The mystery airfield is at Alkham (Chalksole Green Farm)... which could be the site of the former RAF Swingfield base (which closed in 1945), or at least be on a spot just to the south of it. [Ref. 51.144597, 1.208403]
Things I noticed, #1 How Quiet it is, considering the size, #2 How quickly it took off and slowed down, not needing a long runway. #3 Lot's of room, spacious, #4 Large windows, including the lavatory. Awesome video mate, Gotta love Bombardier and Airbus, Cheers from Canada eh! ;)
Nice win for Bombardier by ITC against Boeing regarding the tariff nonsense, so we may look forward to several North American airlines flying the C-series as well as Air Canada and Delta
The vehicle you are traveling on made Boeing very nervous. Indeed we can see, and hear, why! Beautiful plane, and review. My goodness can't believe you were sitting next to a jet engine on take off. Amazing!
That plane is unbelievable how quiet it is and if I did not see this video I would not believe anyone who said this. Love the videos and looking forward for the next one
The wings are built at the old Shorts plant in Belfast. Shorts was a manufacturer dating back pre WWII having built the Sterling bomber for the RAF as well as the SD-330/ 360 regional aircraft in the '70s-'80. My first flights were in the SD-330.
Pronunciations aside....another superb trip report! I have flown DC-9/Md80 and passengers loved the 2 X 3 seating arrangement, kudos to Bombardier for bringing it back.
Just love the little local geographical references you give. The C series is so well suited to London city, it's such a shame that such a great new plane has had such a troubled history in getting to market. Thanks for the great vlogs!
Though I have never ridden in or flown the CS-100, I am not surprised to hear that it is a quality product. I used to work for Bombardier, which our host consistently mispronounced. Proper pronunciation is Bombardeeaa. It's a great company that began with the tragic death of the founders son, when he couldn't be gotten to a hospital because of heavy snow in Montreal, Canada. This prompted the founder to invent the ski-mobile. From there his company diversified into jet ski's, rubber boats, trains and many other products. They eventually bought the Canadian aircraft manufacturer, Canadair, which was already producing a quality line of business jets, called the Challenger. Since then, they have gone on to produce a larger business jet called the Global Express, which IMO, is superior to the world Famous. Though it is powered by the same model of Rolls Royce turbofan engines, It is a wider plane, with a bit more head room, which gives the passengers a substantially larger cabin to walk around in. They expanded their aircraft line to include the very successful line of CRJ regional jets. My job was maintaining the business jets at their Tucson, Arizona facility, where people like Steven Spielberg and Opra Winfrey have their Global Express aircraft maintained. Though I did not work in the factory, I did go there when the company sent me to Montreal for training on how to maintain the Global and Challenger aircraft. I was able to take a very detailed tour of the factory, and as someone with over 35 years of previous aircraft engineering under my belt, I was able to make a qualified judgement of the manufacturing facility and processes used by Bombardier, as well as the excellent designing that went into these aircraft. Having been retired for nearly 10 years now, I can speak honestly, as I have no dog in the fight between manufacturers. The CS-100/A-220 is an excellent aircraft. I expected nothing less from Bombardier. Boeing has nothing in its' class, so I'm not sure what they are upset about. They have had plenty of opportunities to build a smaller plane that would fit better in today's aviation marketplace, but they chose not to. End of story. The only company that is giving Bombardier any competition in this class of aircraft, is Embraer of Brazil, which is building some very nice regional aircraft too. I believe that Boeing is mostly upset by the fact that Airbus is getting into the RJ market by piggy-backing the CS-100 series into their line, without any serious risk, as the development was all done by Bombardier. Also, unlike Boeing, Airbus is a company that operates by the use of heavy cash infusions via government subsidies, where Boeing has to earn all of their money. This has allowed Airbus to dump product onto the world market, by just about giving aircraft away on the front end and hoping to make it up with spare parts sales. In fact, if it wasn't for government subsidies, Airbus could not have produced the A-380, which has never broken even, and without those subsidies, would have bankrupted Airbus. When Boeing first built the 747, it was taking a huge gamble with the very existence of the company. If the 747 had failed as badly as the A-380, which was and continues to be, a colossal failure, Boeing would have gone out of business in the late 1960's or early 70's, as they had literally bet the company on it's success. Airbus has never been in any sort of danger, as they have the tax payers of France, Germany, England and Spain to keep them afloat. So you see, Boeing does have somewhat of a legitimate beef with Airbus. However, as I mentioned, they also have themselves to blame, for not getting into the very lucrative regional jet market. I have tried to keep my comments as honest and un-biased as possible, but I am sure that there are some out there who will take umbrage with what I have stated here, and so, will probably end up calling me every name in the book, except the one that is on my birth certificate. That is your right.
