Yes Gary is a fabulous engineer and the most reliable and efficient person too!! we have been working along side each other for about 20 years and the knowledge the he has passed on to me has been awesome, my late father was an amazing plumber so I feel that I have him back with me!! (albeit Gary is a lot younger than my Dad!)

Hi robin love the work you do you are a true craftsman. I myself love my tools and believe in having the right tool for the job. Throughout all your videos it’s hard not to notice you always have the right tool for the job. I hope I’m not just speaking for myself but would love to see a detailed tool tour, a walk through all your tools everything you have gathered over the years. All power tools and hand tools. Would be amazing to see your collection. Keep up the incredible work.

We have them down here in OZ, mainly as reverse cycle air-con units, cold air in summer, warm air in winter, They are now being used as water heaters fitted directly to an external hot water cylinder for domestic hot water as an easier install than the usual roof mounted solar hot water system. Builders down here don`t realise insulation works both ways and only build to "Australian Standards" which is an oxymoron ! I`ve loved watching this build Robin, cheers mate .

Great video. Problem I think people will find is the same when people get underfloor heating for the 1st time.. I'm going back all the time as they tell me its not working... after a few visits I realise they are turning the underfloor heating on for 30 minutes when they wake up then turn it back off and wonder why it's not hot.. and then think I'm talking bollox to them when I tell them it doesn't work like that and needs to be on longer or left at a set temp...
@Trevor_Austin
@Trevor_Austin 2 года назад
Spot on. Teaching women about thermal inertia is like trying teach algebra to a cat. Our floor takes about 2 hours to warm up and even then I have to interfere. Because after you get them past that hurdle, you have the thermostatic control problem. My wife thinks that if you turn up the temperature it will heat up quicker. She complains it’s too hot. Doh….
@TheDoosh79
@TheDoosh79 2 года назад
@@Trevor_Austin Same with the hot water cylinder, they think the boiler is firing and "wasting gas" even though the water is up to temp and shut off on the stat, just because the light on the timer is still lit they think it is on!

Almost new build? Robin, you are hopelessly out of touch. Modern builders now are barely able to leave a new house before it falls apart, let alone fit a window or properly install insulation. This build however is comparatively a work of art, even down to the pipework in the boiler room. The care that you and your team have put into every aspect of this build means that it will be thermally efficient and that it will be relatively cheap to keep warm and cosy. As a country I truly believe that we will never be able to build thermally efficient houses because the major house builders incorrectly reward the brick jugglers, wood butchers and poopsmiths who bodge for them. They are rewarded only for speed, not precision, appearance or even sticking to the plans. A win for them is if they can get paid. A win for you is when you are satisfied that your work is as good as it can be.

Thank you Trevor, I appreciate the general standard is pretty poor!!! and that is a shame as most tradespeople I know would love to be able to spend more time on a job and do it well, but generally the developers give bad rates for tasks and this means the guys can only earn a half decent wage if they tear through the work!! Hopefully we can demonstrate the alternative!!

@@ukconstruction I'd partly agree Robin in regard to those subcontracting from developers, but a lot of builders are still in and out merchants. They'll quote you for 5 days work then go like a train to finish it in 3. But do they reduce the cost by 2 days? Not on your life! They still want the 5 days fee! Two examples of my answer to them. 1. I priced the retail cost of materials to re-felt a single garage roof, £400. Roofer quoted £1400 so i asked how long it would take. A day he replied. I replied bye, no way am i paying £1000 for a days work! (Well i might for a life saving surgeon but not for torching felt!) 2. Quote for a patterned concrete drive £6500. How long will it take 4 days. Held his hand out in 3 days so i told him to reduce the cost by the day he hadnt worked! (Or take his concrete away!) No problem with craftsmanship. No problem paying for it. But i refuse to be ripped off by bodge it and scarper the mastic men!

