If you search "airline customer service dashboard department of transportation", you can see your rights by the airline for delays and cancellations nicely summarized.

Also - if no flights available, the airline will pay for lodging and round trip transportation to hotel until next available flight

Former US Airways employee, and she definitely hit the nail on the head. I use the same thing if i run into flight issue's.

Just an FYI. Southwest does not purposely overbook flights as other airlines do. Look it up

Why isn’t it mandatory for airlines to compensate automatically? If they fail to inform the customer they should be fined additional money so it hurts. That’s the only way to get rid of these shady practices.

Everyone who flies often should know this! And if everyone knew and did this, the airlines WOULD STOP THEIR PRACTICE OF OVERBOOKING.

This seems like the kind of thing that you try in real life and they just ask you to leave, you insist you know the law, the cops show up, you tell them what happened, they tell you to calm down, you get thrown on the ground, arrested and taken to jail.

That’s right. Used to work for an airline and they have to compensate. Normally they oversell flights. Those who paid cheapest are bumped from the flight. People are nothing but a number to them.

YEP! This happened to me. They immediately compensated me and rebooked me. I was still pretty pissed I had to wait another 4hrs 😂😂😂

As a pilot for a major airline I'm blown away how many don't understand the contract. It's really not hard to read etc. Good job. The wrong thing here is once you receive compensation they don't owe you the transportation anymore. You would be required to buy that fare.

They do this overbooking on trains in Wales all the time. Every time I take a train on weekends there will be people standing, sitting in the floor or lying near the toilets. And no compensation or whatsoever - the train company says “we don’t sell the tickets, go to ticket selling app”, ticket selling app - “we don’t provide the service, we just sell tickets, go to train for Wales”. I’m so furious after each train trip I need to take.

Good consumer advice! Most consumers don't know their legal rights, & neither do most of the sales people. This type of advice should be mandatory viewing! Three cheers! 👏👏👏 😁

We got this once on vacation to Cancun. The airline tried to get volunteers with travel vouchers, and when none volunteered, we got called up. Conversation literally went like this: Gate Agent: So we're bumping you off the flight, you can either voluntarily get bumped, and get a $600 voucher, or not volunteer. Me (confused): Ok... so what happens if we DON'T volunteer? Gate Agent: We then have to pay you 4x the cost of your ticket. Me: I DO NOT volunteer! My wife and I walked away with a cheque for over a grand each in our pockets, and vacation was only delayed 4 hours. Basically spent a week in Cancun for free. We felt like we won the lottery, lol.

Who buys a plane ticket and then doesn't show up?

I don't fly and I don't ever want to fly. It's not because I suffer from acrophobia, claustrophobia and smelly people phobia. My question is why do they overbook a flight so much? If it's going to cost them all this money and aggravation. If they booked a flight to capacity and some people don't show up for the flight and miss it. That's on them. 🤔

It depends on the airlines. Frontier is the worst. Had a really bad experience last year with them. Two days waiting for a flight. They only gave me flight credits..

They don't give in this easy. Unless you're loudly fighting with the agent causing a scene and maybe getting security called on you, you're usually on a 1 hour hold trying to get that extra dough

EU has been doing this for years, and at a much higher compensation. Once had a flight canceled from NYC to ROM after we already boarded. Was given a direct flight the next morning, comped hotel room, and compensation which covered the entirety of the vacation.

This also depends on the airlines specific policies and country regulations. I worked customer support for a Latin American airline and the rules and laws used for overbooking were different. Also, they will do anything possible to avoid paying you. It's literally a last resort and the airport always offers the lowest possible compensatio, which isnalso legally binding. If you accept the compensation offered at the airport, you can't request for more comp directly with rhe airline.

But the airlines would be still like “I can’t do that for you. I just can’t.” Even if you say “can I talk to your manager?” They would be still like “I can’t do that.”

Selling more tickets than you have seats should be illegal. It would avoid situations like this

"Over 2-hour arrival delay = 400% of one-way fare price up to $1,550" Yet, the people who boarded a plane at their scheduled time, and took off, and got put in a holding pattern for 4 hours due to "weather"; get nothing.

The airway employee will stand there and argue with you and tell you how wrong you are. There's no way it ends this smoothly.

I tried this at Jet Blue. I'm still sitting at the airport with no money and all the employees just laughed at me.

Actually, what happens now is she gets put on the plane and someone else gets bumped.

I wish I know before, I couldn't show up at my grandpa's funeral because an overbooked flight, the airline didn't even give back the $700 that I paid for the ticket, it was a horrible experience 😢

It’s disingenuous of the airline not to offer the compensation up front. Why does the customer have to try to figure it out?

Real life situation : nobody is at the counter to attend you or whatsoever

There's a guy who made buying tickets on overbooked flights a living. He knew when the airlines were busiest, he would volunteer to de-plane and get the compensation. I'm amazed the airlines didn't black book him.

