AIRA IS FANTASTIC!!!! AKA tired of people not reading the description

PLEASE READ THIS: I posted that title as a joke in response to a GS thread the DAY when the Aira series came out. It made sense then, of course if you read it years later, it's different. At any rate, it was a joke and I was actually being appreciative of the Aira series, if you had read the description you would have understood it: "Sorry, I don't have an AIRA product yet (but I definitely like what I hear in the demos that came out today)".

Console tape-its used to hold down a button (not sure which) which effectively lets the sequencer be transposable without having to hold down anything.

I had an 808 & 909 and through pure luck sold them *just* before Roland announced the Aira range. I've now got a TR-8 and a load of cash. They were nice to own and I'm glad to have had them, but in the mix nobody knows whether it's the real thing or not. They are museum pieces now. I'm never selling my TB-303 or SH-101 though, they are something special.

Great kit and great sounds. For those of you who are complaining about prices, you should have bought in the early '90s (if you were even born back then) TR-909 - $250, TR-808 - $400 etc. Keep up a bit of history. Cheers.

Yes Richard, a good TR-808 is hard to beat in stakes of sound quality. However, mine was fully restored, because all electrolytic caps were starting to leak, all switches were corroded and more than just one potmeter had problems or was simply broken.... it took me a full month to replace ALL more than 100 electrolytic caps, desolder those slide- and toggle switches from the PCB, open them, clean every little contact, put them back together and solder them back on the PCB again. But is is SOOOO rewarding... it booms and sizzles like it is new now!! I also rewired it for 240V which is way better than 220V. You should remember: this is 35 years old electronic equipment, and it WILL have problems by now. ALL of them. Even the newer TR-909 has started to get some serious problems, I have one here for restoration right now.

Aira is for people who can't get their hands on real TR 808s & 909s & TB 303s. Seeing that you have all of the above you probably don't need any Aira products. I mean I wouldn't mind geting an Aira TR 8, but that's because I never had a real 808 or 909 & I don't have the thousands of dollars to spend on them.

I cant afford to purchase an 808 or 909 so i am grateful for these boxes in the Aira line. ive pre ordered each Aria machine and plan to have a ball, sparking the creative process.Synthmania you are just awesome sir. Cool video. I want to be able to control a loop sequence in logic like you do in this video with my my midi controller keyboard. For example the way that you can change the pitch of the bass line of the sequence by pressing a key on the keyboard. Ideally I'd want to split it up so that I could control the pitch of the bass line with left hand on the keyboard, and any synth pads from another software instrument on the right hand. Anyone know how to do that?

First of all I want to say that I come from a background of playing guitar straight into an amp and have no experience of this live electronic looping business. One thing I want to know is how you go about mixing the audio...do you record everything onto seperate tracks and then process with eq, compression later, or do you already have everything set up beforehand? If so, how? Great track by the way.
@SynthManiaDotCom
@SynthManiaDotCom 7 лет назад
No separate tracks on this one - this one was recorded live straight to a stereo track using the mixing console that's behind me (out of frame in the video). There's hardly any compression and eq as this was just improvised very quickly, just the reverb that you hear being mixed in and out, again using the aux sends on the mixer behind me.

I need some help please. I'm wanting to move towards electronic music. I far prefer hardware as opposed to software and love the old school sounds from the 80's early 90's. Aside from the TT-303 and the TB-8 what other equipment do I require to make electronic music? What do I use to sample for instance? Some of the set ups I've seen are mind boggling so It would be good to start off with something more simple and back to basics.

+Thomas Savatski You've heard them mostly processed.. the tr-8 can process sounds in unique ways, you can get tonnes of tones you can't come close to on the original gear - that alone makes it more versatile, specially since it can come pretty damn close to replicating the old tones. Would I turn down a real 808/909? Only if I'm paying for them. :)

That's a good point, but when someone is forking out 1000's for a piece of classic equipment, they are buying it for its staple functions, opposed to versatility!

For sure, the sounds with high frewuencies in it DO sound better from a TR-808 than from an Aira - period. Just look for the comparison someone did on the internet and draw your own conclusions. While the high frequencies from a TR-808 are all singing and dancing, those from an Aira sound like someone hits a tin with a fork :-(

Jonny Parker What's your reasoning? The Airas definitely don't sound like the originals. They do sound bloody nice, though, that being said. But not as close to the originals as a gear-nut would want them to sound... I've got some old goodies, and even the x0xboxes, being analog, cannot get close to the 303 original sound... Airas are good for what they are. I wouldn't compare them to the originals.
@JonnyParker-
@JonnyParker- 9 лет назад
Yeah i mean i would say they do sound good , fair play but the sales of these could create more demand for the 303 , hence the prices could go up for the original piece . I dunno man thats my initial thoughts . I just want a Prophet 12 and a pound of skunk .

+DFXist Phasing is when 2 waveforms of slightly different frequencies interact to create a kind of moving comb filter effect. Warmth refers to the slight, chaotic inconsistencies in oscillator tuning characteristic of generally older analogue gear, which gives a sense of life (or warmth) to the sound, distinct from the digital equivalents. Is there anything else you'd like clarified?

Great demo of the real thing! I find it sad that the Aira System-1 will not have an internal sequencer. Triggering the SH-101s internal sequencer from a drum track was a very powerful creative tool in the groove creation process. This leads me to believe Roland still doesn't fully understand what made these older instruments so special. I do plan on giving the TR-8 a try. Sounds close enough. But I'll still have to use my TR-7x7s and 606 to trigger my older gear.

(my 2nd comment today) Question: So you make the SH 1O1 run by the rim shot from the 9O9 put to it's clock or (or sorta gate) of the arpeggiator? That's the way? Other question: Both the 8O8 and the 9O9 has separate outputs for all tracks? (or drums) THX

SynthMania I can't stop myself :) Oh yes sequencer of the SH 1O1... (not arp.) (I am doing research on the field of Italo Disco actually...) :) So ..many of the early Italo tracks were done this way too? There was no 9O9 yes I know ... but there was many other drum machines... All earlier drummachines had a gate or clock triggering output? (I mean the more serious ones) ? So the sequence of the bass was octaving only and they basically changed note by hand during recording? (...before the days of midi and Atari.... or else) ... Regular records from the early 8Os were done by this sort of way? Even ones with many chords changing? That is clear that for example Dan Harrow songs were done completely sequenced on something... ... like Atari? Or what? But how was before? :) If it was gate triggering (like on the SH meets 9O9) , then , it was something like a skill that musicians and synth heads adored and celebrated? Thanks for your answers! (and keep on rockin)
@SynthManiaDotCom
@SynthManiaDotCom 10 лет назад
Yes, some Italo Disco tracks were done simply with arpeggiators and / or sync tracks - however they also used the early CV-Gate sequencers, and when MIDI came out, hardware and / or software MIDI sequencers
