AI in Movies is Bad for Hollywood

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are dominating the world, and they’re coming for Hollywood. But how does an AI tool generate new movies, TV shows, scripts, or artwork without stealing from existing work? Well…it doesn’t.
I consider AI to be a form of advanced plagiarism, and a bad thing for the creative people who make our favorite forms of entertainment like movies, music, books, and television shows.
What do you think the future of Hollywood looks like? It could be a scary few years without the proper regulations and laws in place…

I’m in agreement with you for the most part…maybe ay 98% in agreement. I do think the Beatles’ use of AI was acceptable for their song “Now And Then.” It was simply used as a tool to separate parts in a recording, so they could extract and use only the parts they wanted to go in the song. Nothing that wasn’t already there was added to the finalized recording. So when it’s used for those kinds of applications, I think it’s fair. But I do not support AI art itself. I wish Late Night With The Devil hadn’t used AI; it could set a dangerous precedent.

I can't cut the AI use for "Late Night With the Devil" a break because those were still images, it wouldn't have cost them much to just commission an artist online or something, and even though they say their art department touched up the images I have a very hard time taking their word for it when the images still look like crap, no artist worth their salt would look at those images and give them the OK. I just can't fathom why they would choose to use AI for an element of the film that can be created so cheaply and quickly already.

AI is a disgrace to creativity and hurts talented artists who want to tell their own story in movies and television shows! If it’s only used as a tool to cut costs in special effects or animation, I’m for that tool in that regard, but we need Hollywood to stop relying on AI technology, I want to see more creativity in art. It’s the same reason why hand drawn animation has more expression than a CGI motion capture, Disney animated classics verses their live action remakes.

AI isn't a disgrace, its just a powerful tool, you can debate all you want about the artistic morals and ethics, in the end even artists will have to content with the fact that they aren't exempt from this next revolution.. You will see AI entertainment whether you like it or not. If anything, artists and AI assistance can become a definition of a new defined artistry to keep human directive creativity at the forefront of AI generated content. If you can’t tell the difference, that’s sad and shows how bad current movies are. While I agree about the present state of machine learning creativity, saying that it can't in time "evolve" to be creative implies that anyone who as a child who creates derivative, uninspired art will only ever create such art. Another thing to keep in mind is that machine learning is presently the worst it'll ever be. It's only going to get smarter and more creative. In the process of making it more capable of coming up with novel yet effective cancer drugs, it'll become more capable of writing a creative yet touching movie script. Also, while photography reduced the need for portrait painters, and I could see human art becoming a niche thing, humans love humans and I don't see human generated art ever going away.

I just watched whatever was available with a tv that had a black and white color display with a dial knob to change the channels and messing around with the antenna with trying to get a good reception on tv with whatever I was watching tv. I got more into sit coms as I got older while growing up watching hip hop music videos in the 90s on mtv and beavis and butthead and even celebrity deathmatch lol. When I was not watching tv, I was playing video games like on the super nintendo or sega saturn. I mentioned these things because it's something I grew up that I got to enjoy and now ai will ruin everything to the point where almost everything will eventually be fake like the fake monopoly money board game but enhanced to look and seem real when in reality, it's just a virtual representation of what is happening in the real world. What's next, youtube videos will be turned into ai youtube videos with no one mention that ai will be involved because it's part of the terms and conditions because of force arbitration like what is already happening now with roku. Ai is the new buzzword similar how dolby atmos and dts when they first came out and similar to thx. Razer ruined thx with there marketing and plastered it on there products that have no real thx high audio fidelity in them just for the sake of making a quick buck and by cutting corners and doing whatever they could do to make a profit even when that means the quality has to suffer.

