How to train an aggressive dog? This dog is actually very friendly to his people but when he gets frustrated, watch out! Leo has a short fuse and if you set him off it could get ugly.

100% agree. Too many people get embarrassed about their dog not behaving well and so they try to pretend that the dog isn't doing anything wrong to the point where something bad happens. To be so capable of a dog owner and yet not let your ego get in the way, so you can openly say; "My dog is not reacting the way I want and I need help." is very impressive. He clearly is an excellent dog owner who cares about doing what's best for his animal. There need to be more people like him as pet owners.

It’s so wild to see how well trained Leo is and yet how out of control he can get. Such a great example of how unique every dog is
@TheJustinJ
@TheJustinJ 9 месяцев назад
He was TRAINED to go out of control. When the dog attacks, its because that was what was drilled into him at an early age. Clearly that trainer was a terrible, undisciplined trainer who obviously did not convey to the dog exactly WHEN or WHO to attack. I've seen dozens of trainers training their dogs to attack WITHOUT COMMAND and even against an aggressor turned "non-threatening" while the body suit dude was retreating. They literally instilled in their dog to KILL anyone with a cane, who is acting afraid and backing away, and turning to run! WITHOUT A COMMAND TO DO SO! WTF! This in conjunction with selective breeding to develop a dog that is prone to instantaneous violence in order to have a dog that can be trained to attack, and kill.

I am glad to see the owners so willing to work with him, however I'm shocked that they were really thinking this working dog could ever be happy as a house pet. This dog means serious business. It's so clear that he is immensely frustrated and has never had a healthy way to release that. Also how you explained the dog daycare emergency and the Airedale trying to break it up lmao 💕💕 Edit: this dog should be in the Ukraine military rn. He's a boss.

I've had shepherds my whole life and I have to say, its a full time job. If you don't own them for herding or farm jobs, and they are your housepets, you have to "make up" a job for them. For my dog max, it was herding her 20 + frisbees in the yard, collecting them in a huge stack, dropping them at my feet, and I would throw them all again. This went on for hours. Every aspect of the day was an event. In the evening she would play soccer indoors with her toys and we would work on hiding treats around the house and having her find them by smell. Its so rewarding though. They can be very happy and good dogs given the right time, attention, and environment. But environment isn't everything if you are willing to dedicate the time and attention.

What impressed me about this video, is that the trainer, realised where the redirected aggression was coming from ( Frustration) and that the corrections with the e collar and the prong we making things worse, so he reached out to someone more knowledgeable with these particular dogs and then went to scatter feed. Also, he was honest to the owners and told them there is "no fix", just management in those high anxious moments..gave them the tools to deal with this in a more humane way. I like that he realised his usual methods were not suitable for this particular dog and was willing to change it up completely. Well done! As he said, always a student, always something to learn..the trainer that stops learning or feels there is nothing left for them to learn, that is the time they should hang up their leash!

My grandson lives with me. His other grandma lives out of state. She will come for visits throughout the year. Since her last visit, we got a new dog. He is now 9 months old. He is fantastic. He barked to tell me someone pulled in the drive. Then calmed down. They came in, and he went about his business. He was fine with them being there, but he did not want them to pet him. He went off with the boys, they had one of my grandsons cousins with them. She had the nerve to tell me, to bring him to her so she could pet him. I was like, I’m not forcing him. He has to let you be here, but does not have to let you pet him. He is playing with the boys. And I am thrilled with his behavior. She got mad. Too bad.

Love Dutchies. They were one of my favorite breeds to work. There's really ONLY a one thing I can share about this video... Dutchies, much like Belgian Malinois, need something to do, something to keep their attention or keep them active. They are high drive dogs. A good comparison would be asking a kid with ADHD to sit still on their hands and not talk all day everyday. Unless that person is comatose, it ain't gonna happen. The best way I can describe a dog's psyche to my clients is they're much like a human child's until they reach the "senior" stage in the life cycle. Certain breeds require more attention and training than others.

The owner is clearly an excellent trainer, but when he came up on problems he couldn't solve, he consulted Tom Davis. And even though he was making great strides with this dog, Tom then consulted his friend, trainer Forrest Micke. Where a novice can be defensive about their skills (or lack of) a great trainer cares most about helping the dog.

I agree with the not petting rule. However, I don't think someone asking if they can pet your dog is an issue (as long as they respect you saying no.) I think that everyone should be watching your videos (dog owners or not,) lots of great lessons to be learned, you have a ton wisdom!

