You've all heard it before. "We can't find qualified workers". What this really means is companies want you to have 30 years experience but only be 35 years old, work 50-60 hours a week, and start at an entry level salary.
It's called natural selection though. The smarter ones prosper and procreate, weaker folks end up dead branches. It's sad but thankfully we aren't the only animal species to do this, just the only one to use fiat cotton paper.

@charlie cheeseface vetaran disable here. Honorable discharge in 2010. Last job end of 2010. By the time the VA decided to take serious my case it was on 2013. But it was not till 2017 and 2018 that the VA aproved any medical intervention. By the time it was done I had suffer so much damage that one of my ankles can't be saved. So since the end of 2010 I had not being able to work. And no financial help from the VA, even though they did pay for both my surgeries they deny it ever happend. So would you give a job to a disable veteran that cant run nor stand for periods of time or lift weight and mainlly has not worked since 2010? Its easy to talk about others when you not on their shoes.
Hire yourself! What are your skills? Learn some things and take a class or two. Learn what it is people want and sell it to them. Start a business and do not buy a license to do it. Start the business and if it works then get legal. Do you like dogs? Walk dogs for people. Start an office cleaning business and hire others to do the work. Buy parking lot stripe painting machine and find lots that need new lines painted, tell the owner that fresh lines helps people see he is open for business and cares about his presentation, the first thing they see... Possibilities are endless. Hunt for meteorites! They are valuable and can be found with a metal detector.

Yea. I'm 60 and have been unemployed for 18 months. Either the SSA needs to move the early retirement age to 55 and/or make being unemployed more than 6 months if you're 55 or older a disability. Because that's what age is now. If you CAN work but are being discriminated against because you are older, those who discriminate against older prospective workers are breaking a law that is unenforceable which makes it a useless law so older workers are disabled as a result.
I know how it's like. I got laid off from 2 great paying jobs. When I turn 50, couldn't find any job in my field. So I took a part-time job as a crossing guard, crossing kids near my house(10 minute walk🚶♂️). Just turn 62 & file for early social security, as well. Not the best paying job, but it's the most fun job I've ever had. The smile 😀 on the kids faces make it so rewarding that I truly love what I do, something that I never experience before.😀
I am 52 years old and was laid off my factory job of 13 years in 2009, drew unemployment and searched for work. I got lucky and a good friend of mine started a construction and home improvement company, I was hired as an estimator and material scheduling at $9.00 per hour, my health insurance and being close to home more than made up for the low wage. It lasted for almost 2 years and they went out of business, since then I have taken any side jobs I can find, painting, cleaning, anything. In 2009 I had two 401k's that took a major hit after the housing market crash and what was left I had to cash in to stay afloat. Tough times, I have very little now but not hopeless. Still trying but it does seem to be stacked against me due to my age.
if your over 50, cut your spending, pay your savings first, downsize your home, stay healthy. Yeah, hunkerdown. this is the new economy for over 50 yr old people.
It has nothing to do with being over 50. Any age. That includes if you're 20. Things are not getting better, they're getting worse and that's for everyone, not just older people.
I own 20 houses I live in the second to smallest house I live Frugal but live good I travel but I never worried about trying to look like something that I was not
It's absolutely age discrimination. I've been out looking for work and in the last two weeks I was denied for positions. They don't say it's your age but when you walk into the interview you can tell by the looks on their faces and how fast the interview ends
I got a job at 59. But I've been in sales all my life. I was given the key to the place within a few months. I know older people are loyal, dependable and trustworthy. And those are the exact words my employer used to describe me. I'd like to add another word. Grateful!
This happened to my wife, they laid off everyone in her department but her why, well she's already doing the job of 2 people..She has no college degree and yet the managers come to her for most of the answers, she's a trainer as well and she learns fast...It would take a least a year for any kid coming out of college(BA, PHD) to get up to speed with want she knows and yet my wife is very humble.

