Airlander crash lands after second flight

"The Story of Airlander" is now available free to watch on Amazon Prime via the following link: www.amazon.co.uk/The-Story-of... or available on DVD or Bluray at: sparksflymedia.co.uk/the-stor... (and the filming is better quality than mine!)
Full video of Airlander, coming in to land after its second flight, crash landing at the end. Footage after the crash is very shaky, the shock of seeing her come down, and concern for the pilots, who luckily walked away unharmed.

The sudden loss of hight at the front looks like the gas that lifts the blimp got imbalanced and shifted to the back. Nice work getting the pic Angela (in 2016). Lots of tips coming through which is helpful. Two from me: best not to zoom - you may not like what you see - and secondly, find something or someone to lean on - who knows what may transpire and to miss it or mess it up may be a significant loss, not least to incident investigators. Ground effect, local weather conditions and very indirect controls make this a difficult thing to pull off reliably and safely. Without a way to transition from buoyant to thrust or lift driven flight, these will remain a curiosity at least on this planet. Variable buoyancy designs exist but share the same weakness of poor control authority and wind intolerance. Simple solution. Fire grapplers at the ground, have them burrow/anchor (robotically) and reel the ship in levelly using software to keep it balanced as you compress your helium or vent/exchange hot air.
@madbikerchick1
@madbikerchick1 4 года назад
There wasn't a problem with the ship, it was the mooring mast. Had that been functioning correctly, there would have been no problem, as the ship made a safe landing; the mooring mast had a fault, so the craft took off again, as it flew round, the mooring line inside the ship came loose and hung down, the ship had to come in far higher than previously to prevent the line from dragging on the ground.
@largol33t1
@largol33t1 4 года назад

The Airlander is now going into production. I believe they are starting on building production facilities this year (2020), as the Cardington sheds are not big enough. The production model is also longer than the prototype seen here. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-51032891 Thank you for posting this, it gives a good view of what happened. Better than other clips that I have seen.

Thank you, and yes, production craft will be of a slightly different design; the company are hoping to produce a fully electric vehicle within 5 years. Cardington airfield is gradually being turned into a housing estate, which is a disgrace.

How to film something about to happen... 1) point the camera at the thing that's about to happen. 2) dont move the camera once it starts happening!

Seems like vertical thrusters like a ship’s azipod or bow thruster would be handy. For Christmas maybe 360 degree cameras.

It's a prototype, guess the next build will see improvements, and there are plans to build an entire electric vehicle.

I dont understand why not use a computerized system with some form of gyros, sensors and feedback to control fan thrust and angle to keep the craft level and steady.
