On February 17, 1991, at approximately 1:00 a.m. (Persian Gulf Time), a U.S. Bradley Fighting Vehicle (Bradley) and an M113 Armored Personnel Carrier (M113) were destroyed by two Hellfire missiles fired from an Apache helicopter commanded by Lieutenant Colnel Ralph Hayles. Two U.S. soldiers were killed and six others were wounded in the incident.
The incident occurred after U.S. ground forces, which were deployed along an east-west line 5 kilometers north of the Saudi-Iraqi border, reported several enemy sightings north of their positions. In response, ground commanders called for Apache reconnaissance of the area. A team of three Apaches subsequently found two vehicles, which appeared to be those described by ground forces. These vehicles were, in fact, a Bradley and an M113. (flight-level.com)

Draxelzs I used pilot and gunner iinterchangeably here Anyone that is in control of the weapons and trigger has the authority. For an A-10 it is the pilot for the Apache it is the gunner it really doesn't matter what what I call them. The guy that pulled the trigger and friendly fired should have refused the guy on the ground. It was obvious he was unsure and he allowed himself to be bullied into it by his subordinates.

easy to say the pilot was trigger happy but chances are he wanted to destroy an enemy before they had a chance to take a shot at them. a hovering helicopter in open desert probably feels very vulnerable to they guys inside it. and after the 1st shot the pilot was in more of a hurry, knowing they had basically exposed themselves to any threats in the area.

Now the Apache uses new navigation tech. An actual moving map so they know exactly where they are. The early models didn't have that and situational awareness was degraded. After this incident he spent every penny he had to develop an identification system for combat and the Pentagon refused to address it. The Brits, French and USA ect have to this day not agreed on a system. Something as cheap as a $50 IR panel could have prevented this. Hell, the missiles they fired cost $34k each at that time.

It's crazy how the mentality changes. If it's the enemy it's fine, you can rationalize it in your mind that you are doing the right thing - even laughing about blowing them up and killing them. As soon as it's known that it isn't the enemy, they suddenly humanise the victim and feel the range of emotions you would feel for killing a friendly: remorse, regret, sadness.
@dontanton7775
@dontanton7775 2 года назад
That is because the military and political process (and these might be harsh words, but in a sense it is true) "brainwashes" us into demonizing the other side as something that is out to kill you, where you have no choice but to act. While the science of psychology shows us the opposite is true: The vast majority of humans have the same needs, same fears and same prejudices. Only a really small percentage of any human population is inherently evil. The others are not evil, but are mainly just acting out of an externally induced belief system. Which basically means: If I can successfully make you believe that I am evil and that I will kill you, you will shut down the part of your brain that reflects upon this. Because from a biological evolution perspective, the risk you would take ignoring me as a threat is too high and an error in judgement might cost you your life. Basically your brain will enter "better safe than sorry" mode. It is very easy to abuse, and it is how entire nation's populations can be made ready to kill. E.g. see Germany in WW2.

We lost two warriors (fusiliers) to friendly American fire in 1991 too. 7 guys I think it was. Happened almost exactly the same as this. First warrior went up and a couple jumped out the second to assist. As they got to the first one the second they just got out of was hit. One of the guys that got out the second warrior was a good friend of mine Dave Evans. He died of cancer last Christmas. Said the sight was horrific. I was out there though not in that battalion. Neither Dave nor I nor anyone I spoke to who was out there blamed the Americans for it. They thought they were helping us and we've heard the voice recording, they were devastated when they found out what they'd done. Mistakes happen.

I saw the apaches firing their missile and then an explosion. The next evening my job given to me by our First Sergeant was to transport the bodies to the proper authorities.

@johnmportela
@johnmportela 8 лет назад
+PrinceSoviet When I arrived on scene the bodies were already in the body bags. I was told if I wanted to open the bags up to look, I declined. From what I was told, they had to pick up bits and pieces of the two soldiers, or at least what they could find. By the time we arrived to the area where we thought we needed to be to drop them off it was pitch black for it was about 10pm. There was no moon out and from what I can recall, no stars so it had to be overcast. You literally couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Anyway, I was left to remain with the deceased while the other two soldiers went to find out who was taking them from us. They seemed to be gone for quite some time because my mind started playing tricks on me and I started to imagine voices coming from the body bags as the two soldiers were scratching to get out. At that moment the two arrived back to the truck and scared the crap out of me because I didn't see or hear them approach. After that I don't remember anything else about that night.

The Gulf War used a LOT of new technologies, and, combined with the fact that coalition forces were advancing rapidly, it's not surprising that there were many friendly-fire incidents. But, as with all wars with new technology, the mistakes were analyzed heavily (to the point where videos like this were actually declassified), and we've made amazing strides since. Friendlies now have tons of IFF capability that they didn't have then. I also feel compelled to point out how right that historian was; wars are ugly. And friendly-fire incidents will always happen, though hopefully we can make them less common. The problem with all the people here in the comments is that they have never had to fight for anything in their lives, much less go to war. They don't understand that reality isn't black and white. They don't understand or appreciate how complex life is. They want a blue-pilled, sugar-coated story where the good guys win with no casualties or mistakes, and the bad guys lose and are forever condemned. But that's not real life. That is history that is written by the victor. In the US, and in most modern countries, we generally try to emphasize our mistakes (such as making this video public instead of hiding it) to give people just a little bit of perspective, but we're having trouble because the media now only cares about what is "politically correct", instead of what is actually true. They act like anything less than a feel-good, casualty free victory makes us evil. As if they expect soldiers to be gods, and be infallible. We need more videos like these being made. Ones that criticize constructively, but don't condemn. Ones that look at the whole picture and say "there was no bad guy here. Just good guys and regular guys that made grave mistakes." This is important, because every human being on the planet thinks they're right. People don't go to war just to be miserable; they do it because they believe it's right. But in all parts of life, no matter how righteous we think we are being, we CAN still cause harm, and we need to address that. No matter how good your intentions, you can make mistakes, and you must own up to them so that you can learn from them.

