This video is in response to viewer emails (to nwa@northwestairguns.com) who raised a couple of topics. One was about how to lubricate a Sheridan or Benjamin pumper rifle, the other was how to install the valve retainer nut. Both are covered here in this short video.

Thanks for the recommendations and cutaway views. I've had my 5mm Sheridan since the late 1980s and it has served me well. Your advice should help extend the life of this air rifle.

My Sheridan is a dumpster rescue. And not only that, whoever threw it away tried to destroy her. They bent the barrel between 2 close fence posts and busted the stock and forearm. I know that because I found the pieces in and around the dumpster at the store & lock where our company rented a bin. I gathered up what pieces I could find then took the gun home and pounded the barrel as straight as I could with a rubber mallet then glued what wood I could find back together. She isn’t pretty. Has a lot of scars. Got the old peep sites but she can still hit a target the size of a quarter from about 30 feet

I just finished rebuilding my 1967 Sheridan Blue Streak and was puzzled over the orientation of the valve retainer nut even after watching this video. The kit I bought from Pyramyd Air came with an o-ring to seal the front of the valve body and a split teflon washer to seal the back. If I put the teflon washer in at the rear of the valve body and screw the nut into it with the beveled edge facing the front, the nut would crush/deform the teflon. In that case, it would make more sense to put the nut in backwards with the bevel facing the rear. I ended up reusing the original lead seal since it was still in good shape. In reality, I don't think the seal at the rear of the valve needs to be airtight anyway and the valve body nut provides mechanical alignment for the back of the valve body. There are three important seals in the valve area. First, the seal at the check valve to keep compressed air from leaking back into the pump cylinder. Second, the seal at the front of the valve body to keep compressed air from leaking back toward the back of the valve body. The third is the seal between the exhaust valve and the valve body where the air exits into the chamber when the gun is fired. If any of these seals leak the gun will not perform at 100% of capability. All the rebuild kits provide components that replace these three seals. The other thing I had to do was to make two tools out of wooden dowels with fine sandpaper (400 grit in my case) glued onto the end. One is for cleaning the check valve surface and the second was to clean bits of old seal material from the front of the valve body seal and repair scratches in it. I had put a couple of small scratches on that brass seal area trying to remove the old valve body seal material and was afraid that it would let air leak around the valve body. Without this series of videos I would not have been able to restore my old favorite Blue Streak that I've used frequently for the last 53 years.

There's a reason why to put the bevel forward and it is because the lead washer has to expand to seal the thread

Thank you, for makng this video. My grandfather had one, said it was not powerfull enough. He showed me how he was pumping it and he only opened the pump 25% of the way. I think it was never pumped fully once. I told him pump it all the way, it looks pretty powerfull. He passed and I thought about that gun, I believe my Aunt has it and she should, it should be passed to her grandchildren. I inherited a few of the firearms, and a lot of clothes that kinda fit. I aquired one with a few other broken airguns as at someones thanksgiving a child brought a box of them up from the basement, found them. The adults a few were taken a back and said they should not be in reach of children. I bought them and one is a similar much more used and possibly refinished outer barrel/receiver. Very happy to get it as I want to use it, never got to shoot my grandfathers. But before I was going to use it I want to make sure its lubricated, seems to work fine... But did not want to use the wrong lube. Where can I get Special Sauce I can not find it online? I run a bicycle shop and am inclined to use T9 lube. I have Pellgun oil, Tri flow, Wax lubes, super lube silicone grease I think better for seals. But I don't want to use the wrong thing.

Cool story, and lucky on the basement stash! Any lube is better than none, Pellgun is ok, but long term use tends to harden and gum things up over time. The web site for secret sauce is down, don't know when it goes back up. Slick 50/1lube is pretty good too.

I also own and use a 1967 Blue Streak. My Dad purchased it for me when I turned 13 years-0ld. Probably more than 20 yellow boxes of pells (10,000+) and no rebuilds, yet. No leaks. I purchased Silver streak for my son at his 13th (he is 37now) and it leaks a bit with relatiely low pell count. I gave him a kit.

Right, but many people have trouble starting the nut and end up crossthreading. So, if that happens, turn the nut over and see if it will start that way. Then if it seals up, you are done and nobody but you will know that the nut was reversed.

I've got a Baker rebuild kit for a 1969 Benjamin 342. When I opened the valve up there was no evidence of an inlet valve spring or washer between it and the outlet valve spring. What size washer does it need, or does it even need one? Can the springs just rest on each other? Thanks, Jack I appreciate these videos very much, I've poked around with springers but never a pneumatic multipump.

Hi Jack, you never know what you will find in these old guns, or not find. Best to contact Baker, since you got the kit from them. But I’d put a washer in there, 1/2” copper or brass. Need the inlet valve spring too. Baker can help you with that.

The solder has come lose on the retaining nut for the stock and keeping the bevel valve from coming out.
@NorthWestAirgun
@NorthWestAirgun 2 года назад
What model? If it's a Sheridan, you can sometimes stick a screwdriver or something to hold the screw in place, then tighten the nut to the tube. Once it is re-assembled and the stock nut tightened ( not overtightened), the lack of solder shouldn't be an issue.

Hey I have a benjiman model 347 the pump arm wouldn't stay down past 2 pumps it had been bent but bent back what should I do
@NorthWestAirgun
@NorthWestAirgun 5 лет назад
Hi Victor, hard to say what the effect of the bend is without seeing it, you can get a new handle from Precision Pellet at airgunshop.net , you'll have to call or email, I think it's about $25, and if you ask it will come with the link and link spring installed. All you have to do it swap out the wood. If the arm is getting pushed back due to pressure, it could be that the pump rod needs to be adjusted to be just a bit longer and bottom out on the compression tube. Maybe the bending did quite get you back to the original position of the pump rod. The other thing is that your check (or inlet) valve in the compression chamber is leaking. You can see if you leave the pump lever open after you pump it, let it sit for a while and see if it moves the lever more. Sometimes they move up past the air intake hole even. Good luck!!

My only problem is, in your videos, seem to say the given advice 40 different ways for each step, then repeat all 40 ways with information about all 40 ways & how you came to all 40 decisions & not 39 or 38 because that would leave 1 or two reasons, not 3 in this case because that would only be 37 reasons as 4 would be 36.
