I really don't understand why studios think film grain is a bad thing when grain is where all the detail is featured in. By scrubbing it away and adding artificial detail through recent digital tools, it completely betrays how the original film used to be like and what was the intended look for the film upon release. Whats worse is when they take old dated masters and just upscale it, which is unfortunately what Cameron and Park Road did here.

The studio is Fox/Disney. They normally ensure authentic 4k scans except where directors like Lucas and Cameron intervene. Cameron removed the real grain when approving the blu ray scan and added in digital grain. So for this release it's likely he started with the de-grained master and approved AI interpolation from there. Cameron also approved the teal colour regrade for the blu (everything prior cast the colony in a blue/purple grade) and scaled it back somewhat for the 4k. TLDR studios didn't screw this up, Cameron did.

@@JimElford Yeah thats what I said lol. Cameron used AI to "enhance" his movie but then ended up making this vile mess of a 4K. Also, Disney isn't new to making bad 4K scans either. The Pirates Of The Carribean 4K is a good example.

Great review, sums it up perfectly. I won't be returning it, it looks superb - but I agree - it looks different and the cleaner look really does change the vibe of a classic movie we all know and love. I have the bluray Steelbook and it looks and sounds great, as a fan of the movie though I'll happily keep both and watch whichever version takes my mood.

I'm definitely not a purist. But I really liked this transfer. The audio is what it is without re-doing all the effects, but it's very decent compared to other 80's movies imo. I really didn't like the T2 transfer. It's in my top 5 of all time (as a movie) and I didn't buy it. If they redo it with the same technology as Aliens/Abyss, I'll be more than happy to get it. I hope Jim Cameron helps Michael Bay out with Disney/Sony (who apparently is going to do some physical media for Disney) and gets us some of the old Bay movies to 4k (The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor) Thanks for the review!

Cameron has done a Lucas here and applied a modern look to a stone cold classic, robbing it of any sense of alchemy and grit, turning characters eyes into uncanny lenses, and insisting this was his intended look when people just want the original version with occasional HDR pops. Ill stick with the incredible blu and its preserved 4.0 surround track.

I thought aliens looked ok with the new 4K transfer. I did get annoyed that the special edition digital file was only hd and standard surround. It would have been nice to have kept some of the film grain. It can be distracting a bit thought. There are a couple of scenes in an older movie Silent running where the film grain jumps out at you but it’s still good it’s there. The hd special edition came across as a bit softer with the ai treatment. I did purchase the 4K combo pack.

It’s not a new transfer, it’s the one they did back in 2008 for the 2010 Blu Ray. It’s the new AI tech they used to upscale it

I just watched the 4k blu ray last night and I thought it looked great. I understand the concerns and drawbacks that you and others have pointed out but to me the positives out way the negatives on this transfer and it's by far the best the movie has ever looked. Shane, my feelings about this transfer/restoration echo yours. Having watched this film so many times over the last twenty something years, I can’t stand this new digitally-enhanced version-it’s just a completely new experience that as you’ve said, might please those who’s never seen the film. A complete contrast to Alien 4K, which had a more traditional film restoration.

The 5.1 audio on the old blu ray anthology box is better with more base and impact then the atmos track on the 4k disc. Aliens 4k was the first movie i watch with my new cinema 40 avr in 5.2.2 atmos setup, i was not very inpressed with it but it was not the avrs fault..

I don't have an Atmos setup (I have a 5.1 with the surrounds being tri-poles slightly above and behind my head and pointing at the seating position) but am used to Atmos tracks still sounding better on my system than previous mixes (sometimes VERY noticeably so) but last night, watching the Aliens 4K for the first time (on rental) and comparing to my 2012 Blu-ray (from the Quad set) I couldn't hear any improvement at all, in fact I was thinking my old Blu-ray sounded better !

HDR is about range, NOT brightness. If there is incredible shadow detail in a dark movie, this is something that's impossible and SDR, and this is something which is an equally valid HDR showcase to impress your friends just as much as the magpie brightness stuff. A huge range of the values in PQ are reserved for shadow detail for GOOD REASONS!

Yeah, i was kinda disappointed with the AQ on all 3 JC movies. All 3 movies bass is lacking. I played the old school bluray of Aliens and the Bass sounded better & heavier. Even my Laserdisc sounded better. But the PQ was AWEsome. They jus need to get the sound better sounding....

The DI used for this release is the 2010 scan that was made for the blu-ray 2010 release. There is a ton of DNR and edge enchantement on this 4K release. That's what Cameron wants his movies to look like. This is not for me, but maybe it will appeal to others. There was also no serious HDR color grading work, only a 200 nits SDR100/1000 convertion from the 2010 grading. I did a comparison along with a custom uspacle of the blu-ray disc and a New HDR color grading on my channel.

I dont care what you say. Other reviewers totally sold me on this release. If you cant get past the look, you will never appreciate the immersive work of James Cameron. Seriously, if you watch this 4K copy a few times, you will be hooked just as you were with the VHS. Thats largely due to James Camerons 3D art direction, cinematography and set design

As a 63 year old, who saw Aliens on opening day, bought VHS, DVD, BLU Ray and now 4k Bluray. I love the new 4k. Yes it's digital looking, and that's the point. More details, and brighter shadow details provide a new experience. The Atmos mix is also decent, considering the original.

