Aircraft Carriers In Gunfights - “What Do You Mean We're a Carrier?”

Aircraft Carriers, as the name implies, exist primarily to ferry aircraft around. And to launch strikes with those aircraft, or cover the fleet.
In the early days, however, it wasn't so apparent. This is why you see carriers with eight-inch guns cropping up. There was, after all, a belief they'd be getting in gunfights with cruisers or destroyers.
This didn't actually happen...for the most part. This video will look at three cases where it did. Well, two involving surface actions, and one involving shore bombardment.

The USMC parking trucks with anti-ship missiles on the decks of amphibious assault ships is I feel like the modern equivalent.

It's hilarious how the heavily-gunned carriers like the Lexingtons, Akagi, Kaga, and Graf Zeppelin never got to fire their big guns at surface targets while Indomitable, Unicorn, and the Taffys "made do" with smaller guns.

The Lexington and Saratoga had their 8in guns removed and replaced with four dual purpose twin 5in mounts a year before the war. Kaga also had her 6in guns removed in a refit long before Midway. The Graf Zepppelin was never launched so it should not even be mentioned.

From the Armoured Carriers website: “Lieutenant T. Campling RNVR, one of Formidable's Gunnery Control Officers, recalls in Voices in Flight that Formidable's 4.5-inch dual-purpose guns actually contributed to the gun fight:” “Although we received the order to open fire the order was almost immediately countermanded as Formidable turned out of line to starboard. One salvo was in fact fired by Formidable, and this must have been one of the few occasions during the Second World War when an aircraft carrier used its main gunnery armament against a major enemy warship.”

Ah, Armoured Carriers. I admittedly forgot about that channel a bit after they changed the name. Still, that’s useful, thank you. I’ll need to poke my head in there later.

During the Indian Ocean raid by Hiryu and Soryu Admiral Cunningham came close to engaging the Japanese carriers in a night action. What the outcome would have been is interesting to speculate.

USS Kalinin Bay survived 15 direct hits off Samar, including a 14-inch shell from the battlecruiser Haruna. The rest were 8-inch shells from the heavy cruisers Haguro and Tone (mostly from Haguro). In exchange, she hit Haguro two times with her 5-inch guns, causing minor damage.

USS Fanshaw Bay, USS Kalinin Bay, USS Gambier Bay, and USS White Plains all fired on and claimed hits on IJN cruisers in the Battle off Samar. All carried 5"/38 dual purpose guns, though the anticipated usage would have been against aircraft. The 5"/38 probably could not penetrate cruiser armor, but with its high rate of fire could make a mess of superstructure and other exposed areas.

All things considered the Battle off Samar was a fine example of EVERYONE grabbing the rope (gun, torpedo or anything else that would stop or slow down the other guys) and pulling FIRMLY in the same direction, in other words towards the other guys.

Ships logbook for HMS Formidable should be the very best source to check. It should be in the Royal Museum or the Admiralty may have it

In her Wiki article, it is mentioned HMS Unicorn came to the aid of a Merchant ship attacked by Taiwanese boats (the Taiwanese tried to attack any shipping going to Communist China). Unicorn circled the freighter with guns at the ready and dissuaded the ROC "freedom fighters" from trying to board.

Entirely because of her captain’s stupidity that prevented her from just moving away before they found her.

Wouldnt Formidables log state if they opened fire? It seems like the kind of thing that would be kept in an archive somewhere

In some of the older Wikipedia descriptions of Gambier Bay’s final battle, they claimed Gambier Bay hit an enemy cruiser (IJN Chikuma) with her 5-inch guns. Did this actually happen, especially given updates to her Wiki has since removed such a claim?

Japanese CVL Ryujo fired on the merchant ship Taksang during the Indian Ocean Operation according to "Bloody Shambles Vol. 2" and may have helped sink Dutch auxiliary minesweeper Endeh with her guns as well, since her plane guard destroyer Shiokaze is also noted as helping sink the ship and survivors accounts note that the carrier also fired on the ship.

Fascinating, the Ryujo is my favorite Japanese carrier. Thanks for the input.

The Formidable and Unicorn both used their primary gun batteries (the former carried 16 x 4.5” DP guns; the latter 8 x 4” DP guns) in these engagements, and not, as stated in the commentary, their secondary gun batteries.

There's no doubt that Chops it's torpedo tubes didn't explode. Hoever,she probably carried spares. So there is still a chance that she took a devastating hit from that five-incher.

After losing ‘Glorious’ to surface forces why would the Royal Navy put a carrier into a night surface engagement when they knew exactly where the Italian vessels were?

Did the _USS Lexington_ ever get 5"/38s in place of her 8" guns"
@skyneahistory2306
@skyneahistory2306 Месяц назад
Nope. You can find pictures of her at Coral Sea (or sailing there) with empty mounts. Well, ‘empty’. She had 1.1-inch quads at least. (And her wreck confirms this, too)

Didn't _Chokai_ carry reioads? Could it have been those?
@nicholasconder4703
@nicholasconder4703 Месяц назад
No, the wreck showed no sign of massive explosions. The wreck did show what appeared to be large shell holes, suggesting that Chokai was hit by friendly fire, either from Nagato or, more likely, Yamato, as Chokai was close enough to the CVEs to exchange 5" gunfire with them.

No comment on HMS Glorious being sunk by the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau or IJN Ryujo wanting to close in and use its guns aga9inst Britosh merchant ships during the Indian Ocean raid ?
@theholyinquisition389

Glorious didn't really get to shoot back, so it is more like Scharnhorts and Gneisenau gunning down an opponent that didn't fight back.

@@theholyinquisition389 True, but the video is called "Aircraft Carriers in Gunfights", so it kind of counts even if it was more of an execution than a gunfight.
