The movie was presented on the airfix advent calender as well. A very good tool delivered by the kit are the guides for the struts to reach the right angle for assembling. Everything fits very well and it's a beautiful and well designed little kit.
I used different enamel humbrol colours for the bases, coated it with alclad II aquabased coat and artist oil colour for the weathering effects. Different alclad II metalls (alu, copper, steel) popped up the detailed engine to life ;-)
Hope you enjoy this little assembling clip... Tom

Ah, a blast from the past (at least for me) as RU-vid pushed this into my "Must watch" list. I have probably watched all of your amazing videos from the past 2 years, but hadn't gone this far back. Anyway, I love it... such an amazing build especially given the scale. And now I'm going to check out Airfix WWI planes in 1/72.. something I haven't done to date. Cheers!

Superb. I am amazed that you have been able to apply rigging to that level of detail, including to the control surfaces - on a 1:72 scale model! I have struggled badly to make a simple Airfix Hannover CL3a, even the thought of rigging it is beyond me. Definitely subscribing to this channel, I need to try and learn more about how you achieve such wonderful results :-)

I'm glad you like my work - yes, I preshaded with a brown pencil. That day I tried a different way. My favorite primers are white, grey and black from alclad II. Their usage depends on the next steps. Here I used the white one.

Would it be possible for you too show how you paint the wooden interior? I know that the airfix kit doesn't mold grain into the fuselage, yet your's come out extremely nicely.
@TomGrigat
@TomGrigat 6 лет назад
I'm glad you like it. I used wood grain decals from "Uschi van der Rosten" for the simulation - like I did it for my Gotha Projekt from Roden. Here you might get a better impression how I did it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x_ZIQdA04-M.html I normally take alu foil, press it with toothpicks at the different corners and edges to get the shape of the wood area I need. Thanks I take the foil as a shape guide and cut out the specific decals according to it. The background will be painted with wood colour first and accentuate with darker colour after. When dried the decals could be placed...

Very nice video here. It is interesting that it seems that you put the wing struts on the underside of the top wing first. I have a few questions if you don't mind please: First of all at around 0:27 in the video, what is that neat little grey device called that you are using to help fix the struts in place? Also regarding the rigging, how did you secure the rigging thread to this underside of the top wing, around the struts. Were they just superglued? What fabric do you use for the rigging also please? Thank you very much.
@TomGrigat
@TomGrigat 8 лет назад
Thank you for your request. The little "helper", I used for the struts, is part of the airfix kit and is the best tool I've every been supported with! My order of assembling is exactly how the plan shows: first fixing the struts on the top wing, placing the rigging ... I drilled 0.3 mm holes in the wings, placed the rigging material and glued it with cyanoacrylate. The rigging material I used is "Rig that thing" from "Uschi van der Rosten". It's some kind of very tiny flexible rubber material which holds it's tension during the assembling process and after. I use it for every rigging purposes in 3 different sizes. Here you can see how I used it for a 1:32 model: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pRh3P-QOLT0.html And this may be a useful tutorial for rigging such a plane: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bUgLd0gU_rg.html But have in mind turnbuckles and eyelets I used are too big for 1:72 scale; best 1:48 and higher. I hope I've answered your questions ;-)
@RobinHood5045
@RobinHood5045 8 лет назад
Thank you. It's good that this little prop comes with the Airfix kit. I thought I did not see eyelets and turnbuckles on this model also, thank you. Regarding the 0.3mm holes that you drilled, did you drill part of the way through the wing, or all the way through to the other side? Thank you.
@TomGrigat
@TomGrigat 8 лет назад
Best is you drill only little holes - not through the wing. Fill the hole with a tiny drop of superglue (use an applicator, f.e. sewing needle with opened eyelet) and place the tip of the thread in the hole. Other way: you drill the holes through the wings, drag the threads through the holes, fix it and cover it with putty at last. After sanding it in the needed shape you're ready to paint... But this is not the best way for a beautiful model ;-)
@RobinHood5045
@RobinHood5045 8 лет назад
And (sorry for these many questions) what is the name of the drill that you use for these tiny holes please? Is it a Tamiya Fine Pin Vice? Thank you.
@TomGrigat
@TomGrigat 8 лет назад
No problems ;-) The drill is from the DIY superstore, stainless steel, 10 drills for appr. 7 Euros. I use a brace for it.