Yeah, Boeing should have done what Airbus did with the CSeries. Heck, it looks like a mini 787 anyway, so it would have fit right in with Boeing's product line.
One thing though, Boeing is also heavily subsidized by the US Government via military contracts and soft protectionism within the domestic US market. It's one thing to state that Airbus is heavily subsidized by various European Governments, but at least acknowledge that Boeing is as will by the US Government.
00bikeboy Because Boeing hasn't got anything that compete with this. And yes the plane really is that good. Way more space than any Embraer and more comfortable than both the Boeing and Airbus narrow bodies. Definitely piddles all over the Dash-8's
Kevin Lee not really. They own the controlling share, 50.1%. It's a partnership where one party has control. Not to say they'll be calling all the shots, but they could if they wanted.
Paul's Trip Reports. The CS100 is NOT the biggest plane serving London City Airport. It would be second but the biggest plane is the Airbus A318. Witch goes from LCY-JFK via Shannon.
It must give Bombardier designers and engineers as well as Canadians in general a huge punch in the gut to see their blood, sweat, tears, and billion$ ripped off their C300 relabeled a A220, all their work wiped off their project. Well done video you should be in the ad business
@@Msrosy145 The table was the airlines choice, Bombardier just builds the aircraft and the airlines have it outfitted with whatever interior they want, from whatever company they want, so you can't really blame Bombardier because they didn't make these seats.
I subscribed to you cause you add little bits of information in texts along with the video about landmarks and landmasses as you fly over them, good trivia !
Great video. Interesting to see the Montenegro Airlines F100 there. I recently flew in that from Paris to Podgorica- a great old school airliner with big think leather seats. Service was a cheese and ham roll served with soft drinks and coffee. No alcohol - I would have loved to have purchased some wine. Montenegro itself is a stunning country and really enjoyed my trip there.
As a Canadian I'm hoping the C-Series aircraft are a HUGE success around the world! Initial reports are that the airlines that use it love it, as do the passengers, a total win-win for Bombardier. Paul, I've watched quite a few of your videos now and I can't remember seeing a go-around, have you been on a flight that had to abort the landing?
wow what refinement, for a narrow-body it seems so un-claustrophobic in the cabin and big egg-shaped windows, and that quiet!!! how is that possible? it seems almost electric!
I suspect they employ the same noise cancelling technology installed in the Dash 8 series making the Dash 8 -Q400 the quietest in her class by a mile, it really is effective as you can tell, this has to be one of the most well engineered, well researched and tediously well developed airliners of our time, certainly a good fit for Swiss! Good on Airbus for seeing the potential, hopefully the advanced technologies and evolved thinking will spill off in to their future designs. It seemns like it's nearly impossible to build a bad airliner nowadays, Embraer's E2 is mind blowing, the A220 is a world leader, the A350, Dreamliner, 777X and 748 are nearly at Star Trek level it's an exciting time for commercial aviation.
I have heard and read so many good things about the C Series aircraft. Lighter, more fule efficient and so quiet. Those P&W engines are amazing. Its a shame those corporate ass hats at Boeing have tarnished and for the most part closed the door of the sales prospects within the US market of what is an amazing aircraft. It was good to see Airbus step in as I guess they see the huge potential of the aircraft. But the damage was done as Delta pulled out of a huge order of 100 aircraft I think because of tariffs placed on the C Series of 400% by the US government. Boeing back off. Seriously, stand back and have a good look at yourself. You are a bully and a joke. You have your billions and your empire. All's you have done now is tarnishing your name and reputation. Shame on you Boeing. Shame on you.
