Here is a link to the Airspade we used. amzn.to/2DGltaY
This job started out with the aim of finding a broken water pipe, best guess was it had broken at the exit from the building. After being unable to find the pipe, we moved on to plan B, this was to dig a trench along side the building and the down the garden between the trees for laying a new water line to the guest house at the bottom of the property. The airspade was extremely useful for this specific work, as we had to remove much of the small fibrous roots, but wanted to leave as much intact as was feasible. The excavation that was done with the Airspade was necessary, and made it as easy as it could have been. Using another method for excavation would have meant much more damage to the tree roots.

Excellent tool for limiting the damage to roots! When I was taught how to airspace, an emphasis was placed on always renting a low hour compressor. Under 1000 hours the machines pass less oil downstream. I have personally seen roots become covered in oil that was intended to lubricate a different tool. Isn’t it amazing how the roots find ways to grow👍👍 Be well Dan

Dave, unfortunately anyone calling themselves a Tree expert. Fails to continue asking what else is there to know. For example here in Chicago, many of the best so-called arborist just suggested everybody let emerald ash borer kill their ash trees and replace them. Forgetting that its lumberjacks that cut down trees, and good arborist like myself protect families trees.

I know the feeling ! Hehe ! I Airspaded a tree which had a protection fence around it on a construction site to relieve soil compaction ! We then added a granular fertiliser and mulch then blew that into the soil with the Airspade !

Nice to see you wearing a full respirator, that work gets mega dusty. great tool too. i didn't know about oil getting in the air line. Using a low hour machine , or having the O rings changed would be proper though ? Jim. And. Dan is the real deal, he is very smart and runs a great channel. We need more people like him making videos..Jim

Another way to stay busy in the off season … Maybe throw a Tyvek suit in your air spade kit next time haha . Good for having on jobs with poison ivy and all that other fun "tree guy problem" stuff too.

Did you rent this gear? Also, no surprise that so much root activity was near the downspout, that’s to be expected. I would have recommended they remove the Portuguese Cherry Laurel. They are shade tolerant invasive ornamentals in the PNW. Thanks for posting.

you need to add vacuum excavator to help suck up spoils with remote hose.

Is there no access to the basement/ crawlspace to locate where the pipe exits the home?
@evanhooten4459
@evanhooten4459 5 лет назад
In many areas you can call the water or power company and they will come out and locate any power or water lines with ground penetrating radar in a given location for a reasonable fee
@ClimbingArborist

Evan Hooten the house is on 4 levels, but where we were standing is lower than the bottom level (due to the gradient) so the bottom of the house is just backfill, so no access to where the pipe would exit. The pipe needed repairing, and it was clear where the issue was so running a new pipe quickly became the better option

What size of waterline we're you searching for? With water on and a broken line, one would expect to find a soggy mess.
@ClimbingArborist
@ClimbingArborist 5 лет назад
The water had been shut off for about 2-3 months at this point, although we were still expecting to find damp soil, but obviously didn't get close enough to the water line to discover it.

I have a job coming up to use an airspade to try and restore a old black oak. It has hypoxylon canker

So, are you going to treat with fungicide? Prune infected roots? I am curious. Thank you.

i appreciate your care for those trees, but western red cedar and western hemlock in that small of a space, including such a shallow rooting area? your thoughts?

The trees were very important to the owners view from their deck which is not shown in the video. The top of these trees are trimmed every year to maintain the size and screen from buildings below. One mans junk is another mans treasure as they say...

@@ClimbingArborist Oh I see..well yeah if they're trimmed every year I guess. Roots destroying foundation would be a concern though. Wasn't expecting a reply from you...but thanks for doing so. Keep up the good work 👍

What is frost line there? We would have to dig down 6 feet here, crappy.
@ClimbingArborist

Thim not sure, I don’t know much about building code, I was there to minimize the damage to the trees. It’s very rare for it to ever snow here, which is funny considering the snow in the video

What you needed to find the pipe was a set of divining rods. That would have indicated it's route for sure.
