Sad story...of course this film and countless others were made as morale boosters for those in uniform and propaganda for those (read Congress) who were civilians. Many dedicated and brave American aviators were ''sacrificed' on the altar called "Rolling Thunder" (in those days). Massive losses of expensive aircraft and irreplaceable aircrews to try to achieve no strategic and very limited tactical objectives (post-strike recce often as not showed roads, truck parks, bridges, depots, rail junctions, etc repaired and back in service within the day. An old tale...A young NVA soldier straps 3 large mortar rounds to the frame of his bicycle and pushed it hundreds of miles down the Ho Chi Minh Trail to a point in South Vietnam. Along the way, he battled choking dust, deep mud, rugged terrain, biting insects, and the ever-present threat of aerial ambush. Upon arriving at his destination, he looked on in satisfaction as the three mortar rounds were fired at the Imperialist running dogs. The military commander patted the the young soldier on the back, then told him, "Thank, you comrade. Now go back and bring three more shells." How could we have achieved victory against determination like that, based on the rules of engagement in play?

You should see documentaries with ex-VietCong about this stuff, apparently some guerrillas were so scared that they deserted back to Hanoi for a few days before rejoining the fight on the frontlines. @RootzRockBand

The weapons manufacturers and oil tycoons made a killing on weapons and fuel sales while the US tax payers paid and still are paying for this war. Meanwhile the politicians and bankers also profited by printing and loaning money creating debt and interest to pay for the weapons. The more bombs dropped the more money they made, even if the bombs did not even hit any target and hit “trees”, it kept the demand for more weapons ongoing. Most tax payers then and now have no clue how this war buisness is operated and how they the tax payer is responsible to pay for the all of the costs of all military campaigns.

Cool film pointing out the futility of this type of bombing campaign. You blow a hole in an unpaved road one day, and the hole gets filled back in within hours. Notice how many "truck parks" and "storage areas" are bombed. More often than not, there was nothing there. The pilots just dumped their bombs and called it a day. The only way to interdict the Trail would have been to invade and occupy. This is the main source of our defeat there, as we were not willing to do that. If we weren't willing to do what it took to win, we should never have fought.

Why all the F-105 commentary when many of the aircraft are A-7's?
@FN_FAL_4_ever
@FN_FAL_4_ever 4 года назад
Because for starters, these gun camera films were shot in 1966. The first A-7D built for the Air Force did not make its first flight until 1968, entered squadron service in 1970, and were first deployed to Vietnam in 1972 just prior to Linebacker II. Navy A-7As didn’t enter the Vietnam War until December 1967. During this time, F-105s were flying roughly 75% of all missions in N. Vietnam and Laos during this time. By the time of the 1968 bombing halt, nearly half of the F-105 fleet was lost and F-4s took their place.
