Wonderful! Do you guys ever work with cacao as the understory instead of coffee? Do cacao systems also need to be pruned at specific times to induce flowering?
Yes, cocoa works perfectly as the understory. You can even have both plants at the same system, as cocoa occupies the the low/medium layers and coffee is a strictly low later plant. (check out this video:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JAdfmSKrtog.html) Cocoa doesn't need flower inducing though because it comes from evergreen forests, whereas coffee comes from deciduous forests. It's still important to prune the systems for the maintenance of adequate sunlight, to provide organic matter for the soil and maintain vigorous and healthy plants!
Hi, would coffee under avacado work well? If yes, how close should I plant it with avacado? Thanks for your videos. Very helpful and interesting indeed. Ashish from Kathmandu Nepal.
Yes my friend.. Avocados are great mothers for coffee's! Me, I plant avocados by seed every 4 meters in lines 6 meters (you will then be left with a wealth of choice for your best trees to thrive) apart from each other.. the coffee at 1 meter spacing both on the avocado's lines as in double rows in between them. do plant other trees to ensure biodiversity and organic matter (banana's and eucalyptus amongst others) for healthy crops!
could you guys show us the farm a little bit more? i really enjoy watching but something i feel like not knowing what is reallyhappening in the farm i just have an abstract idea.
thanks for sharing your knowledge, guys About that system in the video. In those veg beds, between the tree rows, that you intend to introduce coffee, will you put it in single rows, or in consortium with tree species? at what time of the year does the cashew lose its leaves in your region?? in my region there are many deciduous species, but they tend to lose their leaves in winter, in the dry season
Hey pedro thanks for the comment! We have introduced coffees both in a single line, double lines, sometimes even in triple lines.. And yes you can consortium things when you go ahead and replant your coffee. This year I chose to plant Ginger and a Papayas with cheeky strawberries but do note for that I had to give an extra pruning on the existing tree lines which will also be key if you choose to introduce other trees in consortium with the coffees. Our cashews drop their leaves late winter so just in time for the 1st humidity and the flowering of the coffee. Any more doubts do bring them to us through our Facebook group, that's where we are really interacting and learning from each other thanks again pedro, hope to see you there!
Would you happen to know what the pollinator(s) of cashew trees are? My cashew tree is going into bloom now but I’m not seeing any pollinator activity ard the blooms, though there are blue banded bees and honey bees flying around
Yes, there's people doing continual veg production in these systems. It's just a matter of regular pruning in order to maintain proper sunlight. Check out the last module, we talk a bit about it. Also, during the follow up videos to the course, we show replanting of vegetables in established areas
@@AgroforestryAcademy making my way through the modules now :), lot value thank you for sharing. Has anyone done Oats, soy, rye, rice in system like this yet ?
@@gavinmatthews5618 Yes, there's people doing grains. The management will be very similar to continual vegetable production, as both vegetables and grains grow best in clearings, so we're regularly pruning the trees in the system, putting the organic matter on the soil and replanting the annuals
The entire African continent " ought" to be attuned to the synthropic agroforestry equation. There is no other way to free our population from poverty and food scarcity.
