Aging in place design incorporates stylish elements that make it easier for seniors, the elderly, or even midlifers like me to live comfortably at home. Aging in place design considers possible physical limitations like arthritis, osteoporosis, need for a wheelchair, and other potential age-related issues. I’m 82, living on 2nd floor of a 2 floor condo. I had a hip replaced in 2019, by myself, walking up and down 24 steps, carrying food etc. I go to gym 3 days a week and play 9 holes of golf. I have 2 sons that do not feel I need any assistance. I would like to have this girl as my daughter. Lucky mother-in-law.

I think my fav thing is that you have your mother close enough to take care of her, but she has her own privacy of her own apartment without paying those high rent prices! Retirement does not leave much in SSA ! The 2nd fav option for the "aging" you displayed was the "lift." How much was that lift? What a great idea!

Thanks, @Johanna. Yes, having my MIL near while she can still maintain her privacy and independence has worked well for everyone. The lift was pricey-close to $10K-but it's been worth every penny. Last week the EMTs had to come (low blood sugar, she's fine now) and they were so happy to have the lift to use to bring her downstairs.

As an elder with a balance disorder, I loved the vertical bar to hold onto getting into the shower. However, that bar is probably too far away to hold onto while actually showering. I added a horizontal bar on the main wall of the shower so I could hold on while showering or to grab if I lost my balance while in the shower. Also loved the shower seat - beautiful and functional! Thanks for all the good ideas.

Important video. I cared for elderly, infirm in our home. I then planned our new retirement space. Electric outlet below toilet for a bidet. Extra electricity by bed for machines not yet needed. Carpet able to hide spills and low pile. I prefer portable shower stool as shower helper often needed. Grab bar by toilet. microwave at counter. Providing a cleaning lady sets everyone at ease. Other children could gift it.

The toaster oven is nice because it shuts off after the cook time is complete. For people with memory issues it's safer than the oven.

Yup, that was my first observation: stairs for an 81 yr old? While she may be spry, some are not at that age. The lift is beautiful as well as functional.

I have had a hand held shower in the bathroom for years.Always with the longer hose.Not only for showering but it has been great for washing the dog and cleaning the shower. It's especially helpful when you sit to shower !!

I completely agree with you. A handheld shower is very useful. My MIL didn't like it and asked us to switch it back to the stationary one. Go figure.

Several things we did in our retirement home remodel last year: 1) All pull-out drawers for the kitchen's lower cabinets cabinets, 2) Dishwasher raised 10 inches so we don't have to bend over far to load and unload it, 3) Front loading washer and dryer with interior lights and on raised pedestals, and 4) lip-free shower and step-free exterior doors. I wanted an induction cooktop, too, because I think it's much safer than electric, but hubby insisted on gas.

My husband insisted on gas, too, since there's a good chance we'll eventually use this space and rent out our house. For your raised dishwasher, is that part of your counter at bar height?

@@livingthemidlife715 The counter tops are all 36" high except at the dishwasher.. The raised dishwasher sits between the main sink and the refrigerator, and the counter height there is 45". (I think one could incorporate the idea into a bar, though.) There is a shallow drawer under it, so that bottom space isn't wasted. There is 10+" of room between the 45" counter top and the cabinets above, which is plenty to put a toaster or other small appliance. I'm surprised so few people do this. I love it.

I hope your MIL is very happy here. You put a lot of thought and effort into this. I’ve seen a lot of supposed in law suites/apartments that were not well thought out for aging. I was very concerned about the stairs but then you showed the lift. What a brilliant solution. We put in a walk in shower for my mother also. I wonder if we will regret not having the no step kind as well. We do have two grab bars and a fabulous built in bench with hand shower. We need to somehow move our laundry room upstairs for her. I loved all of your ideas.

I love that people are choosing this way of life, 2 1/2 yrs ago my husband passed away and found myself in a 3 bedroom 2 bath colonial just me and a cat ! It was lonely ! My daughter and her husband agreed to move in and has worked out great . I gave them the up stairs which they used the huge master suite for a living room , they have a full bath and the other two bedrooms, downstairs I put up sliding doors on the “dining room “ which is now my bedroom and have a bathroom across the hall for me ,we share the kitchen and I have my living room , I pay the mortgage and they pay the rest ( cable,heat,electricity water) about 5 months after moving in they found out they were pregnant!! They both work so I babysit, I love every minute of it! Lol ! When mommy comes home , meme gets to go relax! Lol ! We had a few “rules in place” and I stay out of their relationship! If you go into respecting each other space , it will work out fine. It makes me sad to think of all the elderly people that are alone , and don’t have anyone!