I worked in healthcare for 30 years before losing my last job in 2009 at the height of "The Great Recession". I was 57 at the time, and as the lady from Boston College predicted, I was not able to find another job either in my field or anywhere else. Prospective employers either claimed I was "overqualified" or "underqualified" or had "been out of work in that area ONE month too long (I'm not kidding"), or did not bother to respond to my applications at all. I finally gave up after three years and hundreds of job applications. I was 60 by now, and was forced to accept the fact that I was no longer employable.
So people at 79 are just about as viable as they were when they were 65 says the doctor? Most people simply don't survive their 70s, much less make it to 79. Dead is not viable. 100 is the new 60 and so it goes. Don't worry, your social security will be there when you reach the new retirement age of 105. Wow. I knew people in pretty good physical shape who all died between ages 65 and 70. I have seen very active viable 70 year olds dead at 73. This is a fantasy that people live so much longer so they can work like dogs until they drop.

when I was 50 I was looking for work it was hard. lots of experience but age was a factor. I did find a full time job but it was low wages. to make long story short God gave me a really good job. it is a blessing .I'm 60 now and hope to run with this one till I retire. Thank you Lord

I'm a gen Zer, barely turned 21 and honestly the way I see it is if you didnt save and invest back in your prime, rather than wasting money like there was no tomorrow I cant say I feel bad. That's why I've been saving and investing the small amount of money I get because I realize if I figure out a way to move myslef up im going to be like them. As for my mom she, is not too worried about her etirement plans because before my dad passed away he bought up land down in one of the safest parts of Mexico, it's safe because the government actually stops crime from spreading there but only because Americanslive there. My dad understood that unless you're super wealthy here you wont survive on a 1,200 month retirement pension. He started building a house down there because one of his buddies did the same, yearly property tax in that area is 1000 pesos(50USD). A 1,200 check would allow you to live as if you are a rich person. Many people I know, both white and Latinos are flocking across the border because a lot of them realized that they wont make it here, especially with the costs of living rising.

If you go online and you see the online job app and it is asking you for the year and won't let you complete the job app, then immediately forward the job app to the AG's office so that way the place of employment who has put that on there can get in trouble for it.

In today's economy a lot of Boomers can't afford to retire, but on the other hand employers hesitate to hire them. And I think the reasons they come up with are ridiculous. Older people actually make better employees. Besides there are laws against age descrimination, but hard to prove, and not really enforced. It's tough at an age where life should be peaceful and settled.

@@lostcause2137 That's not the main reason, as employers still get reduced group rates for their labor force. The real reason older people don't get hired is because businesses today focus more on speed rather than accuracy & quality. The white collar manager or executive want employees producing the maximum output possible, even if that output isn't always correct or of a substandard nature. This speed can be more likely put forth by a younger employee in their 20s versus anyone over age 50 who, although may be more experienced and have more technical knowledge in the field that they're involved in, just can't produce the same fast paced results as their younger counterparts.
I'm 57 and the last thing I want is a job. Happily retired. I don't know what the day is most of the time....weekends have no meaning....and my decisions usually concern where I ride my motorcycle to get coffee.

William Wilson Cool. My dad retired at 55 and past away at 85. Mom retired at 50 and 95 years old going strong. I'm retiring in 2020 before I'm 50. Home paid off long ago and completely debt free. I make $120k-$160k a year but I've been saving and investing so much through the years I've always lived on less than $50k/yr. and within my means. Been working with my accountant recently and going to the retirement workshops at work. With the two pensions,Roth 401k,IRA,investments,and passive income I should be fine. My 401k is over 1.2 million with $600k in the Roth side and Roth IRA is over $400k. Social security will be close to $40k/yr and pensions are about the same which is more than enough. Free lifetime flight benefit is nice too. All I need to do is finish remodeling and I'm good.
Government, corporate, and personal policies conspired to create this problem. Stealing from Social programs, cancelling pensions in favor of making the employee save for their own retirements through 401k’s , and wants overriding needs throw most off the cliff. Fortunately I worked toward paying off the house, before another’s negligence ended my working life at 56. Our regular bills are around $700 a month plus property tax which fluctuates. If necessary the bills could be trimmed down, but only slightly. My real fear is the inflationary increases that are totally out of my control.

You're partially right. The income tax law changes in the early 70s forced companies to dump their pensions (for tax reasons too complicated to explain here) so the Congress responded by passing ERISA. CPA here, lived and worked through this time.
i got laid off this year and finally got an offer after 5 months of applying to hundreds of jobs i did decline an offer because i didnt think it was the right fit, i recommend temp agencies if u need help finding work.
Temp agencies are a good start. I agree. I been doing contract work for a while and getting paid pretty good. Hopefully soon I will get full time employment.

