I like your confidence...build the wing and test it by twisting to its breaking point. Thanks for the work you are putting in. I'm enjoying the detail.
Really appreciate this episode as this is the stage I am at with my build and you made it clear what problems to look out for . One thing I found was regarding the main rib that has to be centralised , I noticed on the bottom part of the rig it had end locating lugs , so I glued them snug to begin with and then pull the rest of the wing up to rib and glue as I went , this not only centralised the rib but also pulled the wings up to their correct shape , just thought I would share in case other are having the issues you had with this kit . Keep up the good work with the videos Nigel .
Thanks for the kind words and the tip. It would appear that there are differing levels of shrinkage in the spar as some seem to fit perfectly and some are short, like mine?
I considering myself lucky with my particular kit as I don’t have the overhang on the leading edge of the wings or the large step between the fuselage and wings , I’m glad because I don’t have the skill set to cope with it as well as you do , which is why I’m grateful for your channel , and picking up loads of tips for my other builds all stacked up waiting to be started which include the mini base 1/48 Su-33 , takom 1/35 apache ah64d , tamiya 1/48 f35a , tamiya 1/32 f15 strike eagle , tamiya 1/32 f16 fighting falcon , tamiya 1/32 mosquito and my big build the 1/32 border models Lancaster , all of which I will be referring to your hints and tips , so keep up he good work Nigel I’m really enjoying your tutorials
Looking at other builds on RU-vid and even the published step-by-step guide by Stu Fone, nobody does a better job of getting into the nitty gritty of decision making and detailed process than you do Nige. For those of us looking to improve our skills, there's no better tutorial out there. The thought process behind the doing is gold dust.
Hi. Love your videos. At 34:05 I found if you sand and trim the belly of the fuselage a good amount around the stand attachment hole “I think that’s what it’s for “while fitting, before glueing all alignment problems go away. The wing edge height then falls into place. I also glued the reinforcements on the wings like you did. Hope this helps.
Thank you NMB amazing kit from airfix for pointing out the fuselage sequence super helpful great tips, Im sure lots of experienced people may have over looked these areas by trusting the sequences on instructions .
Thanks for consistently producing long, interesting regular videos Nigel. Thanks also for leaving in the ‘cluck ups’ that occasionally happen, it makes us all laugh together, it’s a lot more human that way.
Well...people love to complain. Back in the day I did level design work for Valve on Day of Defeat...some of the so-called "fans" used to complain the belt buckles and the straps on the German soldiers weren't perfect and it ruined the game for them. Every model has flaws and/or reduce detail to meet manufacturing and cost considerations...and most of us make flaws when we build. Solid build so far Nigel...starting mine soon.
The old saying says “You can please some people some of the time but, you’ll never please all of the people all of the time. Long or short videos is a decision only you can make based on the numbers that post about each version. All I can say is there are plenty of people producing short videos, but they basically gloss over most of the build to give you a 20 minute here’s a sprue, here’s a finished module all painted. I personally prefer you’re almost forensic deep dive into the minutiae of the kit and it’s issues and your way of solving those. A example of your detail is the ill fitting pipe on the engine bearer, no one else I’ve seen has found your simple solution. Perhaps it’s your engineering background? Your longer videos are never boring and always informative and educational. I hope you choose to continue in this fashion.
Exactly right Mark.. and.. if I fail to mention it there will be someone who who will comment... There's no doubt Rolls Royce gave me a wonderful education in the form of an apprenticeship.. a PROPER apprenticeship!!
Nigel, you run your work down too much!Terrific build.Got one in the post.Your videos will be a great help, and much appreciated!Dave from West Yorkshire.
Great content Nige, the video length is fine, people can skip to the end if they get fed up of watching, but you have to ask yourself why watch in the first place if you are going to do that. Oh, yeah put up a picture of Jess you mention her a lot but never show her...Have a great Christmas mate...hope Santa brings you some great models for us to see next year...Take care..
I believe that the belt had a red colour every fifth shell as they were as marking shell and also there were armour piercing shells. The point I’m trying to make is that there were different colours to the bullets and if you wished to, you van paint in this detail and thus making te actual shells more interesting. Just a thought.