You did an awesome job with her apartment. My only suggestion would be to add pull out shelves. It’s hard when you have arthritis to get down under a cabinet, speaking from experience, to pull something out. The great news is that sliding shelves can be added to a standard cabinet 😃

This video is really helpful, thank you. I also have a balance disorder & would be more comfortable with a second grab bar inside the shower enclosure, but hadn't thought of using a stool; great idea, as is the hand held shower head. The reach & grab gizmo made me laugh. I haven't needed something like that yet, but when my mother was getting along in years she still had a rather large & deep chest freezer, which was too deep for her to safely reach to the bottom. This would have been a great idea. She never actually fell in, but did have some scary moments. I love that your MIL has a bit of outdoor space she can enjoy, and the apartment is big and welcoming enough for her to entertain friends if she chooses.

Thank you for your great video. My daughter and SIL want to build me an apartment like that. I love the front porch. Curious about storage/closets. Also wondering if you could give an estimate for the renovation, including the porch, but not the elevator. I would be building in South Carolina. Thanks!

The storage is pretty sufficient for one person. There's a linen pantry in the bathroom as well as cabinets above the washer/dryer. A wall closet with sliding mirrored door in the master bedroom as well as a small closet with a door that can be locked so she can lock her things away if she's visiting her other sons and someone stays in her apartment. And there is a whole bank of cabinets where the barstools are in the main room. As for cost, I have no idea how the price would compare in South Carolina (where OF COURSE you need a porch!) It's approximately 860 square feet. (There's a half bath and a small library that I didn't show in the video.) You can probably find out the average cost/square foot for renovation or new construction in your area.

I have many health issues, one thing that has been a game-changer is being able to cook when I am home alone. I don't just have physical health issues but I also have a form of dementia. I don't use the stove when I am home alone and the oven with the stove is too difficult for me to lift things out. I found the Breville Smart Oven on Amazon. It is the size of a toaster oven but it is a convection oven. I still use the microwave to reheat food but I use the smart oven instead of a regular oven, crockpot, or toaster. I set the function (such as slow cook), the temperature, and the timer. When the timer goes off, the slow cook function switches to the warming function well all the other functions turn off when the timer goes off. If I forget I put something in the smart oven, it's ok because it turns itself off. And I don't have to bend or reach to get things in and out of the smart oven.

I have the permanently stacked apartment washer/dryer because one never has to bend down. The dryer opening is at eye level. While they appear smaller, one can wash a good sized load of laundry and they actually use water (unlike the front loading, water saving type where clothing never really feels/smells clean) and have a real agitator instead of a short bump at the bottom of the drum.

Great looking! I'm 72 and have a mild form of MS/disability, just use a cane and live on a ground floor 2 bedroom, 1 bath condo apt with washer/dryer/dishwasher with a huge wrap around deck not far from the beach in New England! Where did you get the wooden whale over the stove?! I had a stone/slate whale like that over my stove, but it broke and couldn't be fixed! Would love to have something like you have again. Thanks for sharing!

Would change the gas stove for one of the electric induction styles. Stove top does not get hot, there is no open flame. A very nice place for mama.

Nah, most people, myself included, can't stand to cook on electric stoves, especially those that have grown up with them. A carbon Monoxide detector and sturdy knobs should suffice.

I think our electrician ordered the heat pump, but you can find the same one on Amazon. amzn.to/3jmH9Ok Ours is this Mitsubishi, but there are other brands as well, some of which are less expensive. I don't remember if it used 110V or 220V. Since the apartment is over the garage we have both. Your electrician will know.

There’s a lot of different mini split systems out there. We have two in the upstairs of our cape cod style house. I think it cost about $5000. If you’re interested it’s best to get bids from good HVAC companies in your area. There is a lot involved in installing them.
