Pikmin isn't depressing, the music is, and makes you depressed when you play, but the game is a very strategic adventurous game, and definitely, against every single game in history, my favourite ! :D (And that's not just to stick up for the game, PIKMIN is my most favourite game and nothing will ever change that.)

SuriOokami It's funny I just played Earthbound this year when a friend urged me to as it's his favorite game. Pikmin was one of my childhood favorites, now I'm replaying it on a nostalgia kick and I do see some similarities. P.S. you actually made me cry with this dub :') great work

Though Pikmin die along the way in Olimar's adventures... They have a mutual symbiotic relationship. Olimar cultivated the helpless Pikmin away from extinction, and showed them leadership and teamwork. If the Pikmin were more sentient, they wouldn't just see Olimar as a leader, but as the god that gave them life. And so, they helped him in return. If it weren't for the Pikmin, Olimar would've suffocated to death on the distant planet. This is why the first game is so significant, it's the origin and survival story of Olimar and the Pikmin. But the other games aren't that far off. Throughout them, the Pikmins' AI gets better and better. They confirmed that the Pikmins' flaws in Pikmin 1 such as plucking grass when you don't want them to were intentional. So, most of the improvements to AI throughout the games should be just as intentional; they're growing. They're evolving. And it wouldn't have been possible in the first place if it weren't for Olimar showing them leadership and teamwork. And think of the events of the other two games too, they're still significant... In Pikmin 2, some fans consider it greedy that the Pikmin are being enslaved for your personal gains... But think of the circumstances. The President, as revealed in his mail, was reduced to living with animals under a bridge because of loan sharks. If the debt remained unpaid-for, Olimar and Louie would've lost their jobs and suffered poverty. Once again, the Pikmin saved your life, albeit in a different way. And what did they get in return? To begin, when you discover the Onions, the Pikmin lived in small groups fending from themselves. This an improvement from the first game, where the Onions were discovered dormant with a single seed, showing the Pikmins' survival after the first game... But then at the end of Pikmin 2... As the ship takes off, you see the Pikmin light up everywhere... It's showing you that you helped them propagate into monumental - no, _continental_ - numbers. To think, it's Louie's fault that this sequel happens in the first place. But Olimar, Louie, and the President have caused more good than harm. And pretty much the same thing happens again in Pikmin 3. Throughout the game, you see the same thing, the Koppaites guide the Pikmin to carry, fight, and multiply. In the credits, the Pikmin once again dominate the planet, singing in harmony. But this time around, the stakes were much higher... In Pikmin 1 and 2, only a few lives hanged in the balance. But think of Pikmin 3... If the mission were to fail, billions of Koppaites would of starved. Thanks to the synergy of the intrepid explorers and the Pikmin, that didn't happen. Not to mention the game still begins with a crash landing. If it weren't for the Pikmin, the team would've never been reunited in the beginning. Brittany would've starved behind the crystal gate, and Charlie would've been digested. Even in Pikmin 2, on the first day, you needed their help to reunite Louie with Olimar and the ship. Even still, the story of the Pikmin isn't exactly slavery... They wouldn't exist and continue to propagate if it weren't for you're leadership, you loyal fan of all three games. And although Pikmin perish along the way, it's certainly not in vain, not just for helping the leaders in all three games, but also for fighting enemies to cultivate more Pikmin. That's just how life is, there will always be sacrifice for a greater cause. You see, when a tree is cut down, a new one can grow in its place... "But we promise we will never ask for your love in return..." But they didn't need to ask. In all three games, there's dialogue here and there that shows the protagonists being grateful for the help. If you choose listen to the dialogue before a day in Pikmin 3, the crew occasionally expresses gratitude for the help. Even in Pikmin 2, though the ship cared more about money, it did occasionally get excited about the Pikmin helping out. And especially Olimar... All throughout the first game, his notes are about how he depends so much on the Pikmin... And it's still there in Pikmin 2. In the Treasure Hoard, Olimar does occasionally note the effort the Pikmin gave to salvage the treasure. And the Pikmin are grateful that you gave them the gift of life. The fruit of life. The Pikmin games are symbolic of so many things, especially interdependence. It's a song of love. It's okay to feel guilty over individual Pikmin deaths... Olimar does too, especially as seen in Pikmin 1 at the end of the day, he mentions it if a lot of Pikmin died that day, and also expresses guilt if Pikmin were caught in bomb rock explosions. In Pikmin 3, the same thing can happen in the pre-landing dialogue, Charlie even tells the crew to have a moment of silence if a lot of Pikmin died the previous day. Okay, I guess Pikmin 2 doesn't have as much of the lovey dovey gratitude stuff, so I guess you could say Pikmin 3 went back to the roots of the series. Anyway, but if you look at the bigger picture of things... You don't have to feel guilty. They started from a single seed in the first game, and you raised the Pikmin into the dominant species of the planet by the end of Pikmin 3. Olimar misses his family, but... He cares so much about the Pikmin, and they care so much about him. He has another family away from home. This reminds me of one moment when my girlfriend got in a fight with a bully and i protected her, because i said some things like "leave her alone!" and then i said to my girlfriend "i wont ask for your love in return! JUST RUN!" so it makes me sad, because i came out of the fight bleeding

Olimar does care about the Pikmin. He only uses them because he can't accomplish his tasks without them. The company's debts weren't his fault either, nor did he even want to go back to the planet, he was thrown back in there with Louie. And he could've just stayed on hocotate after paying the debt, but went back to rescue Louie. If you read the piklopedia or the end of day logs, Olimar does love them back. If was as heartless as you say, then he wouldn't reflect on how bad he feels after having a bunch of Pikmin die, or feel he has a good bond with them in Pikmin 2, or almost feel sad for leaving them in the good ending of Pikmin, or enjoying their happiness and caring for their safety. He's not trying to get them killed, and if he does he feels bad for his negligence. Not to say that it's alright to use an endangered alien species to help fix a ship or pay a loan, but to say he is selfish and doesn't care about them and isn't thankful goes against his character.

He doesn't make them slave, they're trying to repay him. He just knows they'll help him so he allows them to help.