I'll be 70 in a few days, and I feel as well as when I was less than half my age. What you eat has a lot to do with how healthy you remain. I grow some of my food, which also helps me exercise since I have to carry 40 pound bags of compost. I admit it can be a bit of a struggle but i manage. I also cut my expenses to the bare bottom, have all I need already.
When I turned 62, I filed for my social security. It was the smartest decision I could ever have made. Incredibly and ironically I'm doing better now than when I struggled to find work and it's a damn shame. I earned a 4 year college degree at age 23, but never found decent long term work during my youth in the DC area!! At least now, for the first time in my adult life-- I don't have to worry about how to eat and keep the utilities on at the same time. I should add that I'm also African American. On the upside, I have owned a few homes, but you need steady and sufficient income to take care of a home. I don't want to say a college degree is a waste of time and money, but you need to choose your course of study very thoughtfully. Liberal Arts degrees are virtually worthless. Go with something math, science or tech related. Otherwise, pursue a trade or skill of some type.

The old guy that got a job at a car dealership. His attitude is an inspiration. I'd buy a car from him if I could drive. I am autistic and disabled. He has the can do attitude. I am so happy he got a job. I wish him well. I look at news segments like this and my problems don't seem too bad. I have a house paid off, a pension, a 401K and social security. In retirement I'll have a 53K yearly income minus the 401K. I hope to live on 53K a year. Even for me retirement is scary! Will this be enough to survive?
Many times I have felt as though there was definite discrimination when I applied for a job, even when I was qualified or over qualified. I am 56 and after seeing these videos I feel less alone but more annoyed when experience doesn’t matter and potential employers are nervous about providing us with health insurance.
Eisen J Eisen my grandma lived through the depression. I have asked her what it was like, life style food and so forth. She's in perfect health but doesn't have much to say about it. My grandfather ,who has passed 5 years ago, had many stories, but I wasn't Intrested then. Wish could talk to him about it now. He used to deliver paper and there were always people who would pay him "later". And there were people that would knock on the door and ask for food. His mother would save table scraps and give it to them.
It's sad, my dad is a retired truck driver and when he decided to continue driving after leaving his pre-retirement job, it was hard for him to find something decent in a short amount of time. Even though he had 21 years of experience driving 18 wheelers and the harvest is plentiful in that field, he ran into quite a few dead ends when looking for more work as a driver. He eventually found something nice just part time and stayed with it another five years.
when i was 19 yrs. old ,I decided I was going to retire @ 55 yrs. old .Well I retired at 52 yrs. old instead . I worked hard all my life, nothing was ever given to me.I did it all on my own. I understand how you feel. I have one as well. I have had my LinkedIn account since my retirement form the service in 2012. It can be difficult because many folks, I feel, are only interested in what you can do for them. Some use LinkedIn as a dating networking site. lol! :) There are free online support classes via LinkedIn on how leverage it as well. Have you given any of them a try? There is a professional version of LinkedIn but you pay for that version monthly. :)

I was thinking that you could watch this at any time in the last twenty or so years! Yeah, is it worse NOW? I'm a STEM guy as we now say, and find slim pickings despite the constant yelling about shortages and difficult recruiting. I see a lot of help wanted ads that seem like science fiction- Looking for machinist-mechanic-welder-programmers, sensitive to diversity, temporary part time.... I've been joking for years that we're getting to a twenty-year learning curve, and when you get done with THAT you'll be too old! So maybe when you get out of school and apprenticeship... your career will be like ONE YEAR of intense work, and then you get laid off.
They get huge salaries and bonuses and tell you the problem is some poor guy somewhere so you never see the unfairness. The CEO's leave with huge golden parachutes. They don't need to work after that. They are telling you to blame welfare recipients when they don't pay enough to live.

No gov't employees at these job fairs. We should have all gotten a city, state, country or federal job right out of college or H.S. Gov rarely has layoffs, get paid for every minute you work, more vacation, no competition from the wave of overseas workers. Trim trees in a park and retire at 50 on a six-figure pension through 'collective bargaining' or work until you can't even remember your name. Government never has to be competitive as it has a lock on essential services - and it shows.
Yup, I'm turning 28 next month and I'm currently trying to get a job in one of the above sectors. Working in the private sector or other parts of the job market has no type of job security or pension whatsoever. I personally can't be in my 40s struggling to make ends meet...