You are also entitled to free food since you were delayed.

It’s true. Flying home from Reno, a two hour flight. I volunteered to change flights and flew home 3 hours later and they handed me a check for $927

Just remember that there are many exceptions too. My favorite is if there is an equipment change or safety issue, you are entitled to NO compensation - even if involuntarily denied.

The thing Erika isn't telling you is that the airline will never tell you you were bumped because they oversold the flight and everyone showed up.

So this is why tickets are so expensive.

Print up the rules or save it as a favourite on your phone. So you can have the info immediately available when arguing with the airlines.

So this is why they announce at the gate deals of lesser value to fix their issue. “Any takers to be on the next flight for a first class upgrade?” It’s costs the airline nothing and the unsuspecting person takes it without asking for anything more.

"No ma'am, the flight was canceled... ...for you only."

They literally get on the loudspeaker and start offering money to give up your seat. I've seen them go 5X cost of ticket, and they give you another flight

Steady… stare at the camera… don’t let them see you reading the teleprompter… convince everyone that confrontational disagreements are best resolved WITHOUT eye contact… there ya go! Now you can get that job hosting home improvement infomercials on your local cable access station.

Just because you know the rules/policies, doesn't mean that they will just cave and give you what you tell them to give you. I'd be nothing short of astonished if this scenario ever played out like this for anyone. I mean MAYBE once, or twice... But certainly not en masse.

This absolutely happened to me as well and I did not even have to ask. They let me know it was their fault and I received a check for 3 times the cost of my ticket and a hotel room for the night and a voucher for the hotel restaurant since my new flight would not leave until the next morning

Everyone that doesn't Google what they deserve when being denied a paid service doesn't care about their money.

This is the exact situation that I found myself in with Delta, claimed my rights with about 8 different people at the desk and over the phone but no luck until I emailed them.... now fighting for $600 with a $280 transaction fee. They were so mean to me even though I was so patient.

My family left a family reunion early, because we had to catch our flight home. The flight ended up being cancelled, and they not only had to put us up in a hotel for the night, with meal vouchers, but also gave us round trip airfare! We were a family of 11! I’ve also gotten additional tickets for my daughter, and myself, because a flight was delayed for over two hours, while we waited on board for repairs. I just quietly handed the flight attendant a note, saying how I wanted to be compensated! Know your rights!

Good luck with that. Had a 10 hour mechanical delay overnight at MSP, had to sleep in the airport. All I got was 8700 free air miles

No way this happens so easily. Lawyers have to get involved.

They did this on my flight, they kept asking for volunteers, at one point they were offering 800$ + your flight fare + the next flight which was only 2 hours later

Probably the best advice I’ve heard recently, and I don’t even fly often.

It's not a secret. It's right on The Dept. of Transportation's website. Involuntary bumping isn't that common. The airlines usually get enough volunteers before it gets to that point. Don't get too excited about cashing in.

The way you force a smile through every word you say is wholly lacking in genuine behavior

The terms should be mandatory for the airlines to follow, not for the customer to know all laws and rights for every thing in life. Make airlines follow the terms or airline gets hefty fines. Simple.

This whole speech is foiled when the employee says “too bad”

This actually does work. Happened to me years ago and I researched because I was upset. I got over 2k, and free transportation and hotel for the night and transportation back to the airport. I told the gate and they right away have me a slip to take to somewhere close by and they gave me the check right away and got me to a hotel to sleep for my free flight the next morning

The opposite is also true for getting an earlier flight that is underbooked from that of a fully booked flight to the same destination, you get additional baggage space at a reduced coast and no additional fees.

Airlines are like anything just because your Amazon package is a week late doesn't mean you should get compensated. It is what it is

Also, remember People that they might also be responsible depending on how long to put you up in a hotel to give you food vouchers and if your luggage is also stuck somewhere to also compensate you for clothing, and what not make sure to read the terms. Also, many banks and credit cards and insurance also covers which you can double dip in in a lot of circumstances had a 12 hour delay before in Denver because they made us miss the flight and then the following flight was overbooked so not only did my spouse Myself get back nearly $4000 in ticket fees but we also got put up in a hotel and food vouchers and for our luggage Total about five grand and luckily for us didn’t mess up anything schedule wise for us since it was coming back from vacation so all in all with the additional almost $2000 in insurance with our travel policy we got a total of $6000 that essentially paid for our initial tickets And our entire vacation with about $700 left over in profit with about 15 hours of inconvenience and hours of inconvenience so so completely worth it

Don't forget, you can also claim flight delay insurance from the credit card used to purchase the ticket.

This conversation literally never happens between a customer and an airline. yes they rebook you, but they dont say "there's nothing else we can do". they will completely offer up the compensation on their own, you dont even have to mention it.