Great video my friend the spitfire is looking amazing really enjoy your approach to your builds the problems you face you explain well and make it easy to understand what ever the video length I’ll be watching can’t wait to see what 2023 has installed have a great Christmas and new year 👍🙏
More terrific patient work, Nigel, bread and butter of assembling any kit which doesn't just fall together like a Tamiya (their MkiX 1/32 wing was so damn good) . The comment about don't drink and make models is probably sage advice. Certainly not Coors anyway lol! Engine rocker cover taper did look a bit keen in one of the views when you held it up. Hope that isn't too bad in reality when painted. Col
Hi Nigel. Thoroughly enjoyed this latest episode. I think I fall into the "happy with the length of video" camp. What I find fascinating is your whole process. I have never watched such a precise modeller so it's a treat to have your reasoning explained. It certainly appears to be paying dividends and admirable, keep it up. 👍
Looking great Nigel! Think it's great that the kit assembly seems to be following he actual assembly you see in period photos! Don't worry about the length of your videos, you'll never please everybody, carry on at your own pace, you're making great progress!
Merry Christmas Nigel, woof to Jess, as always it’s great to hear and see you talk through the issues and how you address them. IMO the more information I get the better my chances of me turning out a kit that won’t have to sit in a closet hidden from view. I appreciate the process you use. Can’t wait to get mine in the mail. Cheers mate and Happy Yule log 🪵 to you and yours.
Watched this section and then spent time looking at Spitfire photos. The wing root fairing joint seems to be very much over emphasised where it joins both the fuselage and the wing root, which is why you had to work on the root. SoI looked at the old Mk 1 Airfix 1/24th kit I have in the stash and the root fairing join to the fuselage is not a step. I begin to wonder if Airfix has got something wrong here.
Hi Nige. It was me who messaged you about the huge gap in the top manifold cover between the cylinder blocks. It threw the intercooler position out as well. Looking at your K sprue parts some of them definitely look cleaner than the same parts on mine.
@@NigelsModellingBench so do I! Not got that far yet. I'm adding all the fuel system pipes and linkages that aren't there. Tried to post a link to my Britmodeller build as there are snaps of the dodgy parts on there but RU-vid won't let me do it. Gorge work you've done so far though mate.
Absolutely spiffing videos Nigel old chap, tally ho… nothing boring about the videos length or otherwise. As you say it’s a plastic model, no one going to fly in it, it won’t need as air-worthiness certificate. Have the best Christmas, Nigel.
Nigel your videos are great. Keep doing what you’re doing. If I was wanting to glue closed all the gun access panels, do you think it would improve the overall alignment by omitting spars running front to back and just putting the guns in? Thanks
Hi Nigel, just one thing, you have referred to the 'landing light' in the port wing root a couple of times now, I think you will find that this is the location of the gun camera.
Looks a very vague way of constructing the wing, the Avro Anson looks to have a much better thought out wing building plan with a guaranteed accurate fit, I can see the average builder getting into trouble with this kit, keeping the coffee to hand is a must !☕
Quality Nige, like the way you get around things logically. Wishing you and your Mother and of course Jess a very happy Christmas. Ps, I hope you like your new chair. All the best. Kind regards, David from Inverness..
Hi Nigel got this kit for Christmas thoroughly enjoying watching your build , writing down all your little tips and will try to come somewhere close to your product. However I recently got the ICM 1/48 Spit IXc which is the same aircraft as the Airfix kit, with one exception. The armament consists of a 20mm and a .50 cal gun in each wing. Could you advise on which is the correct set up or were both used on this particular aircraft.
Been noticing the step(at times looks like small gap) at wing roots. Was curious how you would address it. As you know the Tamiya kit provides magnets for open closed options on some panels, not sure how practical as most will never go back to change it once built. Following along on the build, good tips and info for all those tackling the airfix spit.
How many hours on Spits Nigel?some say too many, some say just right.Your vlogs have made many shite-hawks to spring chickens in one easy lesson .Nige you will always be first of the few keep up the excellent videos.Merry Crimbo mate.
Hi Nigel - love your videos! Just a little thing I saw - are the ammunition boxes the right way round in the wings? If so - my mistake! Keep the videos coming! Happy Christmas!
Nigel. I am wondering if you might do the following…. The ammunition belts you showed you might try every fifth round could be red because it was standard procedure to indicate the phosphorus round with red!
@@NigelsModellingBench Perfect, Thank you. This Spitfire model is my inspiration to start making models after a 20 year long break and I want to do it right. Thank you.
Hi Nigel enjoying your videos from over here in Italy. I noticed that you were talking about the colour of the engine firewall. While doing a bit of research for a Spitfire build I came across this photo which might be of interest. i.pinimg.com/originals/6c/81/70/6c81708ba9a56e900a478d77b7fe46e6.jpg