These are not terrorists they were fighting. This is the Gulf War. They were fighting a professional standing army. What was their excuse back then for dehumanizing their enemies? Same attitude was shown in the video clips for A10 Warthog friendly fire incident in Iraq War, yet again against a professional army. If they were not so gung-ho about killing people for adventure then maybe they would take more time to verify friendly from foes and these kind of accidents could have been avoided. They were not even willing to let go of two injured combatants. Thankfully their guns jammed.
@macgyver112
@macgyver112 5 лет назад
Dehumanizing has nothing to do with terrorism alone, it's part of how every military trains their soldiers. When you go to shooting range, you're taught to engage targets when you see one without thinking too much of it. You don't see any reference to humans at all, everything is just described as targets. Terrorism, brutal regime and so on are just one way to dehumanize the enemy some more if some soldiers feel hesitant to engage.

Those Soldiers in the APCs must have been shocked to think Iraqis could strike them so accurately. Must have been a nightmare.

Can you imagine if the vehicles had some sort of electronic identifier visible on the AH 64 HUD?
@kuhaku9587

They kind of had it already, the Apache refused to target the vehicles, it should have been enough of a hint. I think now they have better systems to prevent such things but if the one in command want to be an idiot and refuse to trust what his computer is saying... what can you do.

Can someone explain to me how shooting two survivors from a destroyed armoured vehicle is different from shooting a pilot under parachute? Just asking.

I had to do some searching after viewing this and it appears the incident drove Ralph Hayles to become rather obsessed with IFF(Identify Friend or Foe) technologies, accruing somewhere in the ballpark of $150,000 personal debt. He developed what IMO appears to be a simple, robust preventative measure against blue-on-blue, and yet no one in the pentagon cares to pursue it, which to me is very sad and misguided.

So much hate going to the Apache crew, I don't see why. The only thing I see them guilty for, which played a role in the actual friendly fire incident, is not accounting for the wind blowing them around and thus getting their position screwed up. Otherwise, they were directed to fire at a target they were told was enemy by the guys on the ground. Hayles even went to reconfirm the targets with the ground commander, when he was told the second time they were enemy. So Hayles definitely had reservations over shooting the target, but he was told twice by the ground commander that they were enemy. The quality on the digital cameras was too poor for him to identify the targets himself. What was he supposed to do? They guy is a victim of circumstance, but he also messed up by putting himself in that position in the first place after he received orders not to.

though he was the gunner and his pilot who actually got him to the place (wrong one) kinda pushed him to fire

Hayles expressed his doubts multiple times both before and after he fired. If you're not 100% certain that it's hostile then you cannot use a gunship to fire missiles at it. What's the worst that could happen if he had refused to obey the order to fire? Probably some disciplinary action. Now compare that to the other option which is that innocent people get killed.
@Uncivildefiance
@Uncivildefiance 5 лет назад
@@Scylla94941 The worst that could happen is the enemy would accurately spot their guys, and pummel the everloving fuck out of them with everything they've got. If you're sent to give fire support and everyone tells you you're about to shoot an enemy, but you just say "nah", what are you there for? You're wasting everyone's time and the money it costs to send the helicopters out there. Even if he straight up refused to fire at the target, another helicopter would've probably come over and done it anyway.
@Scylla94941
@Scylla94941 5 лет назад
@@Uncivildefiance The two missiles they fired cost way more than sending in these helicopters to surveil the area in the first place. You're saying "could, would, probably" which are all hypothetical while the risk that these vehicles may not be enemy actually exists. This is pretty much identical to that A-10 incident where everyone tells you that it's safe to fire while your gut tells you that there is a problem and you end up shooting anyway despite feeling uncomfortable. Him saying "I hope it's enemy" after firing a deadly weapon is horrific.
@Uncivildefiance
@Uncivildefiance 5 лет назад
@@Scylla94941 Don't be a hypocrite, you were talking in the hypothetical just as I was. Gut feelings are just that, you can't let them interfere with your performance especially when multiple people direct you otherwise and it's your job to act on those directions.

This such a interesting video, Basically a helicopter unit commander decides to fly as the gunner for his first legit kills, hoping to notch his belt, which is understandable, he has been training for this moment forever, his men would have encouraged him to go and get that kill, with the intention of lots of high 5s and bud lights, maybe a couple of combat decoration , but it all went sour.

Hi Jerry, I remember you. I was Major Hulse's HMMWV driver in S-3 until we went to ODS and then I was made a part of a permanent Security Detail for the BN LNO Captain Howard (Former Scout PLT CDR) and I worked in the TOC when I was not otherwise occupied. I also drove the NBC Deuce some after PFC Fleehr ran over Lt. Shidlovski. Guess I was a roving PFC. I knew my fellow Kentuckian CPT Randolph well. Joyce Middleton understands how we all feel about her son Jeff. Straight and Stalwart!

The left vehicle is an M113 it so clear. He should have contacted HQ or something. I am just wondering isn't or wasn't any training program to distinguish vehicles from each other, in thermal/nv? Not trying to say i am an expert of some kind but this is obviously an M113. The only thing the iraqi army had back that resmebed the M113 is the OT M-60 APC.

unfortunately. That was a different mishap that occurred later on that day. I believe. Major Alec Bain (later retired as Colonel) commanded the group at the time. They were using Warrior MICVs vehicles. They wandered into an A-10's killbox (a grid given to a air group that is to destroy anything in the area) . 9 British soldiers were killed that day. and 2 of the MICVs vehicles were destroyed
