St. David's HealthCare led a panel discussion at SXSW about the use of artificial intelligence in brain mapping. Doctors at St. David's are using AI to identify connections in the brain unique to each patient.
Dr. William Rice, senior vice president of clinical innovation at St. David's HealthCare, moderated the panel AI and the Aging Brain: Decoding the Mind in downtown Austin.
One of the panelists, Dr. Dhruve Jeevan, a neurosurgeon with St. David's HealthCare and Central Texas Brain and Spine, is using brain mapping as a pre-surgical planning tool to better understand the unique connections of each of his patients with tumors. Through the use of AI, he is able to take patients' MRIs and visualize the critical brain networks to aid in preserving brain function, lowering the risk of post-surgical complications. Previously, surgeons applied knowledge from generalized brain maps to treat their patients.