@@ukconstruction I truly hope alternative, fairer rates and methods for rewarding tradesmen can be found. I see no reason why they should not be earning the same as accountants, lawyers and any other skilled technicians. Possibly the biggest problem is to fill the void between the useless dross on the bottom and the skilled artisans (if that is not a too pretentious term). The viewers of this channel have all seen your colleague Ed. He’s starting in the Premier League. I’m also pretty sure the majority of the contractors you work with are all at the top of their game. But how do we fill the gap? College is probably not the answer. When you have 12 trainees booked for an exam, six pitch up 20 minutes late and of those only two pass - and they haven’t even got on site yet. So part of the solution has to be the trades themselves. It should be for them to determine who can and cannot enter and call themselves qualified. Then it’s to sell the benefits of having a qualified professional who is fully insured, knows his limits who in return expects a fair reward. The trades combined then have to start selling tradespeople, not as the cheeky-chappy singing idiots in adverts but as artisans. The public’s perception of them has to change. I say that because I had a nice chat with my builder the other day when we met shopping. His building process was measure, measure, measure and then carefully cut. His work is millimetre accurate on diagonals. He wasn’t cheap but what a lovely job, one I didn’t object paying for.

@@Trevor_Austin I really like this comment Trevor, you clearly sum up the issues facing us in the industry!! I do hope in my lifetime that we can get the whole craft and building standards back to a better paced and paid career but I suspect the market is so huge and unregulated... anyone can call themselves a builder!! I am trying to highlight what should happen, how much it should cost etc but carefully as I do not want to hurt anyones lively hood as they may not have the skills or tools to set themselves up to manage expectations or sell themselves properly for what their worth!! it will take time!!

@@gbwildlifeuk8269 we recently had a builder in to raise a lintel and reduce an opening to fit a smaller door . He told us how long it would take and what he was charging per day plus materials. When he submitted the bill for the work it came up far shorter than we were quoted/expecting . Wife asked him why. He replied in the end I didn't do 4 full days labour and when I'm working down in Devon I like to start later in the day (930 start most days) if I can, he does lot of work in London. So at least he was honest. Also laboured alongside him but didn't expect a reduction in the the bill. The added bonus he has given me plenty of tips on relaying the patio and lent me a disc cutter for the job. Sometimes it can be hard to find the right one.

Be very interested to hear your thoughts after the first 12 months. I have fitted a heat pump to a renovation project and used a retro-fit UFH solution, so don't get the benefits of a thermal mass poured floor slab. Insulated as best as I could given the original structure. But originally had LPG as we are off-grid and the savings have been pretty good. Total 12 month bill was what I use to pay just for LPG (pre the price hikes)

Super neat job as is everything you do. No doubt a lot of thought and effort gone into getting it right. Effectively a brand new build with all the right protocols. Should be as efficient as it can be. Lots of things not to like about heat pumps though. They run constantly to be the most effective as they say. The fabric of your building at the optimum temperature of 21C. Would I want that. Not really. When I had a gas combi boiler and my standard thermostatic rads I ran all the rooms at different temps. The bedroom I like to be like a fridge. Never even turned the rad on. You have zones on that underfloor heating and some app to play with but it sounds like the system has a lot of inbuilt control by computer. We get numerous power cuts. I bet that would cause it to screw up. I had a heat pump hot water system. It didn't like lightning. Our mad electrical storms take out all sorts. Surge protectors or not. Was extremely noisy but fairly efficient until it died just out of warranty. If one of these systems is going to work properly then this install may be it. Doesn't have the same charm though of all sitting around an open fire in the winter cooking toast on a fork and chestnuts on the coal shovel. Baxi boiler bubbling away in the background heating all your water. Heat, Utilities and Food. Beat that with a heat pump.

Hi John, this is a wall board with a hard laminate that looks like marble, we always line our service areas with a finished board, you can clean all pencil marks from it and its is cleanable and finished, it also provides excellent fixing for the heating engineer and the electrician

Not entirely convinced that it is easy for the end user to control. Point taken on new builds re: heating efficiency, professionally installed, annual service etc. but on very old, small, mid- terraced properties with por insulation, It's a non starter. Particularly if the "end user" is a nincompoop. "Hello, Loafer? Mi boiler dunt wurk". What's the fault code on the display? "25". There's no gas. Take your card to the "local shop" and ask Mrs. Tattsyrup to top up the credit. "Oh, does it work on gas?" I kid you not.

Honestly with the cost of electricity at the moment compared to gas, heat pumps are just too expensive to run, also after doing research the technology just isn't there yet, (air source) are just unreliable, expensive to repair, bascially impossible to retrofit and no where near as effeciant (In England at-least) as the manaafacturers would have us believe.

Very few houses in the UK should be heated by timed controls - regardless of heat source. The best analogy is filling a bucket: If you run the tap at full whack the bucket will fill faster but you'll splash alot out. alternatively you could adjust the tap so you gradually fill the bucket just quicker than it leaks out any holes - this doesn't spill any.
