I believe the the story takes place within a year, Jack is 4 years old and doesn't age until the Epilogue when he says he's 12. So the main story is about a year, then a 8 year time skip in the Epilogue. There's no indication that the main story took place within a few years, it's 1899 through out the entire campaign

Yeah. Literally plot points out there that Dutch raised Arthur starting at 13.. an 18 year old raising a 13 year old doesn't seem anything like they described in game. I'm calling it bs. Even if it is canon, I use my headcanon. Same for heights, I refuse to believe Arthur is anything under 6'

I'd say Grimshaw looks like she's in her mid-50s even, but similar to Swanson, she's lived a tough life which probably makes her look a lot rougher.
John is 38 in RDR 1, so knowing that RDR 2 takes place 12 years before, we can confirm that he was 26 during the main game (34 in the epilogue). Same logic applies to Abigail and Jack, who were 34 and 16 in RDR 1, respectively. Abigail was 22 in RDR 2 (30 in the epilogue) and Jack was 4 (12 in the epilogue).
It’s even sadder if you find the letter from his dad in the camp just outside of Rhodes, it says a bunch of stuff about how his dads dream was for Lenny to become a lawyer and live an honest life, he goes on about how he feels sorry about how he must seem more like a tutor than a father but he did it so he can live a better life than his dad and the generations before him (Lennys family were slaves), but that obviously never happened as he joined the gang and rather than living his dads dream of him being a lawyer and helping others, living an honest, wealthy life, he became and outlaw and died at 19...

the life expectancy in the year 1900 was 46 years old. i think some movies and games intentionally use older actors or make them look older than they are to show maturaty as well as the showing they have been through alot and that age has nothing to do with who you are

yup exactly what ronky said, jack in fact states in the epilogue that he's 12. though i also want to say my nephew looked like that when he was 4, some kids just look older (either because they grow faster or whatever. ...my nephew is really tall, lol.) so...happens. haha
EDIT: As I started to replay RDR2 yesterday i come to one thing, at the beggining of the game arthur says that he rides for about 20 years with the gang, and that he joined them while hew was about 13, so he must be no older than 34 or 35

Why everyone thinks they are older what they really are? Don't you understand back then living conditions were tough and people looked older (bad food, smoking, alcohol, sicknesses and so on)
all those people look so much older compared to their ages. i think in those times, there was clean food, less pollution, clean water. no machines. that's why people good shape of body even at early age.

Going by old pictures, I think it's just that everyone in the late 1800s looked a decade older than they were. Probably from all the exposure to the Lumbago.
Life in general was harder back then. People has less access to nutrition and vitamins; they were subject to hard labor due to the technological limitations sometimes lack thereof, medicine and vaccinations were also less developed which meant diseases that are rate today are much morch common then. All this combined wears a person down real quick especially if they are not careful.

In Arthur’s tent at camp you can find a newspaper scrap of the gang’s first bank robbery. It occurred in 1887. Lenny was born in 1880. Lenny was SEVEN YEARS OLD while Arthur was robbing banks. That’s kinda crazy.
Dutch taught Arthur how to read don’t forget about that. Doesn’t matter if it’s only five years difference a 16 year old would most certainly look up to a wise 21 year old.

That was the norm back then. Get the women young while they're still fertile and make as many babies as you can. That's what I've been finding out by doing the family tree. Farther back I go, the more babies they were popping out.

Sure, process food and fast food was uncommon to entirely non existent, but advances in healthcare over the last century has extended people’s lives. A diseases like tuberculosis is easy to treat now and no one dies from it, but I guess you can argue that people overall ate healthier and were much more active which is true, just didn’t live as long due to lack of technology and access to healthcare. Also, things like lead were unregulated and was everywhere.
I still can't forget that one time when Arthur nearly gets stabbed in the chest and Dutch does nothing and leaves him behind or when Abigail was kidnapped by the Pinkertons and Micah said they should leave her behind because she is just a girl and Dutch agreed. Dutch really lost his mind after the Saint-Denis bank robbery. Losing Hosea was when he lost his mind but without him, Micah started playing with his mind
