The problem with parodies is that they are really hard to do right. With a parody you don't deliver the joke the way you would in a normal movie. Parody has to be deadpan and serious in the delivery. That's why this movie is so great. Instead of using comedians that would have delivered the jokes the way a comedian would, they used serious dramatic actors who delivered their lines they way a serious actor does. That's why this works so well.

Also, where it says "Any similarities to real people" etc it ends with "So there!" The two jive speaking dudes wrote their own dialog. The two intercom people that are arguing about the red zone and the white zone are actually married and were actual airport announcers back in the day. This movie is based on another movie called "Zero Hour" and in several areas is a shot-for-shot parody. Here's a comparison: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8-v2BHNBVCs.html and even though they were not required to get permission (since it is protected as being a satire or parody of an established work, allowed under trademark laws) they officially bought the rights from the Zero Hour studio for $2500.

When the Doctor is giving Ted the pep talk about George Zipp -- this is a direct reference to the 1940s movie "Knute Rockne, All American" in which Ronald Reagan played a Notre Dame football player named George Gipp who in one scene is dying in a hospital bed. He tells his coach to tell the rest of the team to "win one for the Gipper," and the Doctor's speech is pretty much word-for-word from that scene. Also, the music playing when Striker gets up and says "I've got a plane to land" is the Notre Dame fight song.

Airplane is a parody of a 1950s movie called Zero Hour and the 1970s series of airplane disaster movies. The first of that series was Airport. The 70s was full disaster movies: Earthquake, the Towering Inferno and Airport. Each had a plethora of major stars. Airplane does too: Lloyd Bridges (dramatic actor), Robert Stack (dramatic actor, hosted Unsolved Mysteries), Leslie Nielsen (comedic actor, later played in Naked Gun), Peter Graves (dramatic actor, was in the original Mission Impossible TV show) and Kareem Abdul Jabar (basketball legend).

When my friends and I were just in our teens We did Super 8 skits in homage to this movie...one time we had set up a pool side cafe where two people are having a conversation as kids were playing basketball behind them and overthrew their shots. The guys at the table gave their drink order (one asked for coffee and one said he'll 'just have tea') and carried on their conversation when a basketball came into frame, bounced hard on their table and off between them---without flinching or stopping their talk, then their order came...coffee and a styrofoam letter'T'. Do "Top Secret!" and "Hot Shots." They're both really similar to this movie as far as the humor goes. The first one is a parody of WWII/Spy movies and the second a parody of "Top Gun." I think the more recent movies that tried to do this kind of humor ended up fucking up the writing because many of the jokes stopped being jokes and became references to something else and that was it. Instead of some clever wordplay or setup, it's just "Oh, look at Jack Sparrow pop up for no reason because when this movie was made his movies were really popular" and crap like that. The genius of "Airplane!" is not only the writing, but the fact that they deliberately mostly hired actors who weren't comedians and told them to play the movie completely straight, which only added to the absurdity. I remember being a kid and watching this for the first time and being really surprised at the pilot who does the Ham On Rye Hold The Mayo joke and the inappropriate creepy questions to the kid during the flight, because previous to this I knew him as the hero for the original "Mission: Impossible" TV show.

Aww wow saw it coming the whole time, going; NOOOOOO don't drink NOW!!! This movie has so many gags, that you can watch it a 100 times and still catch jokes you missed before. You didn't have the scene in your reaction, but the old lady who translates the jive talk for the stewardess is Barbara Billingsly, who is most famous for playing June Cleaver on the classic tv show Leave it to Beaver. Which if you haven't seen that and or don't know who Wayne Brady is I highly recommend checking out the sketch after you know who he is!!! Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer and Kung Pow: Enter the Fist are hilarious Kung Fu parodies I know you'll love. @r0kus
@r0kus 3 года назад
I'm glad you can still enjoy 90% of this film. There were some cultural references that enhanced the movie to many viewers when it came out in 1980. First the taxi passenger was a cameo by Howard Jarvis, a wealthy California leading proponent of Proposition 13, which had set a hard limit on property taxes. So there he was, known for his stinginess, sitting with the taxi meter running. And many adults would recognize the plane's captain, Peter Graves, as the friendly adult figure on two Saturday morning live action series, _Fury_ (horses) and _Sky King_ (small plane pilot). So to see this wholesome man asking the boy about seeing a grown man naked, or whether he likes gladiator movies, added a lot to the humor. Of course today, they could never get away with jokes like that on even a PG-13 movie. The last I'll mention is Barbara Billingsley, the white wholesome mother on _Leave It to Beaver_ is the lady who talked jive with the black guys.
