Josh Withers is no stranger to BMW airheads. After building his own 1973 BMW Cafe, Josh was commissioned to build one in a similar vein for someone he never met, except through countless phone calls and emails. After two years of obsessing over every detail of this 1972 BMW R75/5, Josh completed the project and finally met what he considers his modern-day "pen pal". Josh, a photographer by day, spent many hours through nights and weekends breathing life back into this airhead that was considered dead. Like many who currently have or had a project of their own, Josh gives us insight into what keeps him obsessing, creating, and building. Ride tastefully.

This video when it was released 6 years ago had a very deep impact on me. I was 18 at the time. And now i’m happy to say that I have my very own ‘71 R75/5 that I will be building. The bike is stripped and engine is out. It’s rebuild time.

Good on you brother. There's something magical about creating something with your own hands for someone else that shares your enthusiasm. I watched my brother pick up a bike he had built for a friend of ours that came into a significant amount of money. Our friend was letting the completely hand built bike rust underneath a tree. My brother said, "this bike is like my child, it deserves better than this. He can have his money back."

I just discovered this site, this was the first video I watched. Beautiful bike, I love the sound of a smooth running twin, I'm not a Harley hater but that split fork rod design just isn't for me. Never had much money growing up so I rode what I could afford to fix, BMW's seemed to be always just a little fatter than my wallet. For years I rode a 1980 Kawasaki KZ 750 Twin I bought brand new (an upgrade from the Honda 400 I had), I really liked this bike, torquey and reliable, it was one of the last twins made, the 750 4 cylinders had already been introduced and they had stopped making the twins. To this day I regret having sold it.
10 лет назад
Josh, I think that the work done on that bike was no less than increidible, congratulations and keep on the good work, perhaps some day I will make a question or two if possible.

Very nice and clean and free of gimmakry. I had a '76 R90/S. Sold that 15 years ago and bought a '76 Moto Guzzi V1000 I Convert. Taking that down to tiny bits currently with the aim of personalizing it. Not sure if it will really be all that "custom" but that depends on certain decisions I make. At any rate i love the bike and am retired from a career steel fabricating and figure my skill set and this bike to be a good match.

I watched this bike come together bit by bit while I was struggling to get two airheads with sitting disease on the road. Reading the latest post every day or two was great and inspiring. I appreciate all the extra time it took to post the progress, and all the feedback from other owners and experts and even the occasional hater. I'm glad to see it on the road. I hope Shane rides the piss out of it. Mine will never look as good though. That is, not in my lifetime.

Hi Josh, I have just watched your video of the stunning R75/5 you resurrected. I feel we have a lot in common as I too have dabbled myself over the years including the building of a Suzuki TR500 race replica. My day job bore no resemblence to my love of motorcycles also. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OS4nxUVDbEM.html More recently my Son and I restored a Series IIA Land Rover ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i5LiykP3UU0.html It was not practical for us to keep any of the projects I have done over the years but three years ago I retired and at 63 am scratching for something to do. My pal Roger who is a BMW specialist was instrumental in the Suzuki project and keeps prompting me to take away some R75/5 parts and start building again. I have pondered the thought for some time now but I think your project has given me the inspiration to get myself back into gear. Would you mind if I called on your expertise as I go and perhaps you could refer me to some of your contacts if I struggle here in the UK?

Tree-Food ~ That's going fairly off the limb ! After 2 years of judicious attention to every edge,I suspect even to the point of watching and listening to the bike on film, chances are Josh has seen and re-thought every detail, hence, maybe even approving of 'flappy-plate'.... that's not to say when you contract Josh to sculpt your next project,he's likely succume to you're pressure regarding stiffening up the plate/light . Remember this is an art piece and art is up to the painter ! ~ Correction .. this is my feeling, from what I later read, after writing this .... Josh felt as you do.. funny ! I'm surprised !
