Review of the BRAND NEW 2020 Airfix Blackburn Buccaneer S.2B in 1/72 (A06022) Plus tales of DAD'S ARMY etc...(I used to live near RAF Honington Buccaneer base in 1973 and my Primary School was where the TV show was filmed every friday after school in the summer months, and also in Thetford area...I even met most of the cast during the filming of 'The Captain's Car' episode outside Thetford town hall!

I love the Buccaneer drive past one at Elgin every time I go south, I believe it is the sky pirates version. I have actually been to RAF Lossimouth as I was in the air cadets and have seen 12 sqn on the flight line.

On reflection on this kit, isn't it mind-blowing when you consider there are 85 stages in a build on a 1/72 model jet? 😯

Loved the Buccaneers at RAF Honnington. Especially the way they would ghost low over the hedges to be followed seconds later by the jet noise! Frightened the crap out of you every time!

Great review, Peter! You reminded me I had the Airfix S2.C in my stash, which I've never opened. Had a quick look just now and agree with you, the molding is very good. I do like the schemes for the RAF S.2B better, so I'll most likely pick that kit up as well. I agree with you also about the Kits-World decals. I've used them once before and they worked fantastic. Thanks for this video, and sharing your connection with the Buccaneer. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Cheers!

Hi Peter Back in 1975, XV360, an S2, crashed off the east coast at Covehithe. My family found the washed up maps while walking there. We returned the maps via the police, and as a thank you, got invited to RAF Honington. Me and my brother got to sit in the flight simulator and in a Buccaneer cockpit. And we had tea in the Officer’s Mess with the Squadron Leader (maybe the Wing Commander). Trouble is, I was only 7 at the time and didn’t really appreciate it, or even remember much about it!

Hi Robert, sounds like I am only two years older myself...must have been fun though. But I wondered: Did the Buccaneer crew survive the accident?

Great review - should help sell to any doubters. I had the privilege of living close to RNAY Sydenham (as it was then, now Belfast City Airport) who used the Short Brothers runway. Watching Buccaneers fly literally over the house was a daily treat, as it had been with Canberras (they were converted to PR at Shorts) and Scimitars (I wish there was a decent kit of the Scimitar by a major manufacturer). I had the old Airfix Blackburn NA39 then, complete with its rudimentary but fun folding wings, opening (hollow) airbrakes, folding nose and rotating bomb bay. Many thanks again!

Thanks Neil. I miss the rotating bomb bay door from the original Airfix kit, and am a tiny bit worried about the how the nose section will join (hopefully without and step or seam!) so fingers crossed! 🤞🏻

A scrap view,in engineering drawing terminology at least,is a view which shows the hidden parts of a component through a sectioned representation of the part,i.e it could show holes in section which are not apparent on a standard plan or side view.

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Peter it's a bit wordy! My dad used to work at Hucknall colliery and he had a best mate called Robin Baily who worked for the GPO on Hucknall high street. Robin was a talented amateur actor who hated the GPO and wanted to pursue a professional career. To cut a story short my dad gave Robin £20 to fund a move to London to try his acting career. £20 was an awful lot of money to my dad as mining was very badly paid in the early '60s. They kept in touch by letter until one day he told dad he'd got a part in the new bond film You Only Live Twice! Sometime later dad got another letter asking him if he and my mum would like a weekend in London with a trip to the studios to see the set. I remember Robin Baily turning up outside our council house in a maroon Rolls Royce (borrowed from Donald Pleasance) and whisking them away. Robin had asked Donald Pleasence to ask Cubby Broccoli for permission for a set visit and he agreed. They had an amazing visit toured the volcano set and had a picture taken on the monorail with Donald Pleasance and Sean Connery, as they were prepping for the battle scenes. They later had dinner in the canteen with Donald Pleasance Sean Conner and Cubby Broccoli. They weren't allowed to take a camera on set but the studio photographer took some amazing pictures which I treasure to this day. And to cap it all off Donald Pleasence and Robin Baily took my parents to the west end to watch a show(I think it was half a sixpence)

I Built the naval version Of this kit and it was great it is almost like a Tamia kit But There is Absolutely No control Panel detail So if you don't use the pilot you might want to get Edward Photoech If you to use the pilot And Navigator They hide most of the detail Anyway Also The Front intakes are made of 2 haves And Leave a very visible join seem But it's not too hard to clean With puty and a sanding sponge

these more expensive kits are supplied in great boxes, being corrugated cardboard and will store well. got the naval version which is as impressive. incidently, the older 1/48 airfix Bucc is a very good kit too personally, i like the Bucc in the grey-green wrap around scheme and it's great that airfix always provide this finish as an option on their contemporary kits of 1970/80s raf aircraft.

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Amen. Tanmodel (Turkish make) supposedly have a 48th Buccaneer planned for this year, though only in RAF & SAAF colours it seems. Airfix would also do well to retool their 48th Sea-Harrier FA.2 (the only such kit in that size), which I'm building the incumbent iteration thereof ATM. (a decent kit with regard to accuracy & options; but the flash & visible age of the tooling make it clear why they haven't re-released the kit since the early 00's)

Hi Stephanie, I am surprised no one else has ever asked this before! 😆 Perhaps I am just your typical eccentric Englishman...The jacket, nice shirt and nice watches are just my sort of trademark when on camera...I am attempting to be 'upmarket' a little...Making a movie should be a special occasion and I want to be respectful to my audience. I definitely don't wear this stuff when I am building. 😜 Maybe I should wear a different suit next time? 🤔 (Do you watch 'The History Guy' on YT? He dresses very smartly too!) But I use the gloves as I am often handling other peoples kits or selling them on so want to preserve them as best I can without finger marks...and I don't have very attractive fingers. 😬

I did the navy version of this kit. The internals are way over engineered. They leave a horrible join seam the entire way through the intakes as they just dont fit together very well. I remember having some issues with the tail too. I just wish it was in 1/48

Have meant to add this for a few days: Turns out that when Matchbox released this kit in '73, Rovex-FROG had beaten them to it by a few months, with their S.MK-2A / S.MK-50 kit [No. F238]. The latter kit arguably had a better part layout, similar to later Airfix kits in how many parts form the fuselage, and having decent payload options. It appears that the kit remains the only one to feature a Honington Buccaneer paint scheme, and the first with the SAAF as an option: www.scalemates.com/products/img/1/0/0/168100-65-instructions.pdf Would be a fun topic for a future review; as from 1972 to 1989 Frog's was arguably The definitive Bucc' kit in 72nd scale. [somewhat ironically as the Frog didn't even survive the '70's ]

Given that Airfix's past 1/48 Buccaneer was top notch when new; I can see a retool being very popular if done.