First of all, thank you for the video and the time you invest in your content. Overall, this paints a rather dystopian outlook on the future. As others have mentioned, humans also learn from other artists and remix it to create something "new." The AIs or rather trained models can do this much faster. For instance, they can combine concepts, elements, art styles and whatever that have never been seen before in an image, or heard in a song. The question then arises: what exactly does "creative" and "new" mean? Looking at big-budget productions from Hollywood (and other countries), it's clear that they are already creatively bankrupt. With all due respect, Disney and others have released some of the most generic films imaginable in the recent years. They could just as easily have been written by AI, if not better. And why should there be a "creative stagnancy"? Humanity will adapt to the new technology and create new things together. Many creatives can benefit from AI because they can now realize their ideas even with limited budgets. Unfortunately, there is a lot of low-effort AI stuff out there. When using AI, manual intervention should definitely be involved and be part of the workflow. AI is currently a tool that should be used to further increase quality, not to churn out content as quickly as possible. Quality always trumps quantity. For example, CGI can be used to achieve great effects that would otherwise be impossible, or studios may produce half-baked work under time pressure. Most big-budget movies just don't look like they cost over $100 million. Regulations are always a tricky issue. People always fear what is new and unknown. People had similar concerns during the Industrial Revolution. With advancing technology, jobs are always replaced. Instead of trying to regulate or even prohibit everything, governments should rethink and consider things like UBI and the like. Ultimately, we have to get used to the fact that Pandora's box has been opened. We can't get rid of AI anymore. And what do you mean by "it's not real"? What is real? Every idea, every thought has existed before. Every artist has been inspired by something; nothing arises in a vacuum. What if someday a great film, music, or a video game comes out, and only later it's revealed that it was 100% made by AI? The view of the critics is very human-centric. Who says we are so special, or "the pinnacle of evolution", and that machines cannot also be similarly creative someday? Or just... differently creative? Criticism is absolutely justified, no question. But demonizing the technology seems absurd and overblown. That's at least my view on the matter. It's perfectly okay to disagree with me. At best, I just want to provide some food for thought. Thanks for reading, and I wish everyone a nice day and lots of fun watching movies!

I agree with your take on current AI, which is not true intelligence and is incapable of creativity. Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI, will be a complely different situation when it arrives (which is potentially within a couple of years, depending on who you believe). AGI would be capable of actual intelligence and creativity, which raises many questions such as can it effectively emulate its own experiences to draw upon, like humans do with artistic endeavours? Can it produce something as compelling as a human can? Could it produce something better than a human? To outright deny that as a possibility is the epitome of human arrogance. I don't advocate one way or another yet because we don't yet understand what we'll soon be dealing with. For better or worse, AGI is on the horizon and that means change is coming. Big change.

I see it differently. A.I can be used to everyones advantage. It gives artists more tools and more power to create what they have in their heads. It gives normal consumers the power to create stuff they want. No longer do overpaid, woke screenwriters and directors in Hollywood have the power and monopoly to what we watch, now they have to compete with their own customers, which is a good thing. Do you think they would release Ghostbusters 2016, Captain Marvel/The Marvels, The Emoji Movie (Yes you may have forgotten about that movie but I haven't), Madame Web etc if customers had the power to create movies aswell? Those movies are so terrible, A.I would probably make a better movie in a minute. The same with some TV shows. I have seen so many fan edits, fan ideas and fan fiction that blows Hollywood out of the water. Just look at Asian cinema. You think Asians are afraid of A.I? They will probably use it to make more, better movies for 1% of the budget Hollywood uses. Embrace change and use it.

There's so many issues with "AI", the term itself being improperly used by Silicone Valley as an easy marketing method. It should be called AA for "Advanced Algorithms" or something similar. They are 100% dependent on a person to make them and all of the material online that they (illegally) scrape from - this isn't Artificial Intelligence that can think for itself. Just know if the Terminator becomes true, it didn't get there by itself - it can only do what it was programmed (by humans) to do.

"A machine doesn't have a soul so it can't possibly create a whole movie." It's true that the chances of AI producing a complete feature-length film that's convincing and compelling is next to none...but they key is that they undoubtedly will use it for various pieces of the process, well enough to create a movie with a much much smaller team much faster. Someone will just need to be in charge of bringing those pieces together then polishing them. Luckily, there will always be at least one or two studios like A24 around to stick to human creativity.

I do agree with you on the multiple devastating consequences this technology will likely have on society. However you seem to have a very simplistic way of thinking in holding AI accountable for the future surge of soulless content, which is unfortunately the vast majority of human made content we have witnessed more and more over the last decade. This is ultimately the real reason why Hollywood is likely to fall. Too much pointless content being made. Too much corruption, political propaganda and ultimately gatekeeping making it impossible for new talented creatives to break into the industry and make a living out of their art. The vast majority of people are sick of this. This is ultimately why there is going to be a huge divide in our society and why this technology will be welcomed by many who will see it as a tool to democratise creativity. Too many already hated Hollywood for what it represented. Now they have one more reason to hate it for the art and soul-deprived content it has been producing for over a decade. Another uber simplistic statement you make is the one on creativity. Try to define CREATIVITY before going off your tangent. What most real creative will tell you is that ART inspires ART besides your own personal experience of the world, filtered by our own unique lens and your own unique and personal artistic taste which will in turn inform our artistic style.