I really like the way you explained dominance. My dog is not intact. He will fight you when he doesn't want to do what you tell him to do. He will bite (not break the skin) and jump. I got him to stop doing that during walks or training. But if he is excited that is a different story. He will bite the leash, me, furniture or anything else around until you let him go do whatever he wants to do. He ignores my commanding tone and would get angrier if I smacked him. Anyway, that's why I adopted him, so I try to avoid situations where he is extremely excited and forced to sit in one spot. Fortunately, he is my best buddy, loves other dogs and people, and doesn't need to be on a farm like this dog.

Impressed with this in many ways. If I can add something it would be to bond first. I would love to take Leo out in the bush for a long trail run where we can be completely alone and get our built up energy out, work the frustration out of our body’s, clear our head in nature, sniff together, sense together, explore together. Hunt together! Bond and become one in the elements. Leo would never direct onto his people like that if he loves them, lives for them and is at the ready for them. These dogs need an astronomical amount of exercise or else they can be a anxious mess. There natural and raw instincts make them less able to be domesticated as a “pet” but rather equality, pack relationship filled with love. You always remain a calm, fair, confident, on the ball and loving. Know your baby’s inside and out and predictthem before they do.

Leo is one of those dogs that MUST BE FIXED! Then about 4-6 weeks he should mellow out. Right now his reactivity is causing his adrenaline to rise and that intensified his aggression. It looks as though he loops around and around causing more adrenaline and so on.

I am so glad I found these videos! Thanks Tom! I'm not sure scatter feeding will work for my GSD but its worth a try. I have tried offering food when she is being beligerant and she just got worse.... She definitely does not like being told what to do (sometimes) and will fight me. Also, she cant pick food off the ground with her current basket muzzle that we always use in public because she goes off then redirects at me! I certainly identify with a lot of comments in this video. Like, why do people get freaked out about my dog when she's wearing a muzzle? She would be a lot more dangerous without it! And just because I am a women doesn't mean I cant handle my dog! I am actually very fit and strong. In addition to the muzzle I wear a heavy leather belt around my waist to which the leash is attached in case it slips out of my hands or she goes off while I'm tying up a poop bag. I'm doing everything I can to keep everyone safe.

My Czech-bred GSD is just like this, a constant work in progress. We get dirty looks and comments when we walk with a prong collar and muzzle. I can walk him with a loose leash through a crowd of people now without a muzzle but Reuben is still incredibly reactive to other dogs and will redirect on me if we get too close. He used to redirect with cars, bikes, all people, kids playing with a ball was a huge trigger. Thank you for this video, I'm heading out to try scatter feeding right now.

That's why you don't get working line dogs if you're not actually going to be doing work with them, and are an experienced dog trainer. That's just selfishness and hubris, just like as ended up with the people in this video.

Thank you for that sentence. Stop asking people to pet their dog. Well, at least you can say "no" for your dog in such a case. I had - and still have - the problem that random people just do touch my dog (8 month old aussie girl). She is very afraid of men. If I'm walking her and men are passing by, that's no problem. But as soon as they start to interact with her, looking at her and stuff... she get's really scared and aggitated. I met so many people that just touch her without asking. And then I'll get pissed, because I'm seeing my dog in an unfomfortable position. Even though she's turning her head away like "Hey, leave me", they follow with their hands and touch her. When she was a puppy and I carried her on my arms, there was a man just stepping in front of me and touching her. He hurt my personal space as well. Without asking me. I was so angry and speechless at the same time. So thank you again for that sentence. It's so important. There are types of dogs that don't really care (my old girl that died last year with 17 years was such a case). But insecure or sensible dogs can really take damage from such unwanted and incorrect actions of other people... and then it's the owner that has to fix it again and the dog's the one that suffers. I think it's time that people start understanding that a dog is not just a "thing you can pet", it's a living, breathing animal with feelings, a whole personality and if you're at least asking something, BELIEVE and accept the owners statements. Because that's another thing people start nibbing at. Like you just don't know your dog. Like they know better. Damn. This comment wasn't supposed to be so long... but anyway. Thanks for your great work! Greetings from Germany. :)

@spykethespider5070

Muzzles are great tools when it comes reactive dogs but sometimes you have desensitize dogs to them. Also make sure it fits right. Any dog can be pushed past its limitations of patience and reactives dogs have way less limitations than non reactive. The muzzle is there so that if there is a snap there isnt a full on bite which can make things go south really bad depending on breed. Obviously a pug isnt going to really do much but a dutch shepard will.