A couple days back Bombardier WON in court! The US International Trade Commission overturned the CORRUPT, BIASED decision by the Trump Administration's commerce department!! And Delta never backed out of the order. They stood firm in the face of all this bullying. I used to be a huge fan of Boeing, and still consider the 747 to be one of the greatest achievements of all time, but this DESPICABLE and SHAMEFUL act by Boeing has really soured me on the company!! As someone who swears by Capitalism and the Free Market system, I was appalled and disgusted to see Boeing going to the nanny government like a crybaby falsely accusing Bombardier of all sorts of BS!! In a free market, when there is a BUYER AND A SELLER, the best product that is sold at the most competitive price WINS, no ifs ands or buts!!! And the C-series is an awesome aircraft, as evidenced by the rave reviews and the fact that Delta placed such a huge order! Boeing saw the writing on the wall: The C-series was a huge success, and was just the START of Bombardier making inroads into the mainstream aircraft market (just like Airbus did 40+ years back). Once the C-series built momentum with airlines, the next logical step for Bombardier was to make bigger and larger widebody aircraft. Boeing saw this as a huge threat, in terms of future competition, and went crying to the US government, throwing out whatever allegations it could come up with and would stick, in a sick attempt to silence its competitors. DISGUSTING AND SHAMEFUL behavior, from a company that once competed purely on its excellence and ingenuity! Now that the court has ruled in Bombardier's favor, they've been put in their rightful place and look extremely foolish. The irony of this whole thing is, that the biggest beneficiary of this whole fiasco is AIRBUS, their biggest rival. This current "management" at Boeing has got to be made up of the stupidest idiots on the planet!! * rollseyes *
Nice spread for a shorter flight. I’m guessing you were paying slightly more to arrive at London City well fed, than on EasyJet or RyanAir into London’s outlying airports
If it's not Boeing I'm not going! Lol....Only kidding. Nice trip report and I for one like the music. I find it relaxing etc. One thing I wish you would add to every description is the air fare. It doesn't have to be what you paid. It could just be the published fare for a given route. I realize this gets tricky in coach / economy but first and biz class are pretty straightforward.
When it comes to the technical stuff, I absolutely love it! It can fly transatlantic from NY to London, can takeoff and land on a shorter runway and the comfort is very nice. I didn't fly this plane yet...
My GF and I flew on a smaller Bombardier aircraft for a two-hour flight. Can't remember the model number -- something 900? Anyway, twin rear-engines like a smaller DC-9 or something. Very nice aircraft. Bright and well-lit. Comfortable seats. Won me over. Then on our return flight the twenty-something pilot just about killed us all with a messed-up glide slope to landing followed by a side-slipping almost stall over the Ohio River. All passengers were silently praying we would make it. When we did safely touch down the flight attendant simply said over the intercom -- " Well -- we made it......." Kinda spoke for us all.
Hi Paul, love the videos and your presentation style! A small tip, whenever you fly into LCY again, try and get a window seat on the right of the plane, there's a chance you see an unforgettable view of the shard as the aircraft lines up for its final approach.
The AirBaltic CS100 planes are actually configured differently! They have a business class curtain and the storage pocket is much more traditional, though it also has one at the top for magazines and one at the bottom, to name a couple.
Two takeaways...1) The video is worth watching just to see the Constellation! 2) Your first impression was the same mine would have been...the spacious windows and the light. This looks like a beautiful aircraft...I must add it to the list.
Please do montenegro airlines i live in the city where montenegro airlines comes.I would love to meet you then. And you will love it for sure, great legroom, good food, amazing cabin crew etc.
Awesome video, will you be flying Air Canada, Rouge, or Express anytime soon? (The E-175s and CRJ-900s have IFE and wifi, as does Rouge, but IFE from your phone or tablet)
Paul, First-time commenter here, and just subscribed to your Channel - you have a clear, concise and friendly style, so viewing is a pleasure. Of course it's interesting and informative too. This plane looks good... If you are impressed, then it must be so! I'm considering a trip to Berlin in the New Year - I always consider BHX because I live 15 minutes' walk from Coventry rail station. However you planted the idea that LCY might be a viable alternative for me... I've never flown from there before.
