I am pretty sure a lot if not most of the techniques evolved from something more warlike than say kickboxing, boxing, Karate etc. Aikido techniques always seem geared toward multiple attackers. What does that tell ya? On a battlefield there are multiple attackers, never one vs one as in sports combat. Of course I am not speaking of modern warfare with guns.Think medieval times and it starts to make sense. You can see someone grabbing your wrist to keep you from getting your sword, spear,ax etc.

I don't understand why people think eastern martial arts, and specifically aikido, are fake. I have been practicing martial arts for 15 years and I have been in situation where I have had to use my training in a real street fight and came out on top. Just like any other fighting style, it's more about the fighter than the style. Saying one style can beat another just because is stupid. I am not a master of aikido, but I have integrated it into my personal style at it is very effective.

Aikido is made by O-Sensei not for fighting, but for purifying the mind. If someone want to fight, there are other matrial arts for training. But he can always multiply his martial art with aikido to find some harmony inside. O-Sensei was a master in serveral hard martial arts. So aikido don't suck, it purify the mind.

Aikido skills could be very useful as a self defense techniques for senior citizens. The one factor that all senior citizens have in their favor is surprise, their attackers always think the senior is defenseless. If these techniques were taught in a practical and useful way to seniors, their lives would be more physically secure. Unfortunately for seniors, it appears that the main emphasis of schools teaching these techniques, are directed to younger people. From what I have seen in these videos, I like this art very much and appreciate it's philosophy of self defense, restricted violence and not purposely attacking or injuring your assailant unless absolutely necessary for your survival. Thank you for posting this video!

In my opinion as new aikidoka you missed one important thing about aikido: it takes A LOT OF TIME (15 years, perhaps?) to start to be effective in aikido. So, if you teach the young, when they grow up, they'll be able to defend. If you teach that techniques to an elder man... Maybe he doesn't have enogh time get proficient ;) Some of my classmates have been studying aikido for 10 years and they feel like they don't know anything yet! heheh

+guitarrajuli A friend of mine became a black belt in Aikido and Japanese Jujitsu in 18 months and could whoop some ass with no problem. He was already a good street fighter, and he had his doubts with Aikido. But, he handled himself no problem. He learned both from the same guy down in Florida who was the highest rank in the US at the time. He laughed in the barroom bully's face before he destroyed them. It was fun to watch.

I saw a guy about 150 lbs bring a 280 lb guy to his knees by bending is fingers back the way they are not meant to bend. Aikido is more of a defense than an offense, so don't knock the techniques until you try them. You're only as strong as your bones and joints allow you to be.

Aikido is derived, in part, from Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu, a ruthless art. Lots of vids on RU-vid...Aikido is what came from the founder's desire to practice this art while not necessarily permanently maiming or killing anyone.

I like it's like the standing version of Jujitsu joint have certain pound pressure they can handle before they dislocate, only reason the students fall funny and look comical is so they won't get hurt and also have knowledge for further competitions I had a couple months training and one wrong move while getting trained can pop a joint easy that sht dangerous

Aikido seems to be an often misunderstood martial art. People see the athletes practicing and notice them flipping and rolling around, thinking that's what the moves are meant to accomplish - flip or roll your opponent. Truth is that all that flipping and rolling is done to prevent real damage like broken and snapped bones, dislocated joints, and trauma caused by ground impact. If you're not trained to respond to the movements fluidly, you get hurt really bad. Its definitely real and effective.

Boxing generally beats anybody who isn't capable of some form of boxing. It is, quite possibly, the most efficient form of unarmed fighting. Once you've got a handle on some realistic handwork, though, there are plenty of really mean things you can do to a pure boxer.

I appreciate your advice for bluePittbull to study a martial art. In my years of practice and study of Aikido, I have always regarded it as an art but not "martial". Martial means "warlike" or "combat". Any Aikido practitioner knows the philosophy is in contrast to warlike.

Keyword here is 'instructional'. You don't have to make uke do a breakfall when you're learning how to do a technique, or if you're teaching a technique, it's better that uke doesn't do a breakfall so that what you do with your hands and your body is clearly demonstrated to the class. When all the elements have been learned, uke will do a breakfall because it's either that or sustain serious pain or injury if they don't.

If you mean like a street fight then Aikido is amusing against multiple opponents. Watching them smash into each other by redirecting their attacks. It's actually funny. It's easy to demonstrate offensive martial art but it's not easy to demonstrate defense martial art without the attacker going all out. You're not totally wrong, Aikido doesn't work if the opponent does not attack.

You're right - not every move will do significant damage during practice. However, it is naive to think that it was not possible for the nage to inflict damage if desired. Further, not every technique is designed to injure the uke, sometimes just throw them off their balance or put them on the ground - where you can then pummel them if desired. Aikido isn't some ancient practical joke, but feel free to tell yourself whatever you want to make yourself feel vindicated.

A lot of arts have gone in a more spiritual/flexibility direction - especially Aikido. But, watch some videos by guys doing "Real Aikido" and see if you think they're pushovers Real Aikido retains the combat focus - once they grab you arm or leg, they throw you like a sack of potatos.

In my first glance of Aikido, I really think it was an act. How can someone get thrown this easily. So i joined a local university Aikido club. Now I really understand truly is the working of it. It is purely anatomy and physics. My sensei is an ex-muay thai fighter. So he really knows how to fight. Think of it. Why would a muay thai fighter accept Aikido (that you're saying is a useless art).

Aikido is like an application of the mathematical tangent line along a curve of a circle. In Aikido, one single attack can be taken by more than one hundred thousands of techniques. While practicing Aikido, one learns to master each single technique against a particular attack at one point in time. This is what is seen from outside when someone else is watch Aikido.

I remember taking my kids to learn Aikido and thought, Bologna! It's fake, they're falling on purpose, The instructor, invited me on to the mat, but I really had no desire to study the art. I've never looked for a fight, but had never backed down from one either. Anyway, the instructor asked how I would know if my kids were learning something effective, if I didn't know it worked. In short - I got an education! The Aikido instructor, I now call Sensei & Friend. And my ranking is Shodan ;)
