In Age of Wonders 4, with gameplay to show you the new changes, I'm exploring the Magic Victory condition which has been thrown out and revamped. The New magic victory condition - or the Wonders condition as I like to think of it - now focusing on capturing, controlling and "binding" golden ancient wonders to your empire instead of turtling up and building a heart, root and seed. The devs at Triumph Studios have also made some big changes to the research system, research spell, spell casting costs, and loads more that make the magic victory condition much more difficult than it used to be.

I say this nearly every video, but as a Triumph gamer veteran, keep expecting this as the updates and DLC roll out: massive changes to Meta based on player feedback and save data shared. This game is going to play very differently from the vanilla launch, and from what I'm seeing, even more so than previous titles. Triumph seems to be going all in on making this their best yet.

When the AI actually lays siege to one of my cities for the first time since launch... That's when I will know the AI has been worked on.

@@danielsgamerprofile4067 Not yet... but i'm only playing retail, I haven't played the beta. There is hope, but no proof of any significant change... if the AI never attacks a human controlled city ever, that's a major AI failure.

@@danielsgamerprofile4067 No, I agree with you... it's pretty tame. AoW3 AI was far more aggressive and had no problems attacking human cities. This AI mostly justs sits around and lets you do whatever you want... at it's "most aggressive", it might move into your undefended territory and pillage a few things, then when your army shows up, it either runs away or suicides itself against a clearly superior force. The mechanics of AoW4 are just amazing... I love how this game is setup... but the incredibly lame/tame AI that never attacks any of your cities is just ruining the fun of playing this game... it's more like playing against yourself, because the AI is so lame.

@@wolfshanze5980 totally agree the game is great the AI just needs some work the most ‘aggression’ I’ve seen is like passive aggression like claiming territories near you or pillaging and running away or if you leave a city empty while at war they’ll move on it then when you come back they stop their siege … if they can tweak this the game would improve so much and be an outstanding addition to the genre

I like this update, it was kind of strange that both magic victory and expansion victory had the same win method (just with different prerequisites).

It doesn't really matter where Gold Wonders are when it comes to defending them because one can just build a teleporter next to them.

Old Magic Victory wasn't the best, true - it was too easy to turtle out. But the new one isn't the best either. It's way too much dependent on the rng (as we could even see in this video - two gold wonders in a single city). And looks a bit too similar to Domination Victory but with a research twist.

I feel the same way, it's gone from one extreme to the other. Where it went from too easy, to now probably one of the less achievable win conditions. I don't think I've ever had 3 gold star wonders next to my borders yet.

Me too! The devs are extremly responsive and the update cycle seems well whought out. A really pleasant surprise nowadays to get a game made with love and passion.

Is the beacon graphic still in the game? It always looked very cool, having a beam of magic on the map

It's worth noting that the game will always spawn the minimum required number of Golden Wonders on both layers on the map, and the number you need depends on the size of the map. Smaller maps can't accommodate enough Wonders, so you'll only need 2.

I prefer playing on big maps so I've been using one of the mods that allows for bigger maps. Found out magic victory made big maps kinda useless, attaining magic victory before my borders ever started to get close to any of the AIs. So that's a change I welcome.

Glad to hear the AI is actually attempting to stop the victory condition and it's something I hope they continue to work on. As it is doing any victory condition is pretty much a gimme, the AI will never do anything to actually stop them. Could have everybody at war with the one doing the victory but nobody would send armies. Doing these should be a real commitment instead of just doing it to end the match easily

Seems to impossible to achieve magic victory. By the time you unlock a tome level 5, research binding spell, capture and secure 3 golden wonders, 200 rounds easy, but at round 150 game is over.

Definitely possible. I achieved magic victory at turn 120 and I wasn't even going for it. Binding spell is available at tome tier 3. But I researched it after my tier 5 tome . If I would focus on this victory I could probably do it at turn 80.

They need to re-work the AI so that they actually attack when you trigger an end game spell. Random enemy spawns every 3 turns is just poor.

The new magic "wonders" victory is now effectively a subcategory of the conquest victory, and thus has become a waste of time to pursue. I don't like the change.

Played both versions of the beta. Lots of great changes and improvements, but AI seemed just as passive and braindead as ever. Attacked me once in 2 games (on Hard). Never stepped foot in my territories even once in 2 different 15 turn countdowns.

I think this is a really good change! As they say, stops magic being a turtle victory. I can imagine an evil wizard scouring the land for wonders to seize...much more thematic than him just sitting, cackling in his tower. My only concern is the numbers needed. My current game says I need 4 wonders, which seems harsh!

Incredibly bad rework... tbh i don't know how they could have made a worse one. I don't mind the focus on wonders but the ai doesn't need to raid or occupy them to stop you. He just has to walk on the damn province. On the hardest difficulty i don't spend my end game time enjoying fighting hard battles but rather trying to construct a wall of armies to stop the ai troops, who some just ignore my defenses and try to make a run for it... it's like i am buliding Trump"s wall over here. Not at all my idea of fun. They should have at least given us 2 turns to clear them... hell even 1 turn.

Yes, it is undefendable. Ewen if you kill all the big armies around there is always some vassal armi which march from underground and stop it then you must cast it again and you don't have time for this max one time. They shut occupy wander for at least one turn so you have some chance to react and have a chance to defend wander.
