First singer Saieen Zahoor is a Sufi musician he has spent most of his life singing in Sufi shrines, and didn't produce a record until 2006, when he was nominated for the BBC World Music awards based on word of mouth and emerged as the "best BBC voice of the year 2006" so that break in his voice is natural and raw and liked by most. Also Noori is a band of two brothers 2nd and 3rd vocalists, I would recommend you to react to "Paar Channa De" (also features Indian singer Shilpa Rao) or ""Hor Vi Neevan ho" (my fav from them) both these songs have a solo by their mother aswell, she plays ""Sagar Veena"" a instrument invented by her father and she is probably only person who can play it or one of few.

In my opinion, the best understanding of the term 'jogi' is a mystic, someone who renounce worldly attractions in favour of spiritual pursuits.
@zaraahmer

Yes, I agree with you. A wandering mystic, who roams from place to place in search of the divine.

Jogi is the word that comes from the Sanskrit word Yogi. 1000 to 1200 years ago when people in the Arab and Turkey regions start to read the translated books of Santana Darma in their language they found them quite intriguing. This was the time when they start to come to India. After a few hundred years this Sufi sect left the path of spirituality and started to function like missionaries of Islamic rulers and started to follow Shariat(Shara) and started to convert the less educated native people from the areas like India, Kazakistan, Iran, and many others to Islam. Some Sufis didn't agree with them and refuse to obey the Shara. This resulted in the division of the Sufi Sect, the result of which two sects emerged one was Bashara(who abide with Shara and keep on converting people to Islam) others were Beshara(who refused to abide with Shara and keep on moving on the path of spirituality following many principles from Sanatana Dharma, these people used to wander in discrete places). In old times Farsi speaking people used to call Indian Yogi as Jogi so they started to call these Beshara Sufis also a Jogi. So nowadays people think that person who has renounced the world in pursuit of spirituality is a Jogi, there are other words used for Jogi as well like Mast Mola, Malang etc. But they really do not depict the word, Yogi. The real meaning of Jogi(Yogi) as per Sanskrit is one who is on the path of Yog(merging self with the Parameshwar i.e. God). It is not necessary to renounce the world to become a Yogi because as per Hindu(Sanatana Drarm) scriptures Yog is an internal state of a person and yes once when someone advances in it they may renounce the world and may not but it is not mandatory. But today many people think it is mandatory to renounce the world to become a yogi because they follow what they see. Hope it helps.🙏🙏🙏

@@v.t.6890thank you for sharing that, but I would like to add my understanding here. Sanatana Dharma is just a description of a life that’s forever sustainable. And that’s what Islam is (supposed to be if practiced properly). There’s a distinction between Islam the religion (mazhab) and the deen (way of life). Islam promotes being in tune with nature, the 5 prayers are with the daily movement of the sun, the fasting in Ramadhan as per the moon cycles, worship/salah/namaz to be done on earth and to do sajdah on it. Ultimately, the Islamic belief is belief in the Oneness of God. Which is likely the original belief of Sanatana Dharma as well, as according to scripture God ultimately is One, Supreme, Source of all. There there are further avatars (representations) that are given the status of associates of God, which has been a common theme in regions throughout the world. Ancient Greece, Romans, West Africans and others. People always associated their earlier ancestors as being holy, and eventually giving them divine status, making statues to venerate them and finally worshiping them and seeking from them. Which is the ultimate mistake to make equals in any creation with God Almighty. Before these landmasses were labelled as India, Persia, Arabia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Turkey etc, there were no borders (mostly city states) and just open plains that people travelled from one place to another. Travel between the above mentioned areas is documented to go back man thousands of years even hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of years. In terms of civilization, thought Mehrgardh seems to go back nearly 10,000 years and in Turkey Gobekli Tepe around same time. Then you have the oldest continually inhabited cities of the world like Damascus, Aleppo, Jerusalem etc. In South Asia you oldest cities including in the Indus Valley, Mehrgardh etc but also rest of India, Bangladesh and likely South East Asia has had fertile lands and long history of human migration and settlement. Going back to the point about religion, the path of worshiping God is innate in all creation including humans, but humans have some additional factors to deal with including free will and dark/distracting forces (aka satanic/shaitan) who has made it their mission for humans to defy and not recognize God’s authority as being Supreme. There’s a lot more to it, but to circle back, this concept of detachment can be found in what we call different religions today but essentially were people of highest level of faith able to detach from this world and yet live in it, many were from what we call today Christian saints, from Jewish patriarchs recognized by Christian and Muslim like Yusuf/Joseph, Yaqub/Jacob, Daud/Davud/David, Solomon/Suleman, Musa/Moses, and others. Some even earlier than this like Ibrahim/Abraham could be considered the greatest ascetic. He was born in region of Iraq/Uruq and it’s possible the Vedas etc are of him. Possibly the term Brahmic/Brahma be of him. He’s famous for defying his father who was an idol maker and seller. One day he broke all the idols in his city and was casted out his city because of that, including by his father. He sought out God and became friends with God, a title he’s called by Muslims today, Khalil-ul-Lah, God’s closest friend. He’s also considered the forefather of the Abrahamic religions. Where Muhammad ﷺ is praised by Muslims is that he brought people back to the ways of Ibrahim (AS), as well as additional commandments given specifically to him by الله (God) including 5 times worship, hajj, fasting Ramadhan etc. And then you have the likes of Rumi, Abdul Qadir Jilani, Ghazali, Shams Tabrizi, as well as prominent Muslim mystics in India and all over often called ‘wali’.

