This is the emotional moment a teen with irreversible hearing loss that she shares with her mom has her cochlear implants activated for the very first time. Katelynn Bronson, from Provo, Utah, shares a hereditary hearing loss, passed down through her mom, Jennifer. Jennifer, 38, started losing her hearing in her 20s, and after Katelynn, now 14, was born her family were worried she would start losing her hearing, too. Having passed her hearing test at birth, Katelynn began to show signs of the same condition as her mom after her first birthday, and she received her hearing aids when she turned four. Katelynn learned to read lips, but in school it was clear her hearing was getting worse, Jennifer said, so her family started looking into cochlear implants.

That is nice - and i share your wishes. But usually that is not how it works. These devices are not glasses that you put on and forget for the rest of the day. Normal hearing aids try to amplify the frequencies in your spectrum that you do not hear good - but also Noises, Clicks etc. - and that stresses you. Even worse are cochlea implantates. They sound somehow synthetic as persons that wear only one of them state. These persons developed hearing experiance and compare the remaining ear to the implanted one. Enjoying listening to music, remembering how it sounded when your hearage was healthy? Forget it. It may sound horrible. Do not get me wrong: I do not mean one should not do it. I like to point out: That *will* take time. It *will* stress you up to a point where you are too tired to communicate at all. What you might expect from watching this video is: "we switch it on and everything is fine". We need to clarify that this is simply not the case.

This made a grown ass man cry. I can kind of relate to this not to do with hear but I lost my ability to smell due to a horrible motor bike accident about 20 years ago. I crashed head first into a stucko wall split my head open well the skin got peeled away. Broke both the eye sockets, cracked both nasal passages which damaged the nerves that help you smell. Those nerves never healed correctly. I miss the smell of rain when it first starts or burning fire wood, smelling flowers, pine wood... So don't take your five senses for granted people.

I once met an old man who ran a popcorn stand and was deaf. Every time I passed by that area, I would talk with him with what little sign language I had learned and the rest we would figure out nonverbally between us. I think it always made him happy that I tried to communicate and I would always stop by whenever I saw him. It made me sad to imagine how he was cut off from so much and maybe people avoided him to not have to deal with the confusion of it. He was so sweet. I am so glad this girl got her ears 😭❤️

Blindness separates people from things; deafness separates people from people. I'm sure you made that man's day. I wish sign language was taught more in schools not just as part of a class, but as an actual language that would fulfil the foreign language requirements.

@@pyronic120120 Though it would be great if more people knew sign language I think that most people wouldn't have use for it often enough that they'd retain the skill after they stopped studying it at school if that was a thing. So learning it in school might give you a few more people that know a bit of signing but it definitely wouldn't lead to any sort of widespread understanding of it.

my mother lost her hearing when she was around the same age. She went through most of her life with doctors not listening to her about the hearing aids being too loud and hurting her. She wrote them off and dealt with it, but several years ago she tried again and got a great doctor who worked with her and found a device and tone that could finally work for her. I will always thank that man for giving my mother back something she didn't know she missed. Thank you for doctors like this who care to ask and listen. 🎉😢🎉