I just discovered you and I feel like I may have a spark of hope. As I sit here at 4am in the morning freshly bitten by my son's aggressive dog. I have helped cared for him along with my 24 year old son whom he lives with. Until the past three months, bc he has come to live with me due to my son being out of town for work. You have the most knowledge and best videos that I have came across, and I've searched alot! He's bitten three trainers and honestly I was at the point that I had accepted that he will only be able to be around the two of us. Now that I have found you I pray you are at least willing to have a conversation with me to help me make some decisions bc I'm not in upstate, I live in Wilmington NC. Please if you have a moment I am willing to pay for just a conversation. I love this dog dearly 💞 and will not put him down or give up but I need change. Thank you in advance for your time! The dog is an American bully and three and half years old

I’m watching your videos because I have a rescue German shepherd who is fear aggressive. He seems to be protective over me and tries to bite my husband. I haven’t seen a video yet with a dog as determined to bite as Oakley. I see the dogs in your videos calming down and Oakley doesn’t calm down. I can’t afford a professional trainer so I’m working with him myself. I’m running out of hope for him and afraid he will have to be put down if he can’t overcome his aggression.

That jumping up behavior does not look like dominance. My dog does the same thing when he's feeling very insecure. This dog is showing all the same signs, especially the whining. Also, that behavior has probably worked for him in the past so you're probably right about that part. I agree that it probably is frustration as well.

I've grown up with dogs nearly my whole life. about a year ago I was walking in my neighborhood there was this guy ( horrible owner of a Belgian Milionis ). The dog actually looked scared and timid with its tail tucked. well as I passed the dog went at me but didn't get me. The owner said it's a trained guard dog (doubt it) and I walked to close to him and that was why he did that. Been around Belgians in the Army and they didn't act like that. I noticed the two out walking a few more time and the dog responded the same way to everyone or dog they passed. I haven't seen then since and hate to think what happened to the Dog because of its owner. any suggestions besides 311?

Hi Tom! I live in Standish Maine. from what you’ve described with this dog here, That is my dog! My 90 pound American bully Moose 🫎 is confidently insecure. I’ve been watching so many of your videos. I’m so excited to learn that you are in New York now, and I really really hope to get there one day! I rescued my dog two years ago I went through different trainers, all positive only and it’s been absolutely ridiculous. I think that only made my dog a lot worse! once I started watching your videos, and a couple of other people that are not all about positive because that’s not even how I parent lol it makes no sense to me what so ever and actually the same trainers came from the rescue where I rescued him and that just said a lot to me he was there for four months His owner died of a drug overdose and he was found in the same hotel room with his owner who was deceased. A few days later he was locked in a bathroom, scared. just a really crappy situation and with the trainers at the rescue where I got him he didn’t even walk on a leash for them or anything. They actually told me that I was the first person that they actually watched him Walk beside and look up at me and behave himself really but he’s been an amazing dog. We just have those little issues with stranger danger type stuff and people coming over to the house but I completely understand now that it was my energy of being nervous because they basically instilled in me that he was reactive and biting it other dogs and I did witness it firsthand a few times. I’ve had dogs run up on us and the times where I was scared and nervous and not confident at first were the ones that were just a crappy situation, but I have to say from everything that I’ve learned so far it’s consistently getting better. I did just purchase the 280c e-collar of yours and I’m so excited to try the technique with the pager because I think this is gonna make a world of a difference, and I do use the 2.25 Herm Springer prong … I quickly learned. He wanted to go after everything that moved when I first brought him home. I don’t think he was used to being outside at all and after doing the math he had been with his owner for three years and when I got him was just at the time when Covid lockdowns were just letting up and so I don’t think he was socialized at all but yet he’s always had excellent manners when it comes to food. He has no food aggression or anything like that that I’ve seen. He leaves our food right alone it can be right in front of him he’ll drool, but he won’t go after it , he waits at the door for me to go out first for me to go down the stairs for me to tell him when to come in or out of the vehicle. He’s a really good boy so Tom I appreciate you so much and all you do for people you really are making a huge difference in peoples lives so thank you Tom!!!!❤❤

Omg I totally LOVED these owners, they are responsible, sensible and smart people! I'm sorry they couldn't really help Leo be a sociable puppy but he gave them tools to work with and live responsibly with what they had when other trainers straight up would say to euthanize or give him up.
