I'm beyond excited!!! I can't even express my excitement in this comments section. I was so crushed when ACA retired all of their 767s when COVID hit, so I really hope that they bring a few back, even if it's just for cargo operations. Thanks for informing us!

Interesting proposition. Personally, I would love to see these tried and true work-horses still flying; have long been a fan of the 767. However, as noted, always contentious when negotiating (lower) wages with trained, competent pilots. AC pilots really are a classy bunch; always professional and friendly. I've always considered them to be a positive element of the Air Canada brand. Alex, please continue following this story. Thx! Rgds from West Kelowna, BC.

Should be worth mentioning that they leased a few aircraft from World Cargo in the mid 2000's, and also had 2 77F orders with their original order but canceled those orders. We will see if this works though. This would've been a better announcement last year since the aircraft probably would've been converted when the first wave of covid hit. These things take them and I feel like by time they actually get up and running, the deman for cargo created by the virus will be less or nonexistent if things drastically improve

Great idea! I am super drawn to the 767. I fly Delta mainly and have been on many 767s. 767 is only common in North America and Japan, so many people have little experience with them. They are truly a versatile, cozy but under-appreciated aircraft. It's good to bring them back as freighters.

The 767 we flew on back in May 2019, did get a conversion surprisingly. I think it is one that went to Cargojet....31 years at the time. Though it was an early cf6-80 so quite efficient when introduced. Mostly higher hour and low cycle..
@jfmezei
@jfmezei 3 года назад
Cargo conversion also involves removing heavy windows and plugging hole with light aluminium. Not sure if floor strenghtening or cutting fuselage for cargo door is the bigger ticket item. Air Canada, unlike Fed Ex, UPS, lacks distribution on the ground. So it is harder for it to get business. However, during the pandemic, becaiuse of shrtage of cargo capacity due to lack of passenger flights, there are many opportunities. But once line retirns to normal in a year or so, once has to wonder if Air Canada can be competitive in the cargo business when lots of capacity torusn and prices drop.
@gmitchellfamily
@gmitchellfamily 3 года назад
Things will never be completely the same post-COVID. E-commerce got a serious boost but it was already on the way up. Air Canada wouldn't jump into this feet-first unless they'd done their due diligence and market analysis. On top of that, air freight was already growing steadily even pre-COVID, it's the only reason the 747 and 767 production lines kept going.
@randygalati

There are plenty of cargo airlines that don’t have a dedicated ground service and they were doing completely fine before the pandemic. Air Canada never operated in a time of online shopping in such a demand. I’m sure they will do great with a hand full of cargo 67’s if they play their contracts right.
@jfmezei
@jfmezei 3 года назад
@@randygalati If I order something from a shop in Vancouver, they aren't going to go to YVR and deal with AC Cargo to ship it, and I am not goiung to DOrval Airport to picjk it up. Gets works if you order from USA where you have to clear customs yourself or hire a broker to do it for you. Air Canada may help Amazon bulk ship to its distribution centres. But otherwise lack of distribution beyond airport doesn't make AC suddently a winner in e-commerce. If AC does well, it isn't because of e-ommece but because of drop in overall air cargo capacity. (demand > supply).

Would love to see these at Pearson, I work in midfield right beside Air Canada Cargo so if this were happen I would see them all the time. Cutting cargo doors and using ULD's (containers) is vastly more efficient than hand bombing freight through small passenger doors on de-passengered aircraft. If AC didn't go this route, and sold the airframes, they would be snapped up by the large cargo operators, (the (767 freighter is still in production and still in high demand!) The air cargo demand is growing......if AC doesn't grab some of it, someone else will

In order to benefit from the pharma industry's needs, please keep in mind that it's not just a matter of cargo capacity. Having the right sort of temperature controlled containers in sufficient quantity is the real bottleneck. At least 1 type of vaccine needs to be transported at -70° Celcius. Yes, containers do exist that can keep this temperature for up to 10 days, but they require large amounts of dry ice, of which there is also a shortage. So, don't focus on the vaccines, because they're not going to fly in large quantities in the first half of next year. The nasal spray, which can be transported by sea, has far better chances of becoming the n° 1 solution. I'm sure Air Canada does not convert planes because of the pharma industry, but indeed because of growing e-commerce. It's a very safe bet. Also, equipping the planes with large cargo doors opens up an entirely new market. It would allow my mother-in-law to fly.

Makes good sense to keep those old airframes flying. I’ll miss the 767 as I always thought the 2-3-2 economy layout was pretty roomy (although silly from a business standpoint; lots of empty space in that plane). I hope they make decent money with freight operations if anything to subsidize the continuation of passenger flights to less profitable small markets.

If you can't fly people fly goods. Wheels up brings in revenue. Moth balling them in the desert isn't any better. May as well get the saws all out cut a big hole on the side and stick on a door with red duct tape. This way the lift operator sees the periphery of the hole and doesn't slam the cargo into the aircraft.