I've learned to track as much as possible....then the "big picture" gets clearer every month and year that passes as I 'connect the dots' just like criminal investigators are taught! It works too! Here's just one of hundreds of factual details I have noticed to track. I track the amount of news stories and what the majority are not reporting on....big business illegal and legal corruption. They are less than 1% of all news stories yet are effecting every single working class person way more than they know. How could they know?!!....which is why it's not reported about in the first place! Then notice who people point the finger at as the "troublemakers"....other peons! Then find the few videos here about big business corruption and start comparing the number of comments.....you will find way less comments, proving even more about how people are attracted to topics they feel they know something about and other reasons. Basically, as planned, "hear no evil...speak no evil" works beautifully as planned by the media puppets who are also owned by corporate America. Connect the dots and keep noticing how it all fits together like the details of typical crime scene investigations. Opinions are so useless. Learning HOW to find the real truth takes way more time and effort....and I mean 'years', not just days or weeks! I've been doing this for 30 years and the theories I had in past are still often times being proven to be true. I never used only opinions in the past, which forced me to keep investigating month after year until too many details made it quite obvious I am looking in the right direction, so to speak. I got better as time passed too. There is way too many useless but effective 'distracting' news stories we are bombarded with daily but the comment sections prove how effective this distraction tactic works! Now we're being told the economy is doing so well as the media uses partial facts to sell this crap." 3.9% unemployment is the lowest it's been in eighteen years" as reported and I noticed how the news anchor added words to the effect that our economy is doing so well! They use these clever tactics all the time. They are masters at spinning false reality from isolated data. I call it "using partial facts to set up fictional sales agendas". It's used in sales all the time and I was a top straight commissioned sales rep and know all about this slimy crap.
My father's best advice was for me to get a government job, especially a career federal position. I should have heeded his advice. I believed that I wouldn't survive office politics and other shark-feasting that goes on.
Over 50 - sell the big house and buy on the cheap. Live like you have no tomorrows. Save like it's the last penny you have - take any job offered. And good luck - you're gonna need it.
Get self employed. I'm 62, self employed since I was 19. I Love my job, gets easier and I never want to retire. I turn down jobs and requests all the time, choose my clients. Wish I was younger only because I see soooo many ways to make a living and have fun doing it . ....Get creative, stay positive, pray often, eat, don't drink or do drugs, grab opportunities, don't think too much about everything, ignore the stupid people and others opinions. And love what you do!!
I am so anxious their today will be my tomorrow. even I am still young, but who knows what will happen in the next 10 years. there are so many cheap labors and too little jobs.
Some ideas I think that might help seniors: 1. try renting out spare room on Airbnb; 2. drive Uber/Lyft; 3. people should max the employer and self contribution of 401K when they’re young.
My grandmother is 80 and still working. She actually works at a retirement home as a caregiver. She told us that she'll work until they lay her off, or she dies... How sad is that?
I'm 58 and I work for minimum wage and I feel blessed. I'm a line cook for a very busy family owned business and what I find no matter where you go employers are always looking for employees who are dependable and consistent. Everyone I work with are young enough to be my child or grand child. I purposely choose these jobs because people are always looking for dependable employees who have good attitudes. Get rid of all the stuff, lower your expenses and be thankful. I'm having fun!

The 65 year old man needs to become more aware and real and realize he needs to sell his home and downsize and live off his social security the best he can. I got my last first job, which also happened to be my highest paying job, at age 58. I saved every dime from that job for 4 years and retired at age 62. I am not working now, but I am also not unemployed. I'm retired. Just turned 67 and I am having the time of my life. I have zero debt. Life is good.

