Import tariffs are the solution. With the current prices of solar cells, it makes little difference if they are 30-50% more expensive but are produced by local companies. Solar cells are not cheap disposable products where you have to squeeze every percent out of the price.

'China beating' might be a bit optimistic, but it is certainly true that we have a long way to go with Perovskites before we see their full potential. Even if perovskites don't reach the 33% of the best of silicon, if they get to 20% and are 1/5 the price of silicon, they will be the cell of choice for many applications.

@jpdj2715
@jpdj2715 9 месяцев назад
Perovskite has the inherently bigger issue of lifetime expectancy or degradation over time. So it needs to be sealed well and probably other protection or preventative measures too. AFAIK. So far, it was seen as a potential second layer under the classical silicon layer and such dual layer panels can easily raise production from 34% to 43%. With that the same area of panel produces 1/3rd more electricity. The question is how perovskite-only would behave. Another innovation that was lurking at the horizon of "solar" is the introduction of optical grids over the PV layer where each cell in the grid is an optical tunnel, guiding light from different directions to the PV layer. This would increase the time window in which the panel can convert energy at peak performance (because less sensitive to angle of light incidence - angle relative to sun) and so increases total kWh production per 24h compared to the same PV layer(s) without the funnel grid. The question is when we will see panels that do the two layers with the funnel cell layer on top. "AI" - note that the A is for "artificial" and the associated "I" (intelligence) depends a lot on how artificial it is. "Learning AI" has become easier (with more powerful compute power at lower TCO) and generative AI in that is more easy too, but it still depends on human teaching and algorithm coding. We have seen learning AI get better and better and when people managing the AI did not halt the learning, it became exponentially more stupid again. You need a lot of human intelligence to get good AI. The future of smart and beneficial AI is that the world no longer depends on cheap labour in sweat shops far away, in regions of political instability, and on long logistic transport routes.

I love reading Science Fiction, have for over sixty years. One of my top ten favorites introduced the AI concept, except so that society would accept the idea, they call it AS : Artificial Stupid. That way people could continue to feel superior to computers. Actually, in the book it was called the Artificial Stupid System, made the acronym more acceptable. Looking forward to less expensive solar panels! And Batteries.!

AI still can't do basic math or reliably correct a fucking text, it makes mistakes , it skips lines, it doesn't double check and appears so confident when it provides a wrong answer... Did the AI discover anything yet? 17% efficiency is bad and you'll never make it cheaper then the fucking Chinese. Even if you somehow manufacture 17% panels at 1/4 of the cost / W of a Chinese panel you're still going to fail because you will need twice the area, twice the number of panels, twice the number of frames, cables, fuses, connectors, diodes, glass, whatever and twice the installation cost which is the most expensive thing.
