Switched to the XM5s from AirPods 2. I find the XM5 sound quality, audio upscaling, battery life, and multipoint connectivity, are much better than the AirPods 2.
1:56 A lot of people still have charging infrastructure based on USB-A. It's wasteful and prohibitively expensive to ditch all of that while the existing system still works. You can buy a USB-C to USB-C cable if you want.
People don't get how hard it is to develop earbuds that fit such a diverse set of people. Everyone has different ears and it's impossible to have a one-pair-fits-all situation. Absolutely fair to buy the ones that fit your ears because at that point, nothing else matters!

I have the WF-1000XM5 and I love them. Every generation of XMs just keeps getting better - as you would expect. That said, my XM4s are still fantastic also!
@@duyminh9686 Here are a few. There are a lot of videos about this. "As far as XM4 VS XM5... The new ones are much smaller and fit more comfortably. They no longer have the massive microphone sticking out of the side. Despite the mic being smaller, they now use AI to help improve your voice and cut out wind noise. It's much better! The driver has increased from 6.4mm to 8.4mm which allows them to move the diaphragm less and decrease the overall size of the earbuds. Plus, they have improved controls allowing you to control volume, playback, and sound modes without pulling out your phone. Quite a few changes generation over generation!"

My XM4s of 2 years started suffering from battery drain issues in June after a recent update. They're being sent back to Sony for FREE replacement. My XM5s should be here on Tuesday, 1 August.
As much as I also want companies to include c to c cables, it does make more sense for them to include c to a when it’s significantly more likely for consumers to own A chargers already since they’re not including chargers in the box. At least for now while we’re still in the transitional period (thanks Apple..)
Here's the thing. It's companies sticking with type-A that slows us down. Apple was one of the very first to jump to Type-C and has steadfastly included it on every product for years. Even iPhone doesn't have Type-A sticking around, just the 10+ year old Lightning port. The cable itself is USB-C. Macs are USB-C. iPads USB-C. Not a single USB-A port to be found. Sony included Type-A because it is slightly cheaper. Yes Type-A stuff is still around but we can;'t still be including it on new products. This product will be available for at least a couple years, all with a dead connector.
@@HSNG10 You're wrong. Both the cable and the port are Type-C. One is a male connector, the other female. But if companies still send out USB-A cables there is no motivation for users to move to Type-C
@@AppleInsiderType A to Type C cable has absolutely no price difference at that scale, it's not the reason. You should understand that you live in an Apple bubble and Sony has to consider a lot wider audience. Their data shows that for now this is the correct cable. They will change to c to c when it's time. As an anecdote, my absolutely top tier business laptop from two years ago has two usb c ports and two usb a ports. My five years old desktop doesn't have any usb c ports. Of all of my chargers only two are usb c and the rest are a. I consider myself to be at least in the top 20% new tech adopters (just not Apple), and even I prefer that they have a to c cable for now (although I'll probably be using qi anyway).
Does the multi connect work properly? I have the Sony headphones XM4 and it never works properly, even though my laptop lid is closed, nothing is playing, and I play media on my phone it often will still show connected to the laptop and then I have to open up the app to disconnect the laptop, it's hella annoying and others have had this issue