Oligarchy is far stronger in Europe then in the States. Most millionaires in the States are first generation and most wealth doesn't last past two generations. Europeans have thousand plus year wealthy families. If someone is poor and has no desire to ever become anything better than yes Europe is the place to be. Their basic needs will be taken care of and they will grow old watching the kids and grandkids live a life of poverty where their basic needs are provided for. If someone is poor and desires for either themselves to move into the middle class or their kids/grandkids than the States is much better to live in. Gullible people think otherwise because the States media is all about showing the worst of America to get higher ratings whereas European media is always trying to deflect from its own problems onto others; mainly the States so their citizens don't realize how bad of a situation they are in.
This is why a lot of companies hire young people on temporary contracts these days. This way they can avoid paying pensions, benefits and bonuses, get rid of people easily, no responsibility etc. But you're demonised if you're poor, especially in the US. No matter what you earn, it's never enough.
OK 7 years later and it has changed in that I found a job paying half my previous. Young people are accepting low pay because they were taught that unions are bad.. Sorry pops you can't knock on a door for a job anymore it is all done online.
People shouldn't wait until their money runs out. Sell that big empty house, furniture, etc., pay off all debt, DOWNSIZE, cancel memberships and create a tight budget. Do whatever it takes...Take 2 PT jobs, start an online business, do consulting, take night classes, improve tech skills (what person on this planet never heard of Twitter?!), update your appearance (new hairstyle, etc)... 🙇

The biggest discriminators that discriminates based on age is the US government. Military, police, fire departments, FBI, CIA, DOJ, US Marshalls , Secret Service, TSA, FAA, etc all discriminate based on age.

It is encouraging to hear that a 79-year-old can still cut it. The problem is this youth-oriented culture and the corporate world in which people are always replaceable when it comes to the bottom line. Profits over people!
Don't list the years graduated if listing your education on your resume. Also, if you have a college education, only put that on, not your HS diploma as well. If you have a degree, employers know you already graduated HS, that is just a waste of space on your resume. Also only go back about 10-20 years max on your job history, most employers don't need to know/care what you did back in the 1980s or 1970s.
This is actually really good advise that I don't think older Americans know or understand. I also don't think they understand that education is continuous. My mom says she shouldn't have to go back to school, yet I can't tell you the number of people over the age of 50 who never bothered to learn how to type. My father graduated from college in 1972. There are a lot of advancements in every field since 1972 however many older people feel like they should have to learn anything new, why?
I'm 71 and they all just love my resume. But when it comes to the interview, not so much. I actually had one say, "Well you're more than qualified . . . buuut"
This was made during the recession but it is still true in better times. Americans in general do not value the wisdom that comes with aging. We focus on modernism and the glory of youthfulness.
I feel like if you are 65 or older and have worked at least 20 years combined you should be able to relax and society will take care of you. Older people should be able to enjoy their golden years
I'm 57 yrs old...Everytime I go for an interview I get the same response..You should be retiring at your age. To old to work..to young for Social Security. Corporations just don't want to pay what we are worth.
I got laid off at Christmas time 4 years ago by a well known company. I was 45 years old at the time. Since then, I've applied to several jobs, and no one even has the decency to call back or even send a letter with their "someone more qualified" BS line. I've turned to self employment. I do a lot of internet work, and I also do a lot of the app gigs. Right now, as an Independent Contractor, I'm doing pretty well, but some people want to take away the Independent Contractor status on those app gig jobs and make people employees. I really do not want that to happen.

The most important thing is life is "Keeping up with the Joneses": driving a luxury car, wearing new clothes, living in a family home in the suburbs and go out to clubs, cafes, restaurants (instead of just staying home). If you do, everyone will admire and respect you and be your friend. If not, you will be considered a loser, a failure, a nobody, and no one will be your friend or want to marry you.

