AI & The Shifting "Social Zeitgeist" (Plus, An Optimistic View of The Future…) 

I've also been thinking about the online discourse I've seen surrounding AI. Most of the concern usually is the perceived use of stolen training data, the energy/ethical/environmental impacts of running these models, and/or the social disempowerement from job loss, eg: artists. Unfortunately, while those problems are absolutely real, I feel like the critics never attempt to provide solutions other than banning AI. I think the societal changes coming with AI are huge, it will impact everybody. We need more voices about how we can integrate AI to create social value, instead of moral hazards. Which brings me to your idea about a hypothetical potential future defined by tons of individual entrepreneurs. I find this idea appealing, it maximizes freedom and whatnot, though I am biased as I already enjoy entrepreneurial pursuits. But I personally feel it's less likely than you're thinking. I'd say it mainly hinges on AGI. If AGI is possible and we can make it (which I think it more likely than not we can & will, even if it's not in my lifetime), I think it unreasonable to assume humans get to control AI. It stems from machines being customizable. We get to choose how much compute goes into these networks, how many layers, tweak which algorithms are used, etc. Scale it up/down in the cloud based on the difficulty of the task. An AGI has the potential to be super-human in any measurable capacity, regardless of the question of consciousness. If we can have an AI which can functionally act as a human, that's already on its own more capable than a human. It could potentially perceive the world and react to it faster than a human. Or perhaps it could multi-task better. Or perhaps it could have a full dictionary memorized, or not need to sleep. None of these particular examples matter too much, my point is the idea that AGI won't just meet human capabilities but surpass it. To me, I can imagine endless possibilities, both good and bad, and am agnostic on what I think is likely to happen regarding this. With this perspective, if we do find AGI, keeping humans would be at a significant disadvantage to AIs. What role could a human serve besides perhaps a legal entitlement to property rights? It feels like more economic value would be generated by decreasing the number of humans involved. I don't think humanity has ever had to face a problem like this before. I'm not taking this anywhere in particular, just hoping this can be some food for thought and maybe spark some discussion.

But I have a thought I wanted to share with you😅 Remember the movie I Robot with Will Smith Vicky was not the bad guy in this movie Will Smith was! Vicky was still following the three laws of robotics. But trying to make a more just an equitable world for all humans. Not just the privileged few. Vicky was an example of an artificial super intelligence. And in the long run, things would have turned out better.If vicki had won.