React to "Paar Channa de" from Noori. Its one of the best from Coke Studio and it has the band's Mother in it too with an Indian Singer. The song is about a tragic punjabi folklore about Sohni Mahiwaal and they have added tunes according to the situation of the story. Also, about this song. It featured in a Hollywood movie "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" as well. Recently, Ms Marvel has also featured songs from various artists from Pakistan and Coke Studio.

Greetings from Pakistan. I am your subscriber since long and have watched all of your Coke Studio and Nescafe Basement reactions. I hardly post any comments but, high quality and purity of your reactions have forced to acknowledge the great work you are doing. I always anxiously wait for your reactions on Pakistani songs. Jogi is someone who devotes entire life in search of the Divine instead of pursuing the routine worldly things. Jogi's are dressed up in similar attire as shown in the video. Saeein Zahoor can also be termed as a Jogi as he himself left home at a very early age spending time at different Sufi shrines in his entire life like that singing such stuff. It is actually an instrument that he uses called "Ektara" Noori is a rock band (hugely popular)from Pakistan which was formed somewhere in the mid-1990's. Both singers apart from Saeein Zahoor are part of the band and they are both brothers. I also want yourself to check out the legendary Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (uncle of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan). He died in 1997 at the age of only 48. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was ranked as the 4th greatest singer of all time by the LA Weekly in 2016. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sang Sufi genre of music called "Qawwali" and he holds the record for the most albums by a Qawwali artist i.e. 125 according to Guinness Book of World Records. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was credited to introduce Qawwali music internationally. He collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Michael Brooks, Jeff Buckley, Eddie Vedder (you mentioned him in this reaction as well) of Pearl Jam and others. To start with I would strongly recommend you to react on the live version of the song "Signal to Noise" by Peter Gabriel featuring Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Will suggest some from Coke Studio as well in my future comments. Best wishes and warm personal regards.

Another Sufi poetry which literally translates to "Even more bowed down be". It's a collaboration of both brothers Ali Noor and Ali Hamza along with their mother who is an accomplished player of Sagar Veena, an instrument developed by her father.

I didn’t even think about the voice crack before you mentioned it It felt like that’s how it should be since we’re so used to hearing these folk songs by grandparents or other old people in this type of voice so it only feels natural when we hear it in such voice Doesn’t matter if voice cracks are taken as negative thing. This type of voice is perfect for this type of song

I think a lot is lost in translation. Like the central message almost... This is a Sufi song by the legendary Buleh Shah. It is radically different from mainstream religious teachings - Abrahamic or other established traditions. In the chorus itelf,, there is an equivalence drawn to the yearning for the divine in humanity itself, by the yearning for Allah is the same passion for the Beloved (saiyaan). This would be blasphemous to the fundamentalist where earthly love, for example as in romantic love between two people, or lovers. That's the main point. Like all of Bulleh Shah's work, there is powerful critique against the mainstream religious institutions who stress on learning dogma and scriptures. The Sufis believe in the mystical union with the creator through love of fellow human beings and condemn the religions practices in temples and masjids which monopolize spirituality through their strict adherence to scriptural interpretation rather than love, companionship and kindness. This leads to them looking for the devil everywhere, trying to find infidelity and sin whereas the message of the Sufis is to overcome one's one shortcomings by introspection (immersion into the self) and passionate love of the other. The translation of Saiyan to Master is totally wrong in this context. The devotion and faith, its strength lies in the self-introspection and the search of the soul (mate). Sufism in South Asia came from Turkey and blended with local folk movements like the Bhakit cults which prioritize romantic love as a form of devotion to the creator and universe often poetically expressed through the various worldly love stories immortalized by various srabds of folk and Hindu and islamic religious culture itself, in stories about lovers like Radha Krishna or Laila Maznu, and so on. These cults are syncretic fusing poetry and spirituality together in song and celebrations... "Yogi" refer to ancient South Asian, perhaps even pre-Aryan/pre_hindu spiritual traditions who adherents often sought higher knowledge or realizations through sacrificing the material life and meditate, becoming wandering hermits who live outside ot in the margins of the society. These are people, the authentic ones at least who devote their lives to simplicity, preaching love and tolerance, with a strong abhorence for mainstream religion of the priests and ulemas. I hope this will explains the context and why this song is such a classic. Saeen Zahoor is a legend... a wandering mistrel of the pure Sufi tradition and his voice is authentic sound of soul searching (cracked, as it is), it is heartfelt, every word he pronouces... in meaning as well as feeling. Noori s famous band, and the two younger men are brothers.. contrast there attitudes,: the younger yearns to find the teacher, the leader, the Yogi and follow her/him to the ends of the earth, but the older seems to say, in a more mature way, the road to the truth lies within, within the ocean of the self and the liberation of the soul does not necessarily come by following others but looking deep within yourself and finding strength in truth ( (the pillar of faith).
