From our friends accross the pond who perfected the term 'service' first on ships followed by trains then finally pioneering it into the air!
British Caledonian formed from and acquisition of British United Airways by British supplemental/charter carrier, Caledonian Airways.
I mistakenly always believed BCAL created Caledonian after the British Airways takeover. I had no idea that BCAL was a mere 17 years old at it's end. All I knew is I'd have all the time in the world to fly them because BCAL was the British 'TWA' to the British 'Pan Am' that of course being British Airways. I wasn't all that interested in BCAL until I saw a BCAL 747 at San Diego..what a Regal looking plane! A few years later while shooting at LAX, I met a BCAL DC-10 pilot, a really nice guy...but he trashed the 747 too much to my liking.
So now let's have a good look back at (from what I heard) a great airline as far as service was concerned, but I like presenting that majestic fleet of theirs!
Another great one from the United Kingdom!

I worked for BCal for six years at LGW, No day was ever standard as each shift brought new situations, drama's and challenges. I remember meeting one particular flight from Tripoli. As I drove the jetty onto the aircraft, I had two or three cops waiting next to me. I asked them why they were there and they told me a passenger who'd drank too much had been touching up the hosties. Once I'd put the jetty on, I stood back while the passengers disembarked. After the last of them had left, two of the cops (one a woman) came off the aircraft, 'helping' the drunk passenger. He was well tanked up and was grinning like a Cheshire cat as he gleefully fondled the police woman's breasts as he was escorted off. To her credit she just gently brushed his hand away but it returned after a few seconds. He knew he was going to chokey so must have thought 'In for a penny....' Just another day at work.

This is OUTSTANDING! Scenes on video, I never thought I would ever see. BCAL WAS Gatwick. The sight of the DC-10's lined up and you knew you were at London's second airport. This was when Gatwick was an airport worth visiting, when the DC-10 ruled and I had some of the best days of my life chasing these great planes. The BCAL A320, I am sure footage does exist though from news crews. One of the saddest sights, I saw was the last BCAL 747 postioning at Heathrow to be painted into BA livery in April 1988.

@@Starboard76 Thanks SB. Worth mentioning, when BA acquired BCAL they fell in love with their DC-10's and wished they bought some in the 70's. In the end (1999) BA did not want to part with the DC-10 as it was such a great plane for them.
@susansinclair4914

I left the year before BA took over but heard from ex-workmates who had been selected as good enough for 'Airways' that whereas they'd loved working for BCal, they now hated life at BA as they were treated as second class people. Eventually, from memory, most of them dropped out one by one.

Agreed. The British American Club out of San Jose, CA flew their charters out of Oakland. The refuelling stop on the way over and the way back was Gander, Newfoundland. And then we were off to Gatwick. I think🤔. I’m 68 now. The memory ain’t what it used to be.

@@MrFlashjet Absolutely, they kept the best wide-body trijet. By far DC-10 was more capable than L-1011

Pretty sure that was an Airbus A310. The A320s were painted in BA colours before delivery. G-BUSB was painted over the BCal livery as you could see the indentation in the tail..

BAC 111 hush kitted, can you imagine how it sounded before? As a ground mechanic before my flying time, we had been called for assistance on 707 cargo a few times, at Athens. One, was coming from Nairobi, just for fuel, had hit a bird on take off, #3 engine I recall, which operated normally, so they continued. At walk-around the f/e saw the damage and called us. Eng was damaged, fan blades where , plus the awful smell of bird guts. It's legs were stuck in the stator vanes, and by the size it was either a stork or a flamingo! Needless to say aircraft had an engine change....

@@Starboard76 Yeah , many technical landings they are called. For the 2 year period, I was on ground 76-78, I belonged mainly, to a team handling foreign airlines. It was quite an experience . Some were on contract with Olympic, others like B Cal, on call only.

Another superb video! Flew on British Caledonian a few times, only on their BAC 111 from AMS to LGW. I never thought I would see a Western Airlines DC10 there at 10:31. A very short lived service from HNL-LGW! I also remember flying on British United, before they became British Caledonian. Fantastic memories! Cheers, Carl

I still have a flight schedule from this airline which I think I had picked up at DFW airport when I was through there years ago. I'd go to ticket counters in my travels wheather I'd fly or drive & visit an airport to pick up flight schedules from various Airlines.

Same here, all that data formed a completed puzzle on what this whole thing was all about. Just at first glance, I'd think Northwest Orient had 747s arriving at least 20 times a day at MSP and DTW. Then you look closer and that image is corrected, much of those flights are connectors tying into about 3-5 actual ops a day. Tokyo saw more of the fleet than any other destination.

Now that would be a sight to see, a BCAL DC-10 at SJU! I spent a week there, love the place. shot up the airport but traffic was so so. I did get an Iberia DC-10 there, but catching a BCAL there would have been cool!

I only saw it at sju once. Parked at the terminal. In the eighties I lived in Santo Domingo, and I would fly from Sd to sju on Eastern Airlines , and at sju transfer to BWIA airlines to go to Barbados. Great days they were. No way you could do that now. In those days. Sju was a very busy airport. All kinds of airlines went there. Not so today. Take care