I'm sorry but the transfer is terrible. The digital tinkering is way too noticable and its downright abominable at times with the DNR and AI edge enhancement in many of the scenes. We could've gotten a proper 4k transfer from the original film negatives like Alien had a while ago, but Cameron unfortunately took the lazy way out with this transfer.

I actually love this video transfer, and I've owned the movie over the years on 'everything': Laserdisc, widescreen laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray. As Cameron has explained, the film the movie was shot on wound-up being a bit experimental and not the best of its era. I've no problem with the cleanup done on this: it's respectful, while making the film look amazing and engaging in a way I haven't experience it since the original Theatrical release. I am grateful for your technical Atmos analysis, which confirms my less-impressed take on the audio. While I still might have to watch the movie again with sound up a little higher (I had it a couple notches on the conservative side, for the neighbors' sake), but your Atmos Viewer and review confirms what I'd felt: a less-than mind blowing audio configuration. Another review from weeks back had left me expecting a lot more of it, and I just didn't think the audio track matched the level of modernization the video had been put through. Not a slouch, but not a reference quality Atmos mix, either.

I watched the new 4K disk back-to-back with the old blu-ray (Quadrology): While I appreciate a slightly enhanced color palette and the higher resolution, I think Cameron has lost all sense of proportion: This isn’t the movie I loved anymore. The grain is gone and so is all hint of filmic appearance and especially atmosphere. Cameron’s revisionary version looks absolutely clean and lifeless, the sets seem unrealistic and stagey, often cheap, and the colors seem to pop right out of a soap opera.

I’ve seen Aliens many times on many formats and I really liked this new transfer. Being able to eliminate much of the film grain while maintaining (if not increasing) most of the detail is a winning formula for me. A big thumbs up for the video on the 4K.

Totally agree with your assessment. Except the Atmos track sounds better overall, I popped in my bluray copy and the Atmos mix is much more dynamic. But not a lot in the overheads like you said.

My uncle did the soundtrack to iron eagles 2 and Care Bears, he told me 80s movies had horrible sound they would take a razor and scrape off magnetic material from audio tape to simulate a really fast fade out.

I really like this 4K transfer despite its increased detail. I agree removing the mist and grime does take away from the more cinematic look. Aliens was never an attractive looking movie. The grain was very obtrusive looking at times. It had very little detail due to the fog effects used. If any movie deserved a little TLC it would be Aliens. I think this is the best transfer to date.

I didn't like the video quality in this one at all. From what I read, they AI upscaled a 1080p transfer, not a 4K DI. I wish they would've just rescanned it in 4K (or higher), adjusted the HDR and then left well enough alone. The director of Aliens would've loved that and it would've been great, but instead we got the director of Avatar 2 mucking with things and he approved this. You might think they're the same person, but in NAME ONLY! I hate modern Cameron, love pre-Titanic 3D Cameron to death (that's where he fell in love with DNR). I thought the sound was fine... nothing special, nothing bad. Of its time. Which is how the picture should be, just in 4K. Don't understand grain haters.

I got the Vudu version a few months. I had made a 4K upscale version of the special edition, denoised, but without HDR. The Vudu DV looked damn good, I'm still thinking about the physical release to feed my Sony 800X BR player.

I was left feeling disappointed. James Cameron using AI to denoise the film became a problem for me. I prefer noise. Warts and all. I picked it up but the bluray is miles better. I wish he would stop sapping the joy out of his films and making everyone look like plastic wax figures.

I also read that this is not a true 4K scan, they reused the previous 2K scan and then applied the AI algorithm to create a 4K DI. This seems awfully shady as they will say it’s semantics. Other audiophiles have mentioned in some forums that they felt the old DTS-HD MA 5.1 has better and tighter bass.

Thanks for your honesty in regards to the digital look. You give your personal take while also acknowledging that others might have different opinions. I personally don't like the removal of Grain and AI sharpening and would prefer directors would be more "proud" if the movie was shot on film. A grade 4K scan of an analog film stock can still look great (as seen in Black Hawk Down). But I guess James Cameron wanted the movies to look this way so all we can do is moan a little bit and vote with our purchase. The old Blu-Ray of Aliens does not have the same issues and still looks good enough for me so I skip the upgrade.

There is no upscaling! 35mm film, is natural and far high definition than 4K.

that would be true if the film were scanned in at 4k or any resolution above 4k, but here they have used an old 2k master of the film and used AI to Upscale that 2k master to 4k. So here there is upscaling, if it were restored properly there would be no upscaling but it wasn't so there is.

@@tjdw5251 I cannot confirm that, but if true, that is a disaster and all the more reason to scan the best surviving 70mm blow-up materials, but know it is the exact same master as used for the 2011 Blu-ray. Sad that film stick did not hold up, but Kodak eventually perfected those types to what we know know as Vision 3. We'll see what else we find out about soon too.
