If I didn't know better, I would have sworn that both Anthony Hopkins and Javier Bardem emulated Rutger Hauer's performance in the Hitcher for their roles as Hannibal Lecter in Silence of The Lambs and Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men respectively.
firstpower100 yes, I believe they matched his performance, however, I don't think they surpassed it. All three roles feel so real and committed to. Anthony Hopkins and Rutger Hauer r actually my favourite actors lol

Yeah I was a huge Rutger Hauer fan since Blade Runner and this is one of my favorites of his other works. This is the movie that made me fall in love with Jennifer Jason Leigh, unlike most people who discovered her in Fast Times. By the way, avoid the remake, as it's not anywhere near as good.
What happened to the sequel to "The Hitcher" a film called "The Kid" starring C. Thomas Howell as the killer? If I remeber it was either unmade or it was labelled as a video nasty because of the extreme content.
