Airfix P-51D Mustang (Red Tails) - 1/72 Scale Plastic Model Kit - Build & Review 

I wonder what an "easy" colour scheme looks like to warrant a skill level 1 rating in your opinion? Maybe a factory fresh aircraft with no paint at all. We've been waiting decades for a really good Airfix Mustang such as this excellent kit. You obviously didn't research into your subject when you 'found' the extra holes under the wings, the same holes under the wings of your Mustang IV build (kit A55107) which came out after this kit A01004, otherwise you'd have known the Korean War F-51D version of this kit, A02047 has rocket rails which requires the holes to be opened. Also the instructions require Humbrol 226 as the interior colour.

I have the blue version of this kit, I agree its tiny parts require more skill than just a 1. Great job with the painting.

Nice video mate, I have just bought a Mystery Box from Airfix, Jan 2022, and this kit was included. My idea to get these kits was to get myself back into this type of modelling, gently....lol. The two other kits included are the Spitfire kit and a starter set of the F15. Thanks again and take no notice of rivet counters, we get them in the model railway lot too, there's always one.

That Humbrol polished Aluminium paint looks awesome, particularly because brushed on like you did. I'll give this Aluminium color a try on my Academy P-47 Thunderbolt with airbrush.

Enjoyed watching the build and the talk through, great build I'm seeing improvements each kit you build. Could you at some point show us where you display your built kits would love to see them.

Here's a little tip that can be done to make the metallic finish on any planes look more realistic. If you paint gloss black before painting the metallic. That will give a better depth to the metallic and it will come out looking more realistic like a real metallic aircraft. I love the finished result keep up the great work!

Airfix do make a rocket armed version: a later F-51, of the Korean war era. As this is a Tuskeegee Airmen version of the P-51, which pleased me tremendously on release, as those guys were literally awesome, should you include the pilot figure, remember to paint his face as an African American.

Nice model, maybe you could do this on the next one to ease painting and assembly: 1) Glue the propeller shaft to the retainer, let it dry, and then add the entire assembly to the fuselage, leaving the propeller off until the end. 2) Glue the landing gear, its doors and other ordnance at the very end, when the model has been decalled and varnished, it'll ease decalling and avoid any accidental breaking of the landing gear. 3) For NMF/red/yellow models, brush some coats of white as a primer, and then paint the upper camouflage, you'll need less paint to cover the area that way (I brushed four coats of white on my P-51D and got a nice results).

Airfix has really stepped up from the previous models, in my opinion There are the most Affordable Kits. They were really Deep Down In The Model community for some years ago, but now they are really good😀

Awesome work buddy! Now I notice that come of the color callouts in your video appear to be different from the instructions but as I read from another comment you simply used the colors you had on hand; and that is perfectly fine as not everyone (especially beginners) have a full set of all Humbrol/Revell/Tamiya/etc paints available (that would also get quite expensive very quickly). One thing I would note though is that in the end-scene where Maverick is flying with Penny you can see that the headrest is not there and Penny is sitting in a second seat behind him. As such I would have personally cut off the headrest from the seat model and remove the fueltank that's behind the seat. This would give you enough room to add a second seat for the passenger. If you don't have a spare seat lying around then there are other options like 3D-printing, making one from scratch, or even going oldschool and making a mold of the original seat and then using resin or self-hardening clay. That way you would have had an awesome model that could even allow Maverick to fly around with a second character painted to look like Penny. 🙂

I really want to get the same results as you, but I’m missing paints and techniques such as blending decals into the model kit itself which makes it look realistic.

Just a general thought for all videos.. maybe links for the tools / supplies you use Matt such as the masking tape?

the kit numbered A02047 came with rockets.

I’m building this model but the decals are nothing like the video or the box instruction. Is this norm ? Also fully agree the undercarriage is not the best fit-ups and very fragile. Also prop, very weak I replaced its shaft with a short piece of 1.6mm rod and a extra bulkhead to support it

The molds on this kit look very similar to the 1:48 scale version.

Those extra holes are for the mach8ne gun shell ejection not rockets

What number is the polished aluminium.

the green looks a bit weird it is kinda dark but overall the aircraft looks great.

My instructions mention parts that I can't find on any of the sprues. Yes I have the same kit as in the video

Huh? My manual called out humbrol 226 for the cockpit and wheel well colour airfix must have changed it.

If you use a sketching pencil that is black is that close enough to a pastel

Just FYI, red is best painted over a yellow undercoat.

Absolutely always wash your kit before building it.

I'm building this one and it's turning out to be a mess the damn interior piece that goes between the two half fuse pieces I got it in perfect but it's holding up the fuse from going together and now I got epoxy on the seams that I had to wipe up cus so had to use two clamps to get the pannels together no matter what I did with interior I still couldn't get the half's to go together that easy I normally build cars and this is my first plane and if they all like this then it's my last plane I'm building