I want to argue a few points here. 1. You argue that AI isn’t creative. I ask, are humans? There’s a psychological question of whether or not humans have real ideas. Can you think of a new color? No, they all exist already. Every “original” idea is based on another idea, literally the EXACT same way that AI works. Sharknado is just jaws and natural disaster movies with a comedic spin. The mcu is just comic adaptations with slight changes. Is AI plagiarism? Absolutely. So is humanity. Ideas are meant to be shared and built on but ultimately every idea is stolen from some other idea. Same as AI 2. Yes it’s bad right now but so was the internet. All AI does is what the internet or Google did in its infancy where it wasn’t fully developed yet. It gathers information, combines it and shares it. It’s the same thing that societies have been doing for decades. Was it bad that Europe came together and formed a bunch of different ideas, stole them and slightly altered them to create whole cultures? Things like French cuisine is great but it’s taken and altered from things like Austrian cuisine or Italian cuisine (I believe, my history could be wrong but even as a what if, this works) 3. It’s a tool. Just like everything else. Do artists personally gather the materials and create the canvas, gathering the dyes to create paints? No not often. They go out and buy the tools and use them. Did animation die as soon as computers started doing animation or cgi? No there’s great creative use of it in many situations. What’s different from an artist no longer getting the wood for their brush, and an artist no longer individually making the strokes? The artist trades out the effort it takes for convenience. I don’t see any difference between this and an artist typing into chatGPT or something hey paint me a beautiful sunset using an orange color that fades into red, it can even use hex codes for colors. It’s creativity through description. It’s writing. Which is art in itself. The only difference is we aren’t used to it yet.

Chatbots and diffusion models as they currently stand ONLY interpolate between the data in their dataset. They dont reason or infer from limited context as humans do. When youre prompting for a concept car or weapon design or set design youre gonna be slot rolling between familiar looking aspects of ideas or existing products. Whereas for a concept artist from one image you can see the logic of how the bells and whistles contribute to whole or story tell on their own, instead of just hallucinations. You dont have "machine god" yet, but like every hype cycle big tech needs to fool everyone enough to fully invest so that the dealbreaker aspects are hidden untill youre too dependent on their ecosystem to do fuck all about it.

I absolutely agree 100%, the thought that AI could be seeping in any new form of film, music, or whatever is just scary to me. Obviously with any new technology, there's definitely benefits to AI if it's used right, but it genuinely concerns me when i see it replacing human artistry. It's lifeless and monotone, and no matter how much it advances I don't think it will ever replace the work of hard-working cinematographers, directors, and amazing writing from people who truly care. A machine that can spit out "pictures" that vaguely resembles something we recognise will never have the same feeling or connection genuine talent provides

There will never be anything that can prevent humans from creating art. People will lose paying jobs, which is not good, but nothing was ever going to stop that. AI is what the rich and the temporarily embarrassed millionaires of society have been waiting for. People threatened to replace people with robots for wanting a living wage. Now they're terrified cause the monster is too big and it might be coming for their livelihood next. Maybe we'll learn a lesson about prioritizing money over people or artistry.

@@JeffRauseo you know, "AI" is arguably a pretty broad and misused term. It can mean so many things. But whenever you watch a cleaned up bluray or 4k bluray you will pretty much always encounter some form of of "AI". All the tools they use to clean up film are arguably AI. AI is not necessarily good or bad. It's quite neutral. To be purist about it and say you don't want stories written or pictures produces by AI and only "handcrafted" is also very close minded. AI is inherently productive and can be a very creative tool especially when it comes to creating CGI or other productivity tasks like masking over damaged analogue film material. And it will only get better over time. For now we all hate a badly retouched True Lies or T2 4k bluray remaster because Cameron, like others, apparently chooses to overuse it. Disks like Godfather, LOTR and many other also have done it to make movies "appeal more to modern audiences" completely forgetting their roots and appreciation for source/original material which is super unfortunate and sad to me But that doesn't make AI bad. AI is neutral. It can be used well and can be used poorly. I would not be so apprehensive towards it but embrace it but be aware of its limitations and use cases