Yeah...I went through this crap. Not pleasant....I thought I had a good chance at age 54....ha!...FORGET IT. Even at age 54 those interviews don't come quick or easy any more. My son was looking at the same time - he got 3 times the amount of interviews I did (he was 23). IF you DO get hired...expect to make LESS than what you ONCE made before. Luckily, my present employer was TIRED of young people leaving after 1.5 years..... they actually wanted an "old guy"...hence I got hired. They KNEW an "OLD guy" would actually stay past 1.5 years....which I have. The job is NOT easy..but I am staying so far. The job is not easy though...benefits are good, drive is MUCH shorter, manager is outstanding, but I am being paid about 7 grand less..
When I returned to the field of childcare at the age of 59, despite my education and past experience as a lead teacher, I had a hard time finding a job.
Before I was thirty, people over fifty were telling me I am too young to worry about ageism. They had pensions from jobs long ago or able to get jobs easily. I had to explain the computer system that we have to apply for jobs with, at-will employment, hard to find work simply as a woman, hard to get full-time, and then have people who did succeed in life be my age at the time wanting a person with experience. I have been told they train you. Then you need to have done an internship during college or a bit after. I feel for the older generation that has it even harder than I. They did not expect this world when job searching.
The same in my country. Getting unemployed after 50 means you have to dig your own grave, especially when you don't have much saving. I always advised young people to build their career in a way to get self-employed at least before 40.
I am moving to Philippines this year on $2,400.00......but plan to live on about $1, 600.00 per month.....there are plenty of ex pats out there that live on $1000.00 or less.....they don't live great, but better then most Filipinos...……
Oh! Don’t forget when you get hurt and you file works comp, you’ll be fired/let go. Why? With being over fifty with a claim, you become a financial burden to the company’s numbers.
Positive attitude? GREAT! And I think most of us do know that's the state of mind we have to have. But if we can, I think we also need to recognize that the playing field isn't balanced. I think the government needs to come up with new tax incentives for hiring older workers. BUT....then what about younger workers considered too young with no experience? And that is the problem here. Employers embrace their position in America, benefiting from their entrepreneurial freedoms and expected labor resources in more of a self centered mindset, rather than treating business in America as if it's a deal we all make with one another that in order to work has to reward both sides equally. Today in America, it is no longer a good deal to work for someone else. There's many employers that are extremely good to their workforce, and there are even more that really don't care what the state of life is for their workers. With inflation and capitalism on steroids in this country with a 'demand' to continue to profit more and more perpetually each and every year over the last at absolutely ANY cost, it's a system of greed without any concern for the future of the country as long as they get theirs right now. THAT is a failing system destined to collapse! The stability of America properly translated means the stability of the overall population, not just the business interests. So they can pay less, require more productivity, move jobs overseas. But are these things that will help America sustain today's economy and future existence? So not much is ever said about the foundation of all this, which is the abuse of free enterprise in a manor that doesn't support the country, but rather gradually desintigrate's it. In the end, where will corporate profits come from?

As a young African man, this really scares me cause if it can happen to Americans it is most likely going to happen in other countries. I studied in China so I have an advantage of speaking mandarin but I really wanna stay home and develop my country. I am really scared cause once I leave home I don't think I'll ever look back. My Mom actually insists on me leaving but I'll do my best not to sell out my country which sounds silly given that our politicians do it on a daily basis.
Same here. The 3 of us that have been employed the longest all received the same poor review. It's no secret that they do not want the older workers,, because we cost more in terms of salary.

Yes, same here in Europe: when I was young I got every job I went for. Now I'm older and disabled nobody wants to hire me plus with my extreme fatigue working on top of all the daily tasks is difficult, I do my art when I can but because I'm not 'known' it isn't worth anything and I can't sell it even at knock-down prices and I know some of it is good enough. A really high percentage of disabled people are unemployed, I lost my job when I got injured and have been trying to survive on social security but it doesn't cover my rent = scared of becoming homeless. The stress is killing me - but slowly & invisibly. When you work and can earn enough to live on you get a feeling of pride and self-worth, I really miss that - and the feeling of security I had knowing I could somehow get a job, all gone now and I feel unwanted. Shame older people's & disabled people's skills aren't valued and wanted because we have lots to offer but may need adaptations in order to work and emplyers are scared of all that and how we might be.
I see lots of older, even elderly people working in local grocery stores, so must be easy to get a job in this venue, but the jobs are physical with lots of walking, standing, bending, etc... I am not physically disabled, but have tinnitus and the dizziness that accompanies this malady (fluctuates in intensity) and is the reason I dropped from full to part-time at age 60 (61 now). I work in Information Technology (help desk) and also have to do audiovisual setups so I don't sit at a computer all day. There's lots of walking, standing, lifting, crawling on the floor under desks. I'm usually light-headed when moving around a lot. If I got to the point of being unable to do physical movement, I'd be done at this job, as only our network administrator and webmasters really sit all day. Luckily (luckily?) I'm old enough for a pension and SS next year if needed, as there don't seem to be many less demanding desk jobs for people in their sixties and up.
