Hi Tamsen, Huge fan of the channel. I picked up a rough SV650 last weekend and am in the process of bringing it back to life. Its a huge learning curve for me and your videos have been invaluable. Even if I didn't own a SV I think I would have watched them all anyway as there is so much useful information in there. Using your videos I checked the plugs and even removed and cleaned the carbs. When I put it all back together it fired right up and is running much smoother. Still got a long way to go, but I really feel like I am on the right path, and its been hugely satisfying and its done wonders for me. Thanks again Chris

Thank you so much! I read how to do it in my service manual, but it is good to see in real world. :) I'll do it tomorrow with my sv650n. It's from 2008 but as I see except the airfilter's shape it is the same process.

I agree, sometimes just watching someone do it brings the manual to life a bit! I am really pleased you have enjoyed the videos!

Great job, Tamsen! One thing you might have mentioned, something many people might not know, is where the fuel tank prop rod is stored on the bike.

Cagiva may have used the same engine on the Raptor but lifting the tank on the Suzuki is so much easier than the Cagiva...I guess the Italian designers didn't think it through very well...The box is slightly different to...once again the Suzuki looks like it comes out on top. :)

Tamsen! I love your videos! Where other youtubers might make a 20 minute video for stuff like this, yours are short, clear, and concise. I've owned my SV650 for 10 years, but I've never done anything on it myself. That's changed with the Corona isolation. I bought the Haynes manual, the basic tools, and I'm now going through every maintenance procedure myself (except fitting new tyres, which I had done today for the first time ever *shudder*). The Haynes manual is a great starting point, but your videos are a brilliant addition, both for clearing up confusions in the Haynes images, and for added confidence. I feel so proud of myself, and that is in no small part thanks to you :)

Hey Jophiel, thank you so much for taking the time to drop me a message. I am so pleased you are enjoying the videos and they have been helpful to you. This is exactly why I set up my channel in the first place, to share what I learn (including mistakes, there have been a few!!) and help others in the same way, your great comment has made my week, thank you.

@@TamsenCooper And you have made mine! I am wondering how you kept your bike so fresh all these years! It is remarkably shiny and I would have thought it a new bike if not for the clearly-2002 frame. In comparison, mine looks like a slab of mud with an engine installed :P
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 4 года назад
Well it started off in a really rough state, I don’t know if you have watched my intro video (the very first one I made), but I had a really bad motorbike accident, my injuries were so bad, I couldn’t even sit on a bike without extreme pain. Well I got a replacement bike, same model, colour and year, but the guy had let it sit outside and it was a right state. I slowly stripped it back to a frame with an engine, got as much as I could remove powder coated, and slowly worked around the bike restoring it, learning how to as I went. I made some mistakes (see ‘funny female mechanic moment’) and asked for help (‘stuck pistons in calliper’) and slowly turned it into the bike it is today. Now she lives in a garage with premium fuel and doesn’t miss a beat! I have not done a video in a while, so I am really keen to make a few more, next ones to involve 3D printing motorbike parts and ultrasonic cleaning! I hope you will like those too!
@jophielwiis
@jophielwiis 4 года назад
@@TamsenCooper That's so cool! Did you have any experience beforehand? I have never heard of powder coating before (2nd language). Is it the 'paint job' on the engine? Mine is pretty badly chipped and I'd love to get that nice and fresh again, but I'm not sure I'm confident enough to take apart the bike. And since I'm doing all of my work on the street it'll probably have to wait until I have some sort of gararge available :P Please do make more!!! I would love to see something like "how to completely disassemble the break system" or "how to replace wheel bearings" and stuff like that. Your 4000-mile playlist is already a godsend though :D
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 4 года назад
No knowledge before I started, gaining a bit with every job I do! As it happens, both those videos you suggested exist, I did one on changing out the wheel bearings (without special tools) and have taken apart the callipers into tiny pieces for a full rebuild. (One video on front, another on rear) Powder coating is where you take the metal part to a place that specialises in it, the paint is like a powder, and then it is baked on and gives an incredible finish, it shouldn’t be super expensive either, just be prepared to be without your part for at least a week!

Hi Tamsin, I have a 1999 sv650s with only 3000 miles, on mine the first time I did a service I noticed I got an inline fuel filter, looking at yours and there doesn't seem to be one, did they have one when the came off the production line. The reason I ask is this bike has been stood still for 10 plus years, and I've got popping on idle and overrun from thee exhaust, found thee exhaust had 3 holes so put a new full system on it, popping is getting worse, she doesn't idle properly, would you say the carbs needs balancing or would they benefit from a rebuild. Kind regards Martin

Best place to buy replacement parts for the bike? Obviously the local dealership would be over priced. Rock Auto is for cars. What's for bikes?
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 6 лет назад
Online is good, but of course that means waiting for it! The watch out is some of the imported stuff, some of it is perfectly fine, but certain items, seals for etc. You don’t want to cut corners on. So places like Robinson’s foundry, weemoto, m&p are all places I have used. Hope this helps!

Amazing videos you're doing Tamsen! But when i removed the air filter and looked at the bottom i found a small amount of oil. Should i be concerned or is it normal? i just cleaned up the small amount with a towel and keept on driving ("\(o.o)/")
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 8 лет назад
Thank you, a small amount of residue is ok, I did the same and mopped it up with a paper towel. A good idea is to check it again after about a week, if there is loads of fluid then something is wrong, if not then you should be all good.

hello. How can i understand if i need to change the air filter? I am not shure if the previous owner did it before selling. It does not look like a brand new one. But it is still ok)
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 7 лет назад
It is a good question. The air filter needs to be renewed if it looks dirty or clogged. If it is a standard paper one, it is usually too difficult to clean and cheap to replace. I once heard someone describe the air filter like 'the bikes lungs' it draws air in, mixes it with fuel and ignites, well if they are clogged up they will not do a good job, and seeing as they are not very expensive, it can be a quick win to improve performance.

Ce n'est pas bon, l'air rentre par l'intérieur du filtre donc il est normal que l'extérieur soit toujours propre . J'ai fait la même erreur, je pensais qu'il était presque neuf alors qu'il était très sale à l'intérieur !
