spills on to the floor This night is gonna end when we're damn well ready, for it to be over worked all week long now the music is playing on our time yeah we do, what we do, to get by. and then we need a release.
I don't know why you have a thumbs down for saying A#...you're right.. Although it's nice to mention that they play the F and Bb on the closest frets to the nut, and play the E and A notes from the open strings. (E on F chord and A on Bb chord)
Well its more of a theoretical thing. In the Key of F (the key they're playing this song in), there is an A natural and a B flat. We cant have an A and an A# in the same key, so its a Bb. The notes have two names so we can pick the best one to fit the situation. In this situation, its a Bb.
...quickly saying, I am a person having interest in various thing and a desire to understand whats surrounding me...unfortunately, I dont have any knowledge in music, but I still have a good time taking a read at your comments everybody, because they sound constructive and far away from the usual stupid comments we too often see inhere on youtube. that being said, What a Good Song ! Long live AgainstMe!
I would have made the same mistake.. I'm self taught so I don't know any theory..but I try to help people figure out chords sometimes too.. I wonder if I've been confusing people
Actually, hormones have zero effect on voice. The general rule with MtF hormones is that they can add and soften some things, but not take away anything. Testosterone makes a TON of changes to your body, and very few of the noticeable changes can be undone by hormones alone. The voice is among the things that aren't affected at all. Any changes she makes to her voice will be through serious vocal therapy and training.
Actually after hearing a couple times its fine as it is as you said, let the cover musicians change it up for different interpretations. thanks for reply!
@aristopunk1 You're totaly right, I was thinking the exact same thing. Most bands sounds gr8 in the studio but they suck live! This sounds like old music where there was no studio mixing and all that shit...this is real...
Don't know about the whole band, but I saw Tom Gabel on an acoustic tour recently (blanking on what it was called but Dan Adriano and Chuck Regan were also there) and he (still a guy at that point, not aware of his current state) sounded awesome.
LOL doesn't even sound like an acoustic session... these guys are awesome... would be nice if they did a version with strumming and all the acoustic rendition stuff, you know...
You're correct, simply wanting to be a girl doesn't make you one. Going through all the surgical procedures, and hormone changes does though. Therefore, she is without a doubt Laura.
But it does. You're just denying something you don't like. Ignorance is bliss, hmm? I'm off to deny that the sun sets because I don't want it to be tomorrow yet.
Its just the same song without distortion, you gotta do something different when you do it acoustic, add a mandolin, sing it softer, add some Dylan to it for chrisake! I still love you guys! (I know you started out acoustic playing at laundromats)
@Pitstick your are kidding right? you should really consider what you are focusing on when people are putting it out raw for your entertainment. additionally, when you find you are critiquing something and you are the only one out of many with the negative take its a great opportunity to take a second look at your opine. just sayin.
your gettin mixed up with the wrong guys your gettin messed up with the wrong drugs sometimes your body takes you places that you didn't really plan on going when people see the track marks on her arms she knows what their thinking she keeps on working for the minimum as if her highschool education gave you any other options you know.
All of that would have ruined the song. You don't have to do anything different acoustic. Laura isn't supposed to sing anything soft that's what makes them Against Me! and mandolin wouldn't fit at all. Different strokes I guess though.
To be fair to the guy getting bashed on for referring to Tom as "him", this video is over 5 years old. This is Tom singing and Tom is a he. No need to go so insanely politically correct that you rewrite history and pretend like Tom Gabel never existed. Best of luck to Laura. I'm glad she's at peace. I am a bit bummed though that her voice has been changing from what I've heard in recent live performances and will never be as awesomely gravelly as it is in this video.
her voice actually hasn't changed. you can tell now that this isn't actually in her true range, she strained her voice singing like this. that's why they don't do songs in this pitch anymore. even when they play this song live, it's in a different pitch.
She will never have an "feminine" voice, but the hormone will have an effect on her voice. At most, it shouldn't progress further than fairly effeminate man's voice. I'm sure I'll miss the voice at least a little, but I'll hold off until I hear the new one to make any judgement.
But I read that once you've had testosterone it affects your voice and there's no point of return. Apparently it's a big deal for MTF transgenders because they have to practice making their voice less manly.
They don't know nothing about redemption they don't know nothing about recovery some people just aren't the type for marriage and family No mother ever dreams that her daughters gonna grow up to be a junkie. No mother ever dreams that her daughters gonna grow up to sleep alone.