Glad to see the new plane in action! Living in the Seattle area, we gets tons of aviation news (as you can imagine). Also glad to see you made the connection for the Embraer, since I flown those several times on short runs.
Some day I be flying in a CS-100. The first time I saw one was not at an airport, but at the Bombardier facility in Wichita, Kansas, when it was still in its prototype stage a few years ago! I did mention a couple of the company heads (who led our university tours) that it looks like Bombardier was looking to compete with the Boeing 737, and they definitely confirmed that. The Wichita facility did not build the CS-100 however (as many of us know; they build the executive jets), but that prototype was there for flight testing and type certification.
Delta’s Airline test pilots were so impressed with this new C series that they immediately placed a huge order but unfortunately due to Canadian and US Tariff issues, its not happening. Love that engine “Howl” on acceleration!
The CS100 is my favorite aircraft type due to the large windows like the 787,winglets resembling A330/A340/B744 and the overhead screens which are just helpful for any AV geek.Well done PAUL. Only drawback being the faulty PW1000 engines(IndiGo and Go Air suffering).
The CSeries PW1500 don't suffer as much those PW1000 that equips the A320 NEOs. They (PW1500) were tested much longer, and the few problems they had are about to be solved this month. (It did delay the CSeries production ramp up thought.)
Great video as usual looks an impressive aircraft. Shame you have to.put up with these people who are more concerned with how to pronounce the manufacturers name.
Good to see the old good Fokker 100! This was a great video, I suggest you make a review of Montenegro Airlines. I flew with it a lot of times, and it was pretty comfortable. It doesn't give much, but the legroom and many other things are pretty good, in my opinion.
Yes, the Bombardier aircraft are always parked outside the terminal buildings in ZRH, which is a nuisance and a big hassle for passengers with tight onward connections. Not understandable that these aircraft are not parked at the terminals as they are not smaller than a DC-9 or any similar aircraft.
I don't like those buses because looking out of the windows the view is not clearly because the livery of the bus going over the window... Thank you for sharing your video with us!
I love flying Swiss myself, still trying to get a flight on the C Series though! Went on one at the Dubai Airshow a few years ago and loved it there! Definitely want to try one in the air!
CS100 is a very good aircraft (with it's wings built here in Northern Ireland), that is why Boeing is playing it's 'bully boy card'. Great video Paul :-)
Boeing is playing that card because it is hard to compete against a company like Airbus that receives subsidies (money for nothing)from the governments that support it. Unlike Airbus, Boeing has to earn all of their money. Having said that, I agree that the CS-100 is a good airplane.
Boeing did that because Bombardier made a sales offer to an American airline where the planes were to be sold well below their production costs, which was possible thanks to government subsidies. So subsequently, they sold off the series to Airbus.
Cheers Paul. Great report; I have been fortunate to fly cs100 & 300 series and other than length I found no noticeable difference between them. Nice to see LuCY yet again. Used to work there with World Airlines.
I can't remember the name of that little airfield but it's a gliding strip and I had to find it on my navigation skills test. Nearly couldn't find the bloody place and I was on the verge of failure when persevering took hold and I successfully managed to locate it! It's near Paul McCartney's pad!
Edelweiss fly from Inverness now? Yet still not from Aberdeen. Never ceases to amaze me how difficult it is to get from Switzerland from the North East of Scotland.
I get that request all the time! I don’t have any appetite to spend any money with BA any longer sadly. They’re a poor airline. BA1 service has 2-2 seating which is very weak, no privacy at all on a flight comprised of business travellers. Never really understood why people liked it so much!
Looking at your previous BA trip reports I can totally understand why! Perhaps it is just the nostalgic flight number but I agree that there are definitely better transatlantic operators, albeit without the same 'prestige' as an A318 but who will give you a better all round product. Thanks for replying to my question though! :)
