Several of you asked me about the differences between air-source heat pumps and geothermal / ground-source heat pumps. The big two questions are usually: 1. Which one is "worth it”?, meaning are the lower operating expenses worth the higher upfront cost, in this case of ground-source heat pumps compared to air-to-water heat pumps. 2. Do air-source heat pumps really work in cold climates? The video digs deep into pricing including a financial model for air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps compared to oil furnaces.

Note: All types of ground-source heat pumps are often referred to as geothermal. However, for ground-source heat pumps the heat can come form either the sun heating up the earth or the core of the earth. For geothermal systems the heat comes from the core of the earth.

Monoblock air to water heat pumps can use more efficient, lower GHG refrigerants like R32 and R290 because the refrigerant is contained outside the house. Unfortunately they are impossible to find as yet in Canada. R410 is advertised as a "green" refrigerant. It is not.

Hi, refrigerants are on my list of potential videos. The most environmentally friendly refrigerant is CO2, I think. Cheers, Katha

@@NetZeroTech CO2 sounds good on the surface but the truth is that the equipment required is much more complex since it runs at very high pressures and it's more expensive than the very green (low GWP) and cheap R290. R290 is the ideal ATW monoblock refrigerant for Canadian climates. It's irrelevant that the refrigerant is flammable for a monoblock since it's outside and any release would safely dissipate. A propane BBQ or a gas boiler/furnace is more dangerous than a hermetically sealed heat pump.

Most heat pumps in the US use R410, whose production is being phased out. Hard to find CO2 or propane based heat pumps. I have read that there are heat pumps that use air source until it drops too low than switches to ground source, but that will not be found in the US either. I definitely like the idea of a buffer tank and solar powered compressors, that's doable, except for the outrageous money being asked for a hot water tank. Thanks for the video.

@@NetZeroTech Here is one source: www.energy.gov/energysaver/geothermal-heat-pumps there are many others, BUT, the term hybrid is not used consistently, so you may have to read to make sure. And so just to make sure you understand me, the hybrid would use an air-source until temp gets too low, then switch to ground source. One other thing (it's probably not my idea, but I haven't found any other reference to it is this. Just after the compressor and condenser dump the heat into water, then send still warm refrigerant to an wall mount unit to dump remaining/residual heat to the room air. Allows for more heat to be extracted from the refrigerant because of the lower exhaust temp into room air. Should be more efficient.

And what about air to air? They are far simpler and more efficient to run. Air to water is not more efficient.

Hey, Thanks for leaving a comment. You can find info on air-source heat pumps in several of my videos: 1. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3ExhnTuYNZ4.html, 2. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l83GOCpcotY.htmlsi=cGW-zhiGFy6GKoPq, and 3. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Fv7xkOcud5w.htmlsi=D5ex9F-K724FcfbE. Air-to-water should be more efficient than air-source, especially with a water tank. Hope this helps, Katha
