Ahihi Kinau Nature Reserve is one of the best places to snorkel
on Maui. It's a marine life conservation district, so no fishing is allowed, which means there are more fish in the water to see while snorkeling. There is also a ton of beautiful coral here. Besides the normal sea life that we usually see while snorkeling, we also saw a reef shark (not considered dangerous)!
There isn't any sand, drinking water, or life guards here so plan accordingly if visiting.

Thanks for watching! We use the GoPro HERO8 (amzn.to/3uQVBlJ). We've found that the water is usually clearest between 8-11am on mornings with no cloud coverage and no waves. We typically shoot our footage in 2K or 4K to help get a clearer shot as well.

Great video. We just got back from Oahu and Maui and we also did a lot of snorkeling. I am just curious what video settings you used for the underwater footage? I bought and used a GoPro11. Was this taken in "linear" mode? Wide mode? What resolution and frame rate? Thank you in advance.

Hey, glad you liked the video! It's been a little bit since we took this footage and I've played around with a lot of different settings, so I'm not 100% sure. But most of my snorkel footage I've shot is in either 4K 30fps or 2.7K 60fps. I think this one was probably recorded in 2.7k 60fps. I used "wide" mode for most of the shots in this video. The swimming selfie shots were in "superview". I like shooting in either 4K or 2.7K so that I can crop the video in while editing and have it still look good. I would do 4K 60fps but my video editor doesn't handle it well. I've started using "linear" for a lot of stuff recently and I like it, but I haven't used it underwater yet, so it might be worth trying.

Great video. Which location of the bay had the healthiest coral? The bay looks huge so I’m trying to figure what area to snorkel.

Hey! We parked at the Ahihi-Kinau Marine Preserve Parking Lot and followed the main trail to the water. There's really only one good entrance point from there. We went straight out/slightly left and also to the right of the entry point for everything that was in this video. There are usually other people snorkeling here around the good coral so you can kind of look at where other people are at. Far left can get waves and surfers so it usually isn't as good that way for snorkeling.

we always go to the right after we enter the water at the entry point. Look for the sign where to enter, because it's a preserve, they are trying to limit the impact of people and they want you to enter and exit from the one spot. If you go at low tide in the AM, you'll have the best snorkeling, but even on a bad day it's good here. if you follow the coast line to the right, you can actually go to the little cove that you pass on the road and then walk back to your car if you wish.

I always hear the big island has the best snorkeling, is this as good as 2 step and captain cook? It looks pretty good.

For me, I'd say this seemed to be pretty close to as good as 2 Step and Captain Cook. Really all three are great snorkel spots. Tons of fish and lots of coral at all three places.

No Ahihi Kinau is on the opposite side of the island. I believe your thinking of Honomanu Bay at mile marker 14 on the Road to Hana? It is a popular spot though, there are always at least a few people there.
