Thank you, Sensei! We go through all this in our club, and I perform these techniques. At the same time, the exam does not require repeating, but performing at least 6 kokyu naga techniques on your own. Your video is a good guide in this!

Aikido videos always get comments from some arrogant ignorant souls who judge it without ever having experienced it. And also without any conception of the history, development, why and how of Aikido. All I can say is, take a few lessons with a good teacher, you might find you love it and turn into an Aikidoist. For those who don't find it violent or "effective" enough, just know that many Aikidoists started with other arts and found this was the one they liked best. I started with TaeKwonDo and a little Judo but even though I loved those, as soon as I encountered Aikido I knew that was for me. And, it's as challenging as you allow it to be, believe me!

I agree..... there're those on this channel unfortunately, who don't share the same sentiment!

You don't really need to ask them to attend aikido. Just give them simple question, "do you really want to go full hugging or ground fighting when weapon involved?" Then tell them that aikido is 'armed-grappling' martial art. After that question them again which aikido technique is useless in that scenario. It's not mean to be unarmed fighting art.

This technique seems to work very well for this particular application. Now: having been in numerous street fights over the years I have never seen anyone grab by the wrist like this. I got grabbed by the clothing close to my elbow, one-and-two handed grab by the lapel(s), experienced head-lock and punches to the face. All those aikido techniques being shown focus on a wrist grab which - most probably - will never happen in reality. A few months ago a guy in the street grabbed me by my sleeve, next to the elbow ( real-life grab ). Just like it was at a dojo: Kokutsu-dachi pulling my elbow and him close to me, step forward to a fighting stance with a punch to the upper chest - the guy goes down clutching his chest close to the throat. The problem solved in about 2 seconds. Karate works in real life - I tested it. Now: Think about it: nobody grabs by the wrist and tries to punch to the face! But.. someone can grab you by the lapel then will try to punch you to the face. This one is reality. What will you do? Why don't you show how ( and if ) aikido works against real-life situations like the ones listed above. I practiced judo and kyokushin for years and using them I solved many street situations very efficiently and fast. Therefore I know they work. Aikido? I do not know, I have not seen a defense against a real-life situation yet.
@StefanStenudd

AdSesame, did you watch the whole video? I show kokyunage against several types of attack, not just wrist grabs.
@AdSesamecom
@AdSesamecom 6 лет назад
Now I watched till the end. You have a two-handed grab by the arms from outside. It can - sometimes - happen. Often? Nope! Another grab of the left arm from outside using... left arm. Wtf??? It is for the first time in my life I've seen someone grab another person like this. When will it happen again? In the street you'll be grabbed by 1 or 2 lapels, the attacker's arm (s) tight, as if trying to lift you, he can also grab you by an arm at the elbow hight or higher, will try to punch to the face... These are the situations you will face. SHOW DEFENSES against these that actually work and you will be credible. I will be the first one to sign up for aikido classes. Are you confident you, yourself, can engage a crazed punk in a street in a real fight and win? Let me quote the Kyokushin founder Mas Oyama: "There can be no proof without real fighting. Without proof there is no trust. Without trust there is no respect. This is the definition in the world of martial arts." It looks like what you're doing is practicing defenses against theoretical grabs. Do those defenses work? 100% yes! Will those theoretical - usually wrist - grabs ever happen in your life? No. Now: read Mas Oyama's quote again. Thank you!
@StefanStenudd

AdSesame.com, thanks for watching the video to the end this time. Several attack forms practiced in aikido are traditional, from the days of the samurai. They made sense to them - for example, grabbing the wrist to stop the other one from drawing his sword, or simply as a first move to prevent the defender from blocking a strike. We do a lot of wrist grabs in aikido also because they are good for learning the aikido techniques and improving them. Just like kyokushin karatedo, aikido is not practiced with the sole purpose of self-defense in the streets. If that's your only reason for training, you probably would not enjoy aikido.
@AdSesamecom
@AdSesamecom 6 лет назад
Stefan, I am a couple of decades past the stage of self-defence. I tested these 2 arts many times on the street, even beat up successfully a couple of cops, too... I'm good and confident the Kyokushin karate and judo work very well in real life. Because I have employed and seen it myself. I know how it works on someone because I was hurt a lot, had my lower ribs cracked, got knocked down a great many times so I know what pain is and now I know how to inflict this kind of pain and incapacitate. Karate is a state of mind - you can practice it into the infinity and always get better. But.. every technique in karate is useful and this very fact motivates me to make it better. It makes sense to me to learn and improve things that are useful. I cannot find any sense in learning techniques that do not happen in real life. Yes, I'm referring to those ill-fated wrist grabs. Please, show techniques that make practical sense since you consider aikido a martial art! In plain language: just show techniques other than responses to a wrist grab. Thanks!

What about 13:23? Your grip is broken, you have no more contact whatsoever with your uke and yet... he gets thrown through the air without you touching him. Check it out frame by frame - I did. Please, remember - I did practice judo for 3 years, 5 days a week, 2 hours per day. I do know how throws work. ???
@StefanStenudd
@StefanStenudd 6 лет назад
AdSesame.com, that's why I continued the arm movement to sweep his leg. But of course, that's not ideal, and that's the resaon this sequence is in the "extra" at the end of the video. It's about the flow and rhythm of kokyunage, and working on doing it in a relaxed way. That's why I don't grab uke's wrist, although it is possible and would safeguard against losing contact.

Hello, sorry its me again....the attacker can punch you in the face many times!?
@StefanStenudd
@StefanStenudd 6 лет назад
Funnybunnystecher, in gotai, from a static starting position, of course a punch is possible before the technique starts. In jutai, with the movement starting before the attacker reaches, it's quite different. Notice also that every technique starts with taisabaki, moving out of line of the attack.

@Makinja
@Makinja 6 лет назад
It's a training drill. If uke let's go nage can switch off to a different technique in a real situation. It's more about blending, go with the flow. what uke gives determines what will happen next.
@martok2810
@martok2810 6 лет назад
if uke lets go, he receives the whole hit..... uke holds and keeps it close to minimize dmg and rolls when the joint locks......

AdSesame.com, don't jump to conclusions. I have not chosen not to publish any comments of yours. Where did you make that comment - here at the kokyunage video or elsewhere? Sometimes RU-vid demands my approval before publishing comments RU-vid suspects to be spam, probably also if they contain very bad language, but I can't find any such withheld comment - from you or anyone else - at my RU-vid channel now.

Context is king. Aikido is armed-grappling martial art, not unarmed striking/grappling art. It's sole mindset is: 1. What if the opponent is stronger than me? 2. What if one of us or both of us is armed? 3. What if the opponent have friend somewhere waiting for me to do a submission hold to the opponent in front of me? In this kokyunage, it's demonstrated as if we are armed and the opponent holding our wrist hoping we can't stab them. In this scenario of course you won't do full hugging or full ground fighting when there's weapon involved right? I hope you understand and can review the rest of the video yourself. Go to ChuShinTani channel for more detail on what purpose aikido technique for.
