Due to the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has become a controllable chronic illness and no longer a death sentence as it was prior to the mid-1990s. Many people living with HIV are expected to live well into their older years. Currently, there are roughly 1.2 million people in the United States diagnosed with HIV and half of them are 55 years of age and older. Almost 20% of all newly diagnosed cases of HIV are among people over age 50.

Shocked that this question hasn't already been discussed to honest.... Long term HIV+ here (23 years) on therapy for 20 of those years and yes the therapy has been great but I have noticed I'm now riddled with Arthritis (aged 48) and already needing a hip replacement.... makes me question what else I should be preparing for as this chronic illness just seems to offer challenges that no one really thinks about because they just think this magic pill we take everyday has solved the problem