Does anyone know how I put my new pair of Sony WF-1000XM5 in pairing mode? I used to hold both sensors for around 5 seconds on my WF-1000XM4, but this does not work on my XM5s.
I actually disagree, Usb type c to type a is a vastly superior option in the current market. Most computers still use them as the primary USB type. If you were looking for a wall outlet adaptor, most people would probably find a type a first, as well as type a even becoming a standard socket n outlets. I'm sure there might be a charging advantage for type c to type c, but practicality it won't be the better option. On a side note, my mark 4's charging case lasts over a week with 5 days of usage with on/off charging or one earbud becoming drained. I was seriously impressed with its ability to hold a charge.
Maybe on Android, not on iOS. At least not in the traditional sense. I had to open the Sony headphones app where it appeared on the list of nearby devices, I tap the case with my phone to authenticate, then you choose it from the popup menu of Bluetooth devices. You do tap, but it still requires additional taps to happen.
I’ve never used the AirPods Pro or any AirPods. I was tempted to and ran into a sound engineer who recommended the Sonys and I was blown out of the water. Of course curiosity killed the cat and I returned them and picked up some Bose ultras, which right off the bat sounded terrible. Too much heavy base with drowned out the sound of the music. So I returned those and went back with the Sony, but I am tempted to try that AirPod pros.
Do NOT update the firmware of your XM4s to the latest. I'm getting rapid battery drain now. i reddit that the update potentially fries the battery. I've ordered replacement batteries for $20 (/must be 3.85v 75mAh). So we'll see. By the way these survived an entire run in the washing machine a few years ago when I left them in my jeans. no issue with drain or functionality. tremendous build quality by Sony. I had the Airpod Pro 2s. The sound wasnt as deep, rich, warm as rhe XM4. You can get a ton of used XM4 now for like $99 or less. The Liberty Pro 2 from Soundcore can also hang with both the Sony and Apple on sound quality and those you can get new for less $90.
How do you change the battery on the XM4? I already updated the firmware, so too late. BTW putting on someone else's used earbuds is disgusting - IMO There is not enough alcohol in the world to clean them.
@@CockpitScenes there's a link to the instructions in the Reddit where someone has updated every week of the Sony response to the battery issue. You need to heat up the glue with a hairdryer and then crap open the buds like a clamshell then there's one connector you disconnect and the batter is under that connector. you need a guitar pick and a super slim wedge tool. Sounds like Sony was forced to use a less optimal battery due to the covid supply chain issues on the earlier units of the XM4. The update increased the power delivered and screwed up the batteries. Whenever you go to the dentist or doctor they're sticking things in your ears and mouth that have been in hundreds of other people. LOL. I bought my XM4 slightly ussd. I bought new tips. Put the earbuds in an UV cleaning box that kills any bacteria which is what hospitals use. I put on some surgical gloves and cleaned the buds using an irresponsible number of alcohol wipes from CVS. put them back in the UV box. unfortunately I gave the XM4 buds a nasty infection because I'm dirrtier than what comes out of the UV box.
@@porscheoscar I only got 11 months battery life out of my first XM4s. They tried to give me the runaround for warranty replacement. They tried to say it was my fault. I told them very clearly what I thought about that B.S., and they gave me a new pair. I am a little bummed out that they might now die again. I got the XM5s, and they updated to the same firmware right away. Keep my fingers crossed that they don't get fried also. BTW, love the XM5s. Also, if I need something sterilized, I will call you :)
@@CockpitScenes sounds like you got one of the earlier XM4s with the XM3 battery. I got crazy usage out my XM4 even after a run in the washing machine so I must have had the battery that was intended for the XM4. The firmware problem is only an issue with the XM4. The XM5 must surely have the proper battery from the start.
Why no reviewer says about how you are hearing with the earphones during the calls? All past Sony earphones turnon ambient mode by default during the calls and make it impossible to hear other person in a noisy area like cafe, station, public transport... Why don't you guys mention about it? Incase of TWS is CALLING that's more important as I can enjoy music at better quality with headphones.
I am curious im what way you think the ANC is better compared to the AirPods Pro 2? Because I guess it matters to what is kinda important to you. Do you mean in certain frequencies? Like for example lower and speech frequencies are cancelled out better or is the cabin pressure better with the ANC on the XM5s. Curious on your perspectives on this.
That speak to chat is so annoying. I have the WH XM5 and when I had them on, the music would stop playing so many times. Either because I’m humming or softly singing to the music, or just because of other people. Although that last one didn’t happen quite as often. But maybe it’s better on these with those improvements. By the way, 360 audio on tidal does work on iOS with a compatible Sony headphone. The subscription is just really expensive.
Great! You get to give Apple more money to bring the old AirPods up to modern standards with USB C (BTW, every device I own has been USB C for years). So, you buy the case two times - the "Apple tax".

OK, I have to ask as a layman who doesn’t know much about tech (I’m nearly 40 and outside of video games and headphones I don’t have much use for most tech) What is so special about USB-C vs lightening or whatever other type of charging cable? I’ve listened to people bitching and complaining about Apple still using lightening for the last couple years. I mean does it charge it faster? Does it help prevent battery degradation over time? Or is it simply because everyone else is using it that people think Apple should do the same?
Well, I am 73, and my home office is literally drowning in all the latest tech. There is nothing good about lightning. To begin with - only Apple uses it and it is proprietary. USB C uses an open standard and every single new piece of equipment that has a wire uses USB C. It is not just for charging; it is also a high-speed data cable. Even the iPhone 15 is going to use USB C. Apple kept lightning around so they could charge people a lot of money for the cable.
Hey friend! Good question! Focusing on USB-C, there are a number of improvements over its predecessor -- micro USB. For starters, USB-C is reversible. Both in which END of the cable you can stick into your device but as well top from bottom. Makes it really easy to connect as you don't have to worry about which end or which way is up. To clarify, the "C" part is actually referring to the connector. So it is USB Type-C. If you have a Type-C cable, you can also have USB PD, or Power Delivery. This is what allows you to charge something like a Mac with a USB-C cable at up to 100W, though USB PD can technically go up to 240W of power so there is room to grow. USB-C doubles as a video cable too, handling video output for external monitors or projectors and not requiring a separate cable. Now there are a lot of idiosyncrasies here, but those are the big reasons people like USB-C. The reason people hate on Lightning, is that as everything has moved to USB-C, iPhones were the lone holdout. Right now you can use the same USB-C cable to charge your laptop, tablet, camera, TV remote, dog collar, and everything in between. Except your iPhone. Apple is expected to move to USB-C this fall and it will be a near-universal solution.
