Climate-proofing approaches such as bioengineering, agroforestry, and reforestation interventions are critical for the long-term viability of small-scale rural infrastructure to protect roads from landslides and erosion. We are collaborating with the government of Timor-Leste to implement this concept for rural infrastructure in Aileu, Baucau, Ermera, Liquica, Lautem, and Viqueque.
The UNDP project Safeguarding rural communities and their physical assets from climate-induced disasters in Timor-Leste, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), has constructed 2.3 km of rural road in Aldeia Bautalo, Suco Lisadila, Post Administration Maubara, Liquica municipality, with bioengineering, agroforestry, and interventions, in collaboration with local NGOs Joint Venture RAEBIA and Rupantaran. Through community consultation and land identification, farmers contributed and offered their land, totaling approximately 3.68 hectares, to plant a total of 2,404 trees along the construction of a rural road with plantations such as Mahoni, Gamal, Casuorina, Lamtoro, Jack fruit, and Snakefruit.
Agroforestry investment protects the road from landslides and erosion and intends to boost the community's revenue through fruit plantations that may be sold in the future.
