A beginner's guide to Aikido forward and backward rolls, or for those wanting to perfect their style for soft, controlled movement. The nearly 9-minute demonstration begins with easy rocking back and forth basics on the mat, and advances through a simple progression that can either start or finish standing upright. Tips include what to do and what not to do in order to have smooth rolls. Lynnworth encourages direct email communication through his webpage: artie.lynnworth.com/AVLbooks/A... where you can "contact" him, as well as see his various self-help books, including his fitness book that has several chapters on aikido rolls.

A great video. I recently started aikido and this is a great exercise. I am 6'5'' and my rolls were as smooth as a tumbling giraffe. After applying your routine to my workout, I find that my rolls are less impacting and more fluid. Thanks Sensei.

Brilliant! Thank you for making this. It's really helpful to see the step by step portions of ukemi, makes it a thousand times more approachable for a beginner (1 month of training and still no luck in mae ukemi). Ukemi not so scary after all : )

Thanks ChuckerThe1, I agree. Dobnovan Waite's RU-vid on rolls is excellent. I already had it in my own favorites and I'm glad you mentioned it for others. Whatever helps you to visualize and practice your soft rolls is good for development. Keep on practicing (including my suggested daily back toe touches and forward extension and leg split, tuck and turns, which can be done at home in a small space), Artie.

Practice at home will accelerate your ability to do smooth and soft rolls easily. You can do most of this practice in an area about the size of a beach towel. After seeing the whole video through, I'd suggest you focus on the section from 2:00 to 2:40 minutes to see the back roll toes to the back corners routine, and then also the section from 7:05 to 8:05 minutes for the front leg extension, knee tuck and stand up (which includes a full front to back and front routine from 7:25 to 7:40 minutes). Watch those sections over and over to remember the details and practice these every day at home (less than one minute of exercise, 10 per day = nearly 4,000 a year!). One alternative to putting your hands at your toes is to put them at your knee (this is explained in my book). If questions, please contact me through my website by email. Wishing you well, Artie.

Thanks for this excellent video. I am learning Shorinji Kempo, which has some similar techniques to Aikido, including the Ukemi. I think the instruction is excellent, but I just can't roll, and have even injured myself coming down hard. I used your video and within 10 minutes I was doing a nice backward roll from the right leg. I'm almost there on my left, though for some reason I end up going over my neck/head sometimes. Hi Daisy, good luck with your roll practice. As I describe in the video and also in my Fitness Book (available on Amazon as digital or soft cover), you can practice at home in addition to the dojo, in a small space to gain control of your body position. I welcome emails and have even done free coaching by Skype or FaceTime. I wish you well, Artie.

Hi Abnuga, thanks for your comment. Glad the video helped with your back roll control. The daily practice of the rocking back to each corner, touching your toe to the floor, will greatly improve your muscle-memory and positioning. A few minutes a day will add up to excellent form. Please contact me through my website if you want more detail. Happy to exchange emails with your specific questions. Wishing you well, Artie.

Hi Viet Phuong Nguyen, thank you for writing. You are not alone. Most beginners and even those who are more advanced in aikido find that rolls are one of the more difficult skills to master. Daily practice can make a big difference, so try to find an area to do the back toe touch and the forward split-legs, tuck and torso turn. Ten a day is over 3,500 practices per year. Please contact me on my website and I can share more tips with you. Good luck, Artie.

Fantastic explanation. This will surely help me. Do you have a recommendation for a mat to practice on? I have extremely limited space.
@Artie2011
@Artie2011 3 месяца назад
Hi @bjb0808, thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed the explanation. For the basic rocking on your back, just a plain carpeted floor or runner can work. For the actual rolls, you can search the internet for exercise mat sections, and you'll find many options for pieces you can put together to fit your limited space. If you have a garage, that's another option where you can order a full folding mat to use while your car is out of the garage. For more detail on rolls, check my fitness book that has a whole section on aikido rolls (Note: royalties go to charity; I don't push book sales to generate income, I just like to help people meet their full potential). Good luck with your practice. Thx a ton, great video! Just one question, about the position of the back foot in medium backward roll: I was intuitively keeping it like you're showing, with toes supporting the foot, it not being flat on the ground. However, my trainer said that can lead to a strain, if sth goes sideways, so it's better to keep it flat on the ground. So I learned that and no probs, but would care to know what's your take on that?

Hi Leva J., thanks for your note. Sorry for slow reply (was traveling). Please contact me through my website email, so I can add more detail. Here are a few quick comments: 1. Always follow your sensei's advice, 2. If what you're doing works, you can stick with it, however, 3. I always recommend positioning the foot to allow your toes to safely get under your foot and support your body weight, rather than use your instep (top of foot) to support your body weight, which can also cause ankle or foot injury if not done well. Let's exchange more Q&A through email. Wishing you well, Artie

Dear Syrizis Syrizaios, congratulations on starting aikido. I wish you well and hope you will keep safe without injury. Be sure you are getting good support on your front arm so you don't crash to your shoulder. Your arm should be like a wheel (the unbendable arm), shifting your support from hand to elbow to shoulder to back, not from hand to shoulder. Study the video and please contact me through my website. We can also try to do a Skype training session together if you like. Good luck, Artie.

@@Artie2011 Thank you for your reply Artie, you're a gent. I'm writing from rural England, I'm 72 years old, spent my life working with horses and always employed the no stick nor spur technique with them, I wish I'd known about Aikido when I was 20! I've read a lot about Ki and the Dao, both of which, if I understand correctly, form the basis of Aikido and most lovely they are to read and follow too, as indeed is Aikido. It's excellent for co-ordination, which is the point of my interest in it, that and quickness of mind. The movements are very elegant too, liberating to use. Your videos are a great help, thank you.

@@jerebuck Thanks for your followup added detail. I am 74 now, and every morning as part of my exercise routine I do my back rocking to the corners. I love how it makes my back feel, and it's good for core strength. I include this in my book, "Get Fit and Stay Fit for Life." You can find that on Amazon (all my royalties go to Charity, so I'm not pushing the book for sales income; I just like to share tips for success). Good luck with your practice and development. Artie.

@@Artie2011 Thank you Artie, I have found you on the net, such a delight to come across someone who has led such a rich, varied and accomplished life. I'll get your book. I have a few on the net too, though I write about horses. The one that sells well is The Byerley Turk, which is the story of the first thoroughbred who was a spoil of war from the Siege of Buda in 1686. I did a lot of research on it, it was wonderful, although hard to do.

Hi xxHockeyMonke92xx, I am sure many who read your comment will have the same feelings! Also, it helps to put a folded blanket, sleeping bag or bedspread on the wood floor, especially when first learning to roll. Begin with rocking and the back toe touches and eventually you gain muscle memory for fluid and soft movements. For forward rolls, be sure to support well with the front arm. Contact me through my website and we can exchange emails and tips further. Wishing you well, Artie.
