Alameda, the former NAVY port. The Big E's home port. It still is in use where refueler ships are located. CV-12 USS Hornet Carrier Museum is there now. I saw the Big E on same dock, other side. I remembered exactly each end of it for length. So to see the Hornet on same dock years later- a perfect example of length difference, Big E Way outsizes Hornet. I also saw the BB-62 USS New Jersey Battleship same day when I saw the Big E. To not even realize it was there and then to turn and see those two forward guns pointing- staring right at me from about 15 feet away, WOW! *** Invited by the Captain of the BIG E for a personal tour ( 2.5 hours )we got to the front Naval yard entrance. My dad asks the guard, "so where do we go?" The Guard says, "you go straight down this street till it ends. Then turn left." That is all he says. So my dad asks, "so where from there?" The guard replies, " oh don't worry, you will see it. " Then walks back into guard room. We go straight down, and make a left. We don't see it. Then I spot it- "THERE IT IS !" It was directly ahead of us. The front left side entirely blocking out the SF side 100%. The guard wasn't joking ! At the furthest end of the last dock on the outside of that dock. Hornet is on the inside east of that dock ( pier ). Google map -satelite view and scroll down and you will see the HORNET. Big E on the bay side. Hornet far north end ( back side-left side )matches up where Big E back end was and Big E about 50% longer to end of dock. Front of Big E ends at where Ferry Point ends at the water, right side or south side. From where Ferry Point cuts and heads downward directly at the bay ( heading toward Big E ) is where I spotted it. Click on the link brings up satelite view and you then will see the size between the two Carriers. Then to think that the FORD is longer. AWESOME. Yes I know it is not where the Big E was suppose to be docked there. It was NOT a scheduled stop. It came back if I remember because of an explosion on deck. No, John McCain wasn't on this Carrier ! I hope you liked the story.

@@robertj.davidson362 they were replaced on CVN-65 every 20 years. Then the newer ones they went to 50 years. The CVN-78 USS Ford I believe is 90 years now.

Merle Morrison I can't say the current state of the reactor because I don't know. However, the U.S. Navy does have a reactor decommissioning program. Yes, it does take couple of years to do, not cheap, and does depend on funding. Moreover, I understand the reactor in the Nautilus museum is still in place. Just because a ship is nuclear powered doesn't mean the whole ship is contaminated. In fact only a small part of the whole structure would be active. Remember many people had to live and work on these ships, even when the reactors were at full power and not shut down as they currently are.

I see it everyday when I'm down by the shipyard and the new Kennedy is under construction with plans to build the new ford class carrier the enterprise when the Kennedy is completed which both new carriers is budgeted into the military budget

There is No Practical use left in a 60 year old Carrier. She is Worn out beyond repair. The CVN-65 Enterprise served her time well. I did 3 Major Deployments on the Big E.

@@memyself1176 - The BIG E was CVN-65 USS Enterprise. CVN = Carrier Vessel Nuclear. Now retired. Was the largest Carrier in the world back then. CVN-80 is being built right now will be the new USS Enterprise. Will tie for largest Carrier in the world with 3 others of ours.
